Nevermind my question about whether I read it right. After reading the title and then reading the first post of this thread- I see I read it right.
I'm tempted to just let the onboard credit go and get our deposit back (well, it's no small potatoes for a family of 5 for 2wks cruise!) because I'm not sure I want to tie up that money for this long. It was already going to be 2yrs since our last cruise- and who knows.. in 2009 they might think up some other special itinerary!
I'm upset with them and I am tempted to write or call to complain. I am okay with them doing special itineraries every other year- this keeps those that want a change happy. But to do special itineraries EVERY summer is ridiculous. That is the one time of year the MOST people (especially with kids!) can go, and they keep doing special itineraries out of other areas with ports we're not interested in (or in the case of 2007 can't afford) and no stops at
Castaway Cay, etc? Every other year is fine, EVERY summer is not cool- in my book.
Oh and I just thought of something else... the kids ages. If we would have went on the back to back cruises in 2008- our youngest would be 7 the first week, 8 the 2nd week. Our middle child would be 10, and our oldest would be 14.
Because of what THEY would have available for them to do (especially the oldest) we had decided on the back to back because we weren't SURE if we'd do another cruise for several years because we really don't anticipate our oldest being "mature" enough to want to just hang out with teenagers up to the age of 18 and do the things they do/etc. That's the last age she wouldn't have had ONLY hanging out with teenagers up to age 18 to do while on the cruise.
Now even if we decide to wait and see what 2009 is doing- youngest will be 9, middle 11 (so they won't be together in the clubs ever) and oldest will be 15- and like I said... most likely not mature enough to be interested in what is available for that age group nor would we even want her to hang out with kids up to age 18 when she would have just turned 15.
It really looks like we have no choice- we probably won't be doing Disney cruises for a long time. We don't really want to take the kids out of school because they are getting older (oldest will be in highschool by then and middle child in middle school- what we used to call jr high btw) and because a cruise is so much time. Texas is pretty strict. We can get away with taking a few days out of school if the teachers agree and the kids can do the work ahead of time or make it up afterwards- but that is going to be harder as they get older and a cruise is more than just a few days off from school. So the summer is all we have- and Disney cruiseline has decided to mess that up for us.
I'll have to talk to DH but we'll probably just be nixing any Disney cruises for quite some time- because even when the oldest is old enough and mature enough to go and still have fun- then our middle child will be at the same age having the same issue... 14/15 and I'm NOT keen on that age just hanging out with kids up to the age of 18yrs old (most of the time just "hanging out" anyway- and I witnessed one of the activites for that age group on the last cruise- the dancing to moonlight- NOT something I want my kids involved in at that age! Definitely not something I'd want them involved in until they were atleast 17, if ever. LOL) Then after him- same thing with the youngest since she's 2yrs younger. Quite frankly we probably would have made the 2008 back to back cruises our last ones for a long long while. And now that's blown. ugh! I don't know what we'll do. I guess we're back to just visiting WDW. Is that what Disney wanted?
We'll have to do some thinking about this. I may just stick with what we have booked now- we booked the Dec 15th 7 day cruise because it was the last available at the time (besides Christmas week I think- which now I wish we'd grabbed that instead if it was available, I can't remember now) because it will probably be our last cruise for awhile and I'm not ready to just "not cruise" again for such a long time. I'm not interested in paying for the 2 staterooms (one verandah, one inside stateroom across the hall) for the Christmas week now to make it back to back because that would add almost DOUBLE the first week (about 11,500 more for the 2nd week added on). I'm not even sure I'd like to be on the cruise over Christmas anyway. The only time we haven't been home for christmas is when our oldest two were much younger (youngest not even born yet) and even then it was a mess. We went to visit family in Michigan during that time and it just wasn't the same not being home, opening their presents under their tree, etc. on Christmas morning and coming home to it a week after Christmas- yanno?
But, if we do decide we'd like to be on a
Disney cruise over Christmas- maybe we'll do the one week we already have booked Dec 15th, 2007 and then do a 4 day cruise after that- something different and a lot less expensive. I just don't know. The kids ages would be fine (for me) at that point. They would be 7, barely turned 10 and still 13 because the oldest wouldn't turn 14 until Jan 2008. Those ages would be fine with me. Such a mess. I really had no idea they'd do special itineraries TWO summers in a row. I would have bet money (and in fact kinda did gamble on that) that they wouldn't. *sigh*
Oh and yeah, we have to consider the weather in Dec also. We're Texans... we're not used to cold weather so if it's even slightly cold that will ruin any plans for us to do anything water related or even outdoor related- and ofcourse have to pack more clothing, jackets, etc.
