I agree with this sentiment wholeheartedly. I've never worked in a job that made me rely on tips, and frankly, I don't think I ever could. I'm pretty good natured, have a strong sense of humor, am very easy going, but the moment someone comes across with an attitude or sense of entitlement, my mouth opens and they hear it. I'd get fired on my first day.

That said, the reality is that folks in the service industry are victims of abuse moreso that most other people. YOU KNOW THAT AS WELL AS I DO. The stories friends have told me are downright shocking and disgusting.

Yeah, they know they can get a better job. Yeah, they do NOT have to do it by choice. Yeah, they have college degrees.

But c'mon folks. TIPS ARE TIPS. I hate to say it but get off your high horse and recognize that these people are HUMANS and not someone you can or should get snotty or high-and-mighty with. You are NOT NOT NOT better than they are. They work hard for their money JUST LIKE YOU.

You don't want to tip for adequate to good service because someone deigns to ask "Do you need change?" Perish the thought.

Get over it. You don't like it? Stay at home and make your own pizza.

Now let me also say that I will NOT tip for poor service. I WILL talk to the individual in question and their manager if their service is bad and/or they have an attitude problem.

I won't apologize for being harsh. But you guys are being harsh to folks in the service industry.

Hairdresser do depend on tips. A tip is a payment for services rendered. Good or normal service requires a normal tip. If you're consistently tipping below the norm you're either expecting people to serve you for free or you're doing a bad job picking business to patronize.

Kathy's post isn't a matter of opinion, it's really a matter of fact. If you refuse to tip a "tipped" worker, for good service, you're expecting that person to work for free. YOUR OPINION OF HOW THE COMPENSATION SHOULD BE PAID (by salary instead of by tips) is irrelevant.

A few states and other countries have different rules. Come on, does anyone not know the pizza delivery person earns his living off tips?
 
I cannot stand it when a waitperson asks if I need change and unfortunately it is becoming more commonplace. I am a good tipper and usually tip 20% or more but for them to assume they are owed my change just grates on my nerves.

Here's another one that bothers me - say the bill comes to $7.41, you give them $8.00. They bring you back .55 . Why not bring back the exact change? I know it's just a few pennies but if they pocket a few from every customer that adds up over the course of a few days.

I think people also should consider that when a business offers a deal on food or services, you should really base your tip on the full regular price, not the discounted price. The employee should not have to suffer the loss because their company is offering a special.
 
When I worked as a delivery driver in college, I got mileage reimbursement on top of my hourly wage, precisely to help defray costs of gas, wear & tear, etc.

I usually give the pizza delivery guy $2 plus whatever change it takes to round up to the next dollar. I just don't consider bringing a pizza to my door to be of the same level of service as a waitperson in a restaurant.

I've been pressured for a tip by the servers at my local Sonic - even if you use the drive through, they leave write in a "tip" line on my debit card receipt. Unbelievable. That's like tipping the cashier at McDonald's.

Depending on the area, the servers at Sonic work for less than minimum wage and depend on tips ;) They put together all the food, fill the shakes, ect. so they pretty much deserve it :)

Well in that case, we should all start tipping the folks at McDonald's, Wendy's, Taco Bell, Burger King, and any other fast-food place. I worked in a movie theater in high school. I never dreamed of being tipped for serving popcorn and cokes.

I was so surprised to be asked for a tip at Sonic, that I emailed their corporate headquarters to ask if this was a standard practice. When I hear back from them, I'll let you know.

Wrong. Those people have a set wage above minimum($6, $5.50, whatever). The people at Sonic work for $2-$4 depending on the area.

I have to disagree - I don't think it's being harsh to people in the service industry to expect them to EARN their tip. You yourself said that you willnot itp for bad service - what constitutes bad service? IMO, a delivery person asking, not only "Do you want change" but also then "How much?" is rude, plain and simple. Rude service is poor service. As I said, I am usually a generous tipper - I'd generally rather over-tip than under-tip. However, if a delivery person, waitperson, hairdresser, whomever, is rude, that is brings down the level of service that I received and will result in me leaving less of a tip. I realize that they get treated rudely by many people, but that does not mean that they can treat others rudely and still expect a good tip. Yes, they depend upon tips as a part of their pay - their pay that they are getting not simply for delivering a pizza or serving food, but for doing so in a courteous manner. If they are not treating customers well, IMO they are not fully performing their job, and should not expect to be fully paid (in the form of tips).

Well, I guess we'll agree to disagree! I just do not think asking "would you like change" as being rude. Especially in this day and age when it's the norm.

You have to admit that when you're out, more often than not, you will be asked that question. So, is everyone that asks it being rude? Not at all in my opinion. I've had some of the greatest, friendliest, most outgoing, efficient, chipper servers ask me that very same thing. Am I going to immediately go on the defensive and think, "Oh my... how RUDE!" and then deny that individual their tip or at least a tip that reflects the level of service they provided? Heck no.

I guess what made a difference to me in the OP's example was that, not only did the delivery person ask if she wanted change, but after she said yes, asked her how much? If I say yes, I need change, just bring me my change and let me leave the tip.

I think you are absolutely right about the tone of voice making a big difference - my reading of the original post, especially with the kid asking "how much" I was "hearing" a surly tone of voice in my head, which would certainly influence my reaction. If I had an otherwise great waiter/waitress, I would not stiff them on the tip because they asked if I wanted change.
 
When in a restaurant I don't mind being asked if I "want change", at all. I frequent a Longhorn Steakhouse several times a week, and usually we sit in the bar area. The bartender serving that area has probably 10 - 12 tables. When I give her the check back with cash she always asks if I need change. When I DO need change she runs right back and tenders me out and returns with my change ASAP. If I DON'T need change, then she can continue waiting on the other tables without delay. I don't see it as rude, or mongering for bigger tips, it's simply a way to serve EVERYONE she is waiting on efficiently.
 
I have to teloyu...I hate when a waiter or delivery person even asks the question "do you need change?" when I pay them.

If I give you more money than the bill came to, say "I'll bring you your change". If I don't need the change back, I'll tell you.

I thought hairdresser make more than minimum wage. How much of that $50 perm cost goes to her? If she only gets half and it takes 2 hours, than she made $12.50 an hour. I just don't know why that requires a tip. My hairdresser owns the shop, so I don't always tip her. But her daughter works for her and does nails and pedicures and I always tip her. To be quite truthful I was probably in my forties before I realized that I was suppose to tip the hairdresser. I thought that I was being charged for the service based on the cost and them making a profit and that a tip wasn't required. I will have to ask my husband if he tips the barber.
 
When I pay with cash the waiter frequently asks if I need change, before even looking at how much money I left. If I don't need change they can pick up the check and don't have to come back until I leave. Makes sense if a restaurant is busy.

I'll usually tell a delivery person how much change I want. I'll decide how much of a tip I want and then round the change down to the nearest dollar increasing the tip. I don't want to waste the time counting out coins when I'm going to give it right back.

Now I understand the complaint if the deliver person or waiter says it in a rude way.

I work for Sonic and the carhops don't make minimum wage. Depending on the area, they make between 2 and 4 dollars per hour plus whatever tips they can bring in. So denying a carhop a tip (unless they give you really really bad service) is the wrong thing to do,IMHO.

Here's my take:

I'd much rather have a server say "I'll be right back with your change" than ask if I want change. It doesn't require looking to see how much has been left right at that moment, and it doesn't imply that I should be leaving all of the change for the server. If I'm asked if I want change, my response is "I do now."

I'm waiting for the day the cashier at the grocery store asks me if I want my change. Or do you think I'll see a tip jar there first?
 
I'm a waitress and I NEVER ask if someone wants their change. I ALWAYS say to them the cost of the meal, then say the amount of money they hand me, like if the meal was $40 and they hand me a $50 I say "$40 out of $50" and I say "I will be right back with your change." It's up to THEM if they want to say "keep the change" or whatever, it's not up to me.

And I HATE being asked "do you want change" from the server when we go out. YES I want my change, and I will decide what to tip you AFTER I get it!
I further hate going up to the register to pay and having the host/hostess ask me "do you need change for a tip?" If I need change for a tip I'll tell you. I wouldn't deduct anything from the server's tip for that question though, it's not their fault the host/hostess asked. But I think the server/host/hostess should just give customers back their change, without asking if they want or need it, and let the customer decide what to tip afterward.

Yes, I do tip teachers, at least preschool and elem school. Every year I buy a gift certificate to Borders--$20-25 per teacher. That's on top of the salary they get. And the boxes of tissue and hand soap I send in, etc.

40% though? Uh, no way? Very often we go and pick up, but otherwise we tip around 20% on delivery. Nothing if we pick up the pizza.
