Many employers provide 401K matching funds - usually for the first 3% of an employees contribution.

I've seen some companies match 50 cents on the dollar, and some match dollar for dollar.

I realize how fortunate I was because my company matched 4 to one.

They give 5% unmatched, then will match an additional 5%.

I get 5% right off the top and for every percent that I contribute up to 5% they match. I put in 5% and the company gives me 10%.

Autumn

My company matches HALF up to 6% so the most from the Employer's end is 3%.

In other words...if I contribute 1%, the company match is .50%.

If I put in 6%, the company match is 3%.

If I put in from 7%-20% (max), the company match is 3%.

Either way...it's free money.

DH also has a retirement account from employeer. They directly contribute 6% of salary annually to an account in his name(an only be accessed at retirement), which also gets a gaurenteed(yes!) 4% interest. No matching on these accounts, but DH also has a 403B which is not matched.

I get 5% of my total gross income (including bonuses) and am fully vested in 3 years.

We don't have a 401K, we have a Simple IRA and they match up to 3%. That's the legal limit of what they can match. Don't know about 401K's.

This year the match was 94 cents per $1 up to 5%. A few years ago they matched $1.34 per $1 up to 5%. It just depends on how business is. I'll take FREE money any day!

My current company matches the first 6%.

The previous company did not match at all.

The company before that matched 2 to 1 on the first 4%. The thinking of the scheme was to allow those who could only afford to contribute a small percentage the ability to build up savings more quickly.

I work for a small family owned company. My bosses contribute to a retirement fund for all the workers. Whatever percentage they put in for 1 they must do for all (even themselves). So, have been very lucky as they have put the max (15%) into an account each year for retirment. We then have control over the funds and what type of accounts we want them in.

My husbands company will match his 50 cents to every dollar he contributes with no maximum percentage.

Before I retired from the Federal Government I was in the equivilant of a 401(k), which was the Thrift Savings Plan. They matched as follows:

Me Them
0 1%
1% 2%
2% 3%
3% 4%
4% 4.5%
5% 5%
6% or more their cap was 5%

I work in healthcare...need I say anything more.

I have never had any type of a match until my current company. It was always 403b, now I am in 401k. They will match 25% of the first 6% of your salary that you put in. If you put in over 6%, they don't match the amount over. This of course is after 1 year working for them. They, also, at the end of the year will put a certain amount back in if they meet certain financial goals. Last year, they put another 2.5 mill into the 401K (before I was an investor)..hopefully they will do it again this year!! I work for a nationwide healthcare co.
