Love landing at MCO at 7:55 but there's a price to pay. PHL is our regular port of departure but never this early. Is 2 hrs prior to take off still the rule? We're doing the sleep n fly out of Sheraton Four Points, they've got great shuttle service but we'd have to be at the bus stop at 3 am to safely be at the terminal at 3:30. Thoughts?

TSA will just be getting going for those first out flights around 5/5:30 am. When I’ve flown that early for business trips I usually get to PHL around 4/4:15 for a 5:30 flight. Nothing really opens past security until probably right before your flight and I’ve never had an issue getting through security quickly at that time of day so I’m comfortable with doing it that way but if you’d feel better just getting to the gate your timeline will work fine.

Thanks for the replies, I'll probably just follow the 2 hr rule. I'm paranoid about missing a flight even though I've never come close to that. Getting to the airport, schlepping the luggage then going through TSA is the only stressful part of vacation. Once we're at the gate the vacation has officially begun. We're taking the day before off for a relaxed drive to Philly and we plan on getting to bed early so we'll get by.

We are the same way about the 2 hours. We just prefer to not take any chances. We've had some odd experiences our last few trips.

Three years ago we had a magical express bus leave about 2 hours before our flight. I didn't think we would make it, but never thought to go ask for an earlier bus. At that time we flew in AirTran, but flew out Southwest (SW bought AT not long before that), and couldn't do resort check in because there was in issue with the merger and not registering in the system or something. We made a couple stops on the way. When we got there the line to check in upstairs for SW was ridiculous. We knew we wouldn't make it. We got in line and an employee made an announcement to go downstairs, there was a smaller line. We ran and luckily beat the mad dash behind us. We got through security, hit the restroom, then boarded our flight. That was way too close a call for us!

Then, last year, when leaving MCO, we had a magical express bus 3.5/4 hours before our flight. I was a little annoyed that it was so early but we took it anyway since our previous experience. Luckily we did. The lines at MCO were huge, then we got up and the boarding passes 2 of us got from resort check in wouldn't scan (the TSA guy asked if we came from WDW and said it happens quite often). We had to get out of line, go print boarding passes, then get back in line. By the time we got through, we got a couple sandwiches at McDonalds for breakfast (the others with us had a nice sit down breakfast and were done when we got through), scarfed them down, hit the restroom, then boarded our flight about 5 minutes later. After that experience, I won't take chances, especially at MCO!

Gotta say, both flights were to/from Richmond, and the Richmond portion was smooth. Got through security in no time and waited about 1.5 hours both times for our flights after through security.

On the other side, we left 3.5 hours before our recent flight out of Pittsburgh to Colorado (although it was a later morning flight). We only live about a half hour away, but were going to a park and fly, and didn't want to chance any issues. Whether it be traffic, a shuttle to the airport, or security lines. Of course everything went smooth as could be, and we were there and through security in less than an hour. We just got some breakfast, relaxed, walked around the shops, hit the restroom, then got in line for the flight. It wasn't bad though, much more relaxing than our last two departing MCO experiences.

Just goes to show that anything could happen. Better to be safe!

TSA Precheck is great if you fly a couple of times a year. No more long lines at MCO for us!

We fly out of Philadelphia all the time. I’d say if you arrive to the airport by 4 you’ll be fine. Security won’t open any earlier than that anyway.

I live about 10 minutes from the GRR airport. I have a flight next Saturday that departs at 5pm. I am not checking any bags so I can head straight for the gate. They just re-did the TSA checkpoints (consolidating 2 checkpoints into 1) and reported that the time to get through security did not change substantially. The report was that the longest wait time before and after the merger has not been more than 20 minutes. Based on that information, I am planning to leave my house by 3:30. That's an hour before our flight starts to board so I should have plenty of time...

...That is the plan...but, like every trip I take, I just can't wait so I still end up at the airport about 2 hours before my flight. This time, though, the absolute soonest I will be able to leave my house is 3pm.

Once we're at the gate the vacation has officially begun.

Based on my own experience, you aren't likely to get to the gate that early. You'll end up standing in line (maybe starting the line) at TSA until they open. If you are arriving at MCO at 3:30am, it could be about an hour to stand and wait. There is virtually nothing open in MCO at that hour; you might find a newstand somewhere but that's about it, and even most of those aren't open yet. I'd sleep in another 30-45 minutes, plan to arrive at MCO 4-4:30am. It'll still be plenty of time to get through TSA and to your gate.

Enjoy your vacation!

Thanks, that will buy us a half hour or more of uneasy sleep. Seriously, I wish they could just fax us down to Orlando. I'm not afraid to fly, I dread the whole getting to the airport, through TSA on time thing. Our vacation begins in a chair at the gate.

We just had a horrible dealing with MCO security lines, and we have TSA pre check appointments tomorrow. Don't want to deal with that again.

For an early PHL flight i would get there by 330/4am. Good luck!

As it happens I’m now on a 5:30 flight to Orlando in 2 weeks for work so I can comment on this even more confidently. My car service isn’t even picking me up until 3:45am I live about 30 minutes from the airport. Ill only have a carry on so I don’t have anything to check and I’m comfortable with this timeline, but it’s not for everyone. That said I never cut it this close departing from MCO - those lines are truly some of the worst.

Just be prepared that the PHL checkpoints are on staggered opening times depending on first flights out and you may be waiting longer while they open additional lanes (as often happens in terminal E where southwest gates are -not sure what airline you’re on). You also will find that many of the restaurants and vendors will not open until closer to 7 so don’t go hungry ;)

Do whatever makes you feel comfortable. It’s your vacation, after all :)

About three years ago , we started using curbside check in for our bags. We had an early early flight and got there 2 hrs ahead and then waited about 30 min just for SW to open up the ticket counter. And we weren't even the first ones. Maybe 25 people ahead of us and 3 or 4 agents checking in people. Move suitcases 6 inches, wait, move suitcases 6 inches , wait.......that was the last year of that nonsense. Curbside checking....best use of $5.

Thanks, that schedule sounds more appealing. Not too concerned about breakfast, we bring a couple of large hoagies from home, some gets eaten the evening before the rest at the gate.
