We've just returned from our WONDER-ful trip to Nassau and Castaway Cay. It was my third Disney cruise, and as usual, I still feel like we're at sea, rocking back and forth...

It was a spectacular vacation. Not much has changed in the five years since my last Wonder cruise. The highlights:

"Toy Story: The Musical." What an impressive piece of work this is, with Randy Newman's signature "You've Got a Friend in Me" opening the show, followed by a terrific suite of songs, including the impressive march "To Infinity and Beyond." There were whispers that an expanded version of this hour-long staging will open on Broadway sometime in the future, and it's good enough to succeed. The costumes alone were worth sailing to see. "The Golden Mickeys" and "Disney Dreams" opened and closed the trip, respectively, with a 3-D showing of the animated "Bolt" in the Disney Theater on night #3.

Castaway Club Meet & Greet. The ship's captain, Gus, was on hand to answer questions, as were other officers and crew members. Really had fun interacting with other guests and the crew! From what I could ascertain, the two new ships will be roughly 50 percent bigger (mostly in the width, although there were be 15 decks), and will ultimately replace the Wonder & Magic in their current American itineraries. Magic will supposedly take up permanent residence in Europe, and the Wonder will come around to the West Coast of the USA, with a possible Alaskan route on the drawing board.

Live music was provided by Kenné (who sang tributes to Billy Joel, Elton John, Nat King Cole, Barry Manilow, etc.) and AJ Robb, a pianist who did not sing but tickled the ivories with panache.

Some guests who had booked their cruises early were astonished to receive a $99-per-guest offer for a future cruise on the Wonder this fall.

Our Nassau shore excursion to the Atlantis hotel and water park was phenomenal. I recommend it very highly, and don't miss the incredible aquariums. Unfortunately, rough water and high winds led to the cancellation of our Castaway Cay snorkeling adventure, but those who stayed on the beach still got plenty of sunshine and great weather.

This was my first trip as a pin trader, and those who cruised got a special offer to snare a free different pin on three of the nights -- each one showing a separate part of the ship (fore, midship and aft). One of the great thrills of our last night was trading pins with the ship's officers, who wore their official white suits but with the addition of lanyards covered in cool pins!

Lisa did an awesome job with the Art of the Theme walking tour of the ship; she looks just like Marcia Brady and confided that she's been told that a million times. Luke and Christopher really stood out as hosts of various other events.

I didn't get involved in the Pirate celebration, as I tended to busy myself with other events. The trip's only real negative was my inability to connect with others I'd connected with on this board. One member with the alias Alice on the Wonder-land had turned 30 on the ship, so I had purchased a couple of nice gifts for her, which I dutifully had brought to one of our predetermined meeting spots. Unfortunately, she (along with anybody else from the DISboards) failed to show up at 10:30 in WaveBands on Wednesday evening.

I did book my next cruise on board -- a seven-night Western Caribbean trip commencing in one year's time.

Thanks to the entire crew for doing their usual great job making everybody feel welcome and appreciated!

Thanks for the great review.

A few quick questions:

-Any activities that we should make sure to check out?
-Were there any activities by the pool and/or music (whether it be the main pool or the adults pool)?
-Would you suggest going to all of the shows?
-Was the sun out every day, and was the weather hot every day?

Thanks!

Sounds like it was a lovely cruise, thanks for the trip report.
Thank you for the info one the new ships, I'm looking forward to them. Wider ships would be nice, the current ones are narrow and crowded. Deck 9 is more like an obstacle course.
Good to know there is still some live entertainment left on the Wonder.

I saved all my Navigators (the daily newsletter detailing all of the scheduled events), and could scan them if you're interested. There are so many things going on that even my travel companion and I barely spent any time together because we had different interests. So what I like probably won't be what you like to do. Examples: I am not a pool guy, so I didn't hang around the pools. Also, I really like watching the musicians on board, so I tended to follow around pianist AJ Robb like some kind of stalker. You could find me every single late night at the Cadillac Lounge or the Promenade watching the musicians. One night, I think it was the third night, Robb played piano in the Cadillac Lounge while various cast members from the musicals sang their favorite show-tune songs. This was probably my favorite event on the cruise—I can't think why I failed to mention it in my original report.

Having said that, I really enjoyed the early Bingo game in WaveBands, and if you participate, I recommend that you invest in one of their electronic games that plays lots of games and does all the work for you. The towel-folding class is always fun, although this year's meet was remarkably crowded. You must not, repeat MUST NOT, miss the "Art of the Theme" ship tour that takes place on the final full day at sea (if you're on the four-night). It is so fun and informative, I attend every single time I cruise.

This was also the first year I got a massage on board, and I enjoyed mine so much (by Gayle) that I got two in one day!

One of my dining mates revealed to me that her party took a miss on all of the musical shows on the main stage, which was like blasphemy to this traveler, who shamelessly picked this particular cruise specifically to see Toy Story: The Musical. I do not suggest going to all of the shows—I DEMAND that you see them ALL! :) The only bad thing about them is the crinkling of cellophane from the other audience members. I never had any interest in seeing "Bolt" when it came out in the theaters, but I saw it on the ship and it was very good!

As for the weather, the sun was out every day, although the beginning of the Nassau day was very cloudy. It cleared up by early afternoon and was sunny the rest of the day. Like I said before, Castaway Cay day was windy and chilly out on the water during the morning (canceling some of the snorkeling and parasailing excursions), but that too cleared up and it was a perfect beach day in the afternoon. It was warm, never too hot.

Hope you enjoy your cruise! Let me know if you have any other questions.

I really enjoy people watching, so as I would dodge the crowd, I never found myself annoyed. On retrospect, though, you're probably right about the obstacle course. More so than on my previous cruises, Deck 9 was much more crowded than usual, and the Pirate celebration was so congested I came up for five minutes and then went straight back belowdecks.

Bretty Spaghetti,

You are a dear! Thank you for thinking of me on my birthday. I appoligize for my absence at our Mardi Gras meet. I was severely sunburnt after our day on Castaway Cay (this came after applying MANY coats of sunscreen!) and my 4 year old was plumb tuckered out. I did talk to one of our DIS meet friends, Sue - can't remember her user name - who did go to Wavebands but was unable to find anyone else from our group.

I appologize for not organizing our meets in better terms. This was my first cruise and I didn't know what to expect. Please accept my appology for missing you! I would have truly loved to meet you in person and connect with you on a human rather than computer basis! Your intentions are greatly appreciated.

Glad you had a nice trip other than this little planning hiccup. :)

If you'd like to download a PDF file with all of the Navigators from the Feb. 22, 2009 Wonder cruise to the Bahamas, you may do so here:

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=OHRISHQU

At the end of the file is a list of all the movies playing at the Buena Vista Theater.

Enjoy!

I'd love to download this copy, but I'm having a little trouble with megaupload...

Do I have to be a member to get the file? I keep typing in the security code (jumbled letters) and it just goes back to a new welcome screen with new letters...

(maybe if I do it in Explorer - v/s Firefox)

ETA: I changed to MS -- and then also realized that it had a 'wait 45 seconds' - so waited for that, and it looks like we're in good shape....

so "never mind" lol

Brett can you help me? I want to see it as well as print it out.

Here's how it works.

Go to http://www.megaupload.com/?d=OHRISHQU

This will take you to a Megaupload page. At the top right-hand corner, you'll see "Enter this" followed by some crooked letters and numbers (called a "captcha" image). Type the code (i.e., FTP9) into the field at the right and hit ENTER. Then you'll see a link that says:

Download link: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=OHRISHQU

You'll need to wait about 45 seconds to download. If you scan down the right side of the page, you'll see the countdown....Please wait 42, 41, 40, 39, etc. seconds. Eventually you'll see two buttons: Premium download and Regular download. Click on Regular download.

Hope this helps!

Brett

Have a wonderful cruise! I cannot recommend PALO highly enough. It's the ship's upscale restaurant, no kids allowed. If you haven't made arrangements yet, as soon as you get on the ship -- and I'd suggest an early boarding -- go directly to WaveBands and make a reservation. It'll cost you $15 per person, and it'll be the best money you ever spent. Be sure to tell them you want to go to Palo on your repeat-restaurant night. There are four nights and three main restaurants (not counting Palo), so they will schedule you for two nights at either Triton, Animator's Palate or Parrot Cay. Sacrifice one of your repeat nights for Palo. Enough said!

Have fun!!!

Also, guys, do NOT dare miss the Art of the Theme walking tour of the ship. Should happen on the sea day. (If Lisa is conducting the tour, be sure to mention that Brett says she looks like Marcia Brady, which she does.) You will find the tour fun, informative and really quite amazing.
