So we are supposed to leave for a big family trip to WDW this Sunday. Just a few minutes ago I got a call from my mom and my brother in law found out today that he has a blood clot in his leg. They don't know anything right now or know how serious it is. He is on bed rest for now and tomorrow will go see a specialist. I am so scared. he has been in my life since I was 6 and I am now 28. He has been my protector and I hate this and am scared. I have no idea what to expect .

We may move our trip back until March or another time we don't know. I really don't care about the trip I just care about my brother in law. His kids don't know what is going on just that daddy needs to rest. Their ages are 12, 9, and 3. I am not sure why I am getting this out here. I think I need to vent and this is the only place I can come where someone I know in real life wont find out. They really don't want the kids to know right now. Has anyone ever dealt with blood clots before?

I've never dealt with blood clots before, but I wanted to give you my support and just offer some advice if you will.
Go on your trip unless something else MAJOR happens. I mean your BIL is on bedrest so not much you can do for him hanging around worrying right? :hug:Think of your little ones and how it would feel this close to the trip to cancel. Maybe, just maybe you'll need this trip with what's coming up as you may not get to go again as soon as you'd like. You can always call and check on BIL while in Disney and if anything happens, just head home. Yes?
I would still go and hope no one faults for me for this. Unless it was a heart attack or something else in that line, I wouldn't go. Make sense?
Best to all of you and if you go, enjoy your trip.

Vent away! That's what most of us are here for-- to lend an ear.

I work at a place that does the Doppler exams used to diagnose DVT (blood clots). It is important that they found it. It is a serious condition but take some comfort that he is being treated.

Best of luck to your BIL and for your kids try to enjoy your trip.

The trip part isn't really up to us. My parents are paying for the trip and bil, sister and her kids are apart of it. My parents stance is if everyone can't go then we go at a different time. We were planning on going to mil's house after visiting the world so we may leave earlier to help with the kids being upset. I'm worried about bil I have no clue how serious this is

Ah, I see. Well then, just be with BIL.

{{{hugs}}} and prayers for your BIL and family.

My family (myself included) has a heavy history of DVTs/PEs; they are scary and dangerous, no doubt about it. One "good" thing, though, is that finding them in time is the key (and it sounds like they did) - once found, they are highly treatable! Odds are they have him on bed-rest to give medication time to stabilize it so that his body can reabsorb it (at least, that's what they did with me).

I'm sorry to hear about your BIL. I have only known one person who had a blood clot. Her clot was also in her leg. She was hospitalized briefly and treated. I'm not sure what treatment she got, but she ended up being fine and never had a problem with it again. That was over 15 years ago. Her blood clot was caused by the use of some type of birth control pills that she took to treat a medical problem.

I hope you BIL gets better soon.

my mother had a really bad blood clot in her left leg about 12 1/2 years ago. it completely reabsorbed-to the point that there's no trace of it to be found on any imaging test. thankfully, your BIL's clot was found in time, just like my mom's. i pray he will make a quick, full recovery. :)

I am glad, and I am sure you are too, that it is just something bad and not something horrible. The clot was found, and it is treatable. Your attitude is actually quite admirable about the trip. Prayers being said for your BIL.

Thank you for the sweet compliment! It is a little sad that we may have to wait but my brother in law is sooo much more important. I honestly don't know how I would feel if something happened to me. He has been almost like a father to me.

100% agree. My DH has had this problem for years (and he's only 31 now). Another good sign is they put him on bed rest and didn't hospitalize him right away. Dh was hospitalized numerous times for treatment. They finally installed a filter to keep any leg clots from moving up. He's also on blood thinners. In his case probably for the rest of his life. There is very little he can't do in life now though. What he can't do more involves being on blood thinners and not the DVT issue. He feels great an he hasn't had a problem in a long time. I can't tell you not to worry but as the PP said it is very treatable. Sending lots of very understanding thoughts and hugs your way.

Thank you! I am so glad I posted this. You guys have eased my mind some. Thank you

I'm glad you feel a little better. :goodvibes Any more questions please ask here or feel free to PM me. I have lots of experience in how DVT is dealt with.

Oooh that is scary stuff!

When will you know if you're going or not?

Better know now and not later on when you maybe weren't so lucky.

Just went through this in October. Diagnosed with a blood clot in the ER and had a trip to WDW planned 10 days later.

Doc said NO problem flying and just had to inject Fragmin twice a day. Had a terrific trip.

Hope you can go too!

First my heart goes out to your BIL and his family. I pray that he gets better.

I feel however if he finds that he is the reason that the trip was cancelled that is going to break his heart, He will feel like he let you all down.

My brother in law was admitted to the hospital this morning and will be there for at least 2 to 3 days. We still don't know what this means for our trip he isn't ready to cancel yet. I am still not getting many details from my mom about his condition but I plan on visiting him this afternoon

They probably admitted him so they could put him on Heparin (used to treat and prevent blood clots in the veins) and monitor his blood levels by taking blood tests often. If this is the case they have to keep him for 2 or 3 days to make sure his blood isn't too thin after treatment.
