30 magical years..our anniversary trip!-updated: the End and notes for next time

I am sorry about the bad day at Disney. DHS is my least favorite park, my dh is not a thrill ride person and the shows have not changed in years. We go one morning for the toy story ride, and Beauty and the Beast then leave. Then we come back one night for the final showing of AI (the talent is better) and eat at Brown Derby.

Hi!

I'm enjoying your trip report so much, as we just got back a few days ago.

I had to laugh when you said that you couldn't find Beaches n Cream. THANK YOU! I actually stayed at BCV, and had to follow my husband to it the two times we went... I kept getting turned around and couldn't find it, either. I can tell you that it's right by the pool... but which pool? And where??? :rotfl:

Pop looks like a great resort. I'm getting ready to plan for next year, and Pop is on my short list. I was thinking of Pop or maybe the Port Orleans, but I noticed that the bus lines for those two were SOOOOO long... and then our bus #8 back to Beach Club had almost no one waiting. I would love to save some $ this time around. Renting points at Beach Club might be cheaper for us...I don't know, I'll have to see. Pop looks so cute!! I love the big Mickey phone... I have one sitting right here by my computer!

Thanks! Maybe we should have tried American Idol at night, but we were so not impressed with the daytime version. It's disappointing, because I honestly think they could do so much better with that HUGE space.

Welcome home! Yikes, I don't feel quite so bad not being able to find Beaches N Cream, since you even stayed there and had trouble. I wonder why Disney wants to hide this place??:confused3

We enjoy staying at POP, but you have to remember that the value resorts are very, very different from the deluxes and villas. They are more like decorated motels, with the entrance to the room on the outside (no interior hallways). I know that kind of surprised me at first about the values and moderates at Disney. I love that you are already planning for next year!:goodvibes

September 9th-that's a lot of chicken!=a day at the beach!

After a kind of disappointing Disney day (who knew there could even *be* a disappointing Disney day, right??):confused3, we started this day with a "discussion". Now this discussion was gee, I thought we were going to the beach yesterday, and gee, we probably should have gone to the beach yesterday, and gee, why didn't we go to the beach yesterday. Well, that was yesterday, dear, today is today. And, you know what, let's go to the beach...Today!:thumbsup2

The original plan was to go for a day trip to Clearwater, because one, we had never been there before, and two, we kind of wanted to see a Florida sunset. But, a few things kind of didn't make sense about that plan, one I was worried about the recent oil spill, two I wanted to get back to Disney before sunset, and three, it seemed kind of a distance for a day trip. And four, the final thing was when we asked a POP Century cast member about it, he told us that Clearwater was more of a city than a beach. We wanted a beach, and he recommended Daytona as being the closest to Disney and a true beach.

We had been to Daytona once before, but decided it was a beach and it was the ocean and we wanted to go to the ocean, so Daytona Beach, here we come...again...:goodvibes

Once we were on the road there, I remembered that we had map-quested from Orlando and Disney World isn't really *in* Orlando, so that the drive turned out to be just a wee bit longer than I liked for a day trip. Still doable, just a bit too long.

Then, we got to the beach. WOW! The beach!:banana:

2009-0910%20DMW%20015.jpg

I forgot how magnificent gazing at the ocean can be. How powerful and yet relaxing the waves washing against the shore can seem. How the sun can glisten on the water. How soft the sand can be. Again, WOW! The beach!!!:banana::love:

I did *not* want to leave the beach! So, what do folks who don't want to leave the beach do? Well, they check with the hotel they stayed at before in Daytona to see if there is a room available. And, low and behold, it was the off season, and low and behold, there was a room available, and low and behold, it was a decent price. So, WOW! The beach!!!:banana:

IMG_3200.jpg

Of course, since this was a spur-of-the-moment decision, we had nothing with us for an overnight trip. We went to the store and bought some essential "stuff" (including later on, some t-shirts at a t-shirt shop on the beach). We were also told there was a deli and we could get some chicken for lunch. We bought a HUGE carton of chicken for like seven bucks. That chicken became our lunch AND our dinner. That's a lot of chicken!!!!:rotfl:

I know that this is a Disney trip report, and I won't spend a lot of time reporting on the beach, but we had a great hotel there (kitchnette, ocean front balcony, free cocktail hour--awesome perk!=gotta love those free Bahama Momma cocktails!, free breakfast, pool, HOT TUB for my aching foot!) for less than you would pay for a room at POP Century normally without a discount.

And, it is so cool to hear the waves at night! And, we had a *great* reason to get up early the next morning...an incredibly gorgeous sunrise.:cool1:

:cool1:

Now I know that we *could* have made the beach a day trip, but I am so glad we decided to spend the night, as for us, the beach was just about perfect, and a wonderful little break in the middle of our Disney magic!:goodvibes

up next: a day at Epcot and a visit to Canada!

September 10th; return to Epcot and Canada and Le Cellier!!!

So, we wake up to this glorious sunrise at the beach. Oh. My. Goodness. :cool1:We were like wayyyy impressed with this. Who needs to see the sun"set" when you have a sun"rise" like this one?! It really was beautiful!

IMG_3236.jpg

We headed downstairs for our complimentary breakfast and planned the day.

Mark wanted to know if we really had to go back to Disney. :confused3Well, yes, dear, we really do, not only are all of our wordly (well wordly for this trip anyway) belongings at Disney, we are also paying for a room at Disney and besides all of that, there is still Disney stuff to see and do!!
:goodvibes
After driving back to Disney, and making sure our room was okay and our stuff was still there!:thumbsup2, the plan was to hit Epcot for the afternoon and maybe go back to the Magic Kingdom for a short while before it was closed for Night of Joy.

Back into the trusty little blue car we went and headed over to Epcot. First thing we did is get fast passes for Soarin' as I knew we wanted to go Soarin' again! I had a reservation at LeCellier for lunch. This was another one of those restaurants that I really, really wanted to go to on this trip, and had looked and looked online for availability and just grabbed it when it came up. We were kind of excited to go here and maybe just a bit hungry for something that wasn't chicken!

LeCellier is just like it sounds...you go in there and it's like a cellar as it is kind of dark, and cozy, and cool (celebrate air conditioning!). The tables are kind of close together, but we had a nice table against a back wall, so it felt more private to me.

Mark ordered a steak meal. Mark thought the steak was good, but honestly, he didn't find it extraordinary in anything but the price.

Now when it's like 90 degrees outside with matching humidity, soup is probably not the first thought in most people's heads, but I had read so much about this soup that I really wanted to try it for myself. And, I wanted some of that pretzel bread. And a beer! Yep, the Canadian cast member told me I was doing okay at ordering a "traditional" type Canadian meal. Go, Canada!!!:yay:

As a celebration of our anniversary, our server brought us each a glass of champagne...Awww!!

IMG_3254.jpg

After our meal, we were not yet ready to leave the country of Canada, so we walked around the gorgeous gardens they have there.

IMG_3263.jpg

and hung around to see the movie called Oh, Canada! decided They changed this movie and it waaaayyyy better than what it used to be. We enjoyed the new version! Oh, Canada, indeed!!!

I had read that Captain E-Oh was back at Epcot, and being a true Michael Jackson groupie, wanted to see this one, so we went back over to Future World and waited for the next showing. This was truly a blast to the past!!!: (Although honestly, I kind of missed seeing Honey I Shrunk the Audience in this place!)

It was time to go Soarin' again, and this was the first time we were in the front row, so there were no dangling feet in front of us to ruin the illusion. Awesome ride with great special effects. I am sure most people know this, but it always amazes me that the guy who designed this got the idea and stuff for this by playing with toys!

Since we were on the Future World side, we decided to go and view the fish in the Living Seas. I think the fish population has grown!!! There were also a few human fish in the tank and actually a guy who actually proposed to his girlfriend while they were in there.(She said yes, thank goodness!)

We were then going to leave Epcot and go to the Magic Kingdom for an hour or so, so we were heading out of the park, when we once again saw virtually no line for Spaceship Earth. What do you think we did? Yep, we rode it again! :goodvibes

Now here's where it got kind of ugly...we left the park and waited for the monorail to the Transportation and Ticket Center. We got off there, and were going to take the monorail to the Magic Kingdom, *but*, the monorail to the Magic Kingdom was closed. They were only allowing people to go to the Magic Kingdom by ferry, and the line was huge. Like really huge! We got in the line, but then I looked at Mark and said no, I just don't want to do this right now.:confused3 (I think they were letting people in early for Night of Joy and the crowds were already building up, and I knew the park was going to close at 7anyway). So, instead of fighting the crowds for the Magic Kingdom, we went back up to the short line for the monorail back to Epcot.

When we got back to Epcot, once again, we had no real plan, so we just wandered around the countries for a bit (I like the train set-up in Germany!). I went back to Italy to buy something I had seen earlier. We went to England and actually saw a bit of the Beatles show, the British Invasion. That was fun!:)

By this time, it was dinnertime and from our experience the other day at Epcot, I knew they did not have a lot of choices for counter service meals. We ended up grabbing something to eat at the American restaurant (typical American hamburger meals!} Nothing too fancy, but the burgers we had were actually pretty good.

We didn't really want to stay at Epcot for Illuminations, and actually, the sky was starting to put on its own Illuminations, as there was some brilliant, blue dramatic lightening flashes all across the lagoon.:scared1: We kind of decided that our day had been long enough, and headed back to the little blue car and our nice comfy bed in our nice room at POP Century to dream of our next Disney day!!!

Up next: Magic Kingdom, and a special visit with Eeyore and Friends!!

What a nice day. Beautiful sunrise!! We've done LeCellier once, hope to get back there someday. Have to say though that I wouldn't have been able to leave before Illuminations - just love that show!

I was actually very surprised by how pretty the sunrise was, as I kinda have a "thing" for sunsets; this sunrise was just about perfect, though.:cool1: We were both kind of exhausted Friday after driving back from the beach and then being at Epcot the rest of the afternoon, and with the lightening, we were not sure if they were even going to show Illuminations or not, so we made the executive decision to just go back to POP and call it a day! (If we had not seen it before, I know we would have stayed, but we had seen the Illuminations show earlier in the week already). :)

I promise to get back and finish this *soon*! That annoying little "real life" keeps gettin' in the way!:)

I look forward to the rest of your report, but I understand how real life gets in the way of Disney memories sometimes.

Saturday, September 11th-Magic Kingdom and a visit with Eeyore and Friends!

Today we would have been leaving and starting our LONG drive back to Chicago if we had chosen to drive to Disney, however, since we had done the flying thing, we still had one whole Disney day ahead of us!!:cool1:

We decided we needed to spend a bit more time at the Magic Kingdom. I am also a big collector of Precious Moments figurines, and had read that there was going to be a signing in the jewelry store at the MK.

I know it was September 11th and people might have been commemorating the anniversary of the tragedy of this day, but I expected more crowds at the Magic Kingdom, and was happy to experience the park as pleasantly un-crowded.

We had no real agenda for today, just to experience some of the rides/attractions/shows/parades/magic/you know, Disney stuff one more day! Well, other than we did have a very important lunch date with my favorite character, Eeyore!:goodvibes

We wandered around and did the ride thing for awhile (I will never get tired of Peter Pan's Flight!--I am such a kid at heart, I guess!). We went by the Rose Garden, isn't that just a beautiful area?? I have only gone on Splash Mountain *once* and I was determined to try it again (after all, I had gotten on an airplane, right, what's a drop on a ride compared to that??). So, I sent Mark off to get us a fast pass for Splash, and I headed over to the jewelry store where the signing was supposed to happen.

Note the words, supposed to happen, because when I got there there was no one signing and no one in the store had the slightest clue what I was talking about. But, the cast members in the store couldn't have been nicer...they even offered to give me a fast pass for the inconvenience. Aww..how nice of them, they really didn't have to do that.

By then, it was time for our special lunch date. I love, love, love the whole atmosphere at the Crystal Palace Restaurant, it is so bright, cheery and airy. And the fact that the Winnie the Pooh folks, especially my man Eyeore are there just makes it even better. Oh, yeah, and the buffet is good, too!

When we got to our table, they had little confetti made into a heart shape for our anniversary. How sweet was that!

We enjoyed our lunch and our visit with those characters,

IMG_3356.jpg

and the air conditioning (did I mention it was kind of HOT??)...and then we wandered out and it was time to do the Splash Mountain thing.

Well, yeah, no. I kept looking at the hill and going yeah, no. I don't think so. But, then I kept thinking if I didn't go, I would be mad at myself. I knew I wanted to see the cute little story and stuff, so I took a deep breath, told myself to stop wimping out and got in line behind a family with a little girl. I said to them if she's going on this, I think I can, too. And, they looked at me and said, yeah, she doesn't know what she's gettting into! UGH!

But, I stayed in the line (no chicken exit this time) and I really LOVED the ride!!! It was great fun to see the story and the song and cute little characters. Of course, I screamed doing the drop thing, but being that it was so hot, even the water felt great!!:cool1:
IMG_3374.jpg

We wanted to do something kind of patriotic to remember 9/11, so we went to the Hall of Presidents. That was a kind of a somber moment, but it was interesting to see how Disney reworked that to include President Obama.

We wandered around a bit after that, stopping in some stores and just taking in a bit more magic, before we said our final good byes to the Magic Kingdom, and headed back to POP.

Up Next: The Wrap Up: Summary and Notes for Next Time!

That was a great picture of you and Eeyore.

Plus congratulations on braving Splash Mtn, I love riding through and singing along that ride.

Congrats on braving Splash! We too love CP but usually hit it for an early pre-opening breakfast. Bummer on the Precious Moments signing, wonder what happened.

Sounds like a very nice MK day.

Thanks for the congrats! I know I would have been soooooo mad at myself it I had wimped out! Never done breakfast at CP; I like the idea of a pre-opening meal, though. I loved the time we did the Keys to the Kingdom tour and got in to MK early and there was literally no one there, that was really, really cool!:thumbsup2

September 11th, evening and September 12th: All Good Things Must End!

The evening of September 11th, we kind of chilled a bit by POP Century. It was just kind of a relaxing evening for awhile thinking of the week that was. But, then I wanted to do the shopping thing, so we drove our trusty little blue car over to Downtown Disney. UGH!:scared1: Mistake!!! Huge, huge, ugly crowds...I guess that is what things are like on a Saturday night when it's kind of raining and the MK is closed except for Night of Joy and the other parks are closed, too. We only went into the World Of Disney store, but that was okay, because I still managed to spend quite a bit of $$!:rotfl2:

Sunday we got the dreaded "Good Morning!" envelope with smiling Mickey stuck to our door. (That is really one Mickey Mouse I do *not* care for at all!!!!) We had a quick breakfast (well, it should have been quicker, we were really hustling to get to to the airport!) eating outside in the Florida sunshine:), and then took the trusty little blue car to the car return (good job, little blue car, thanks for the memories!). The plane flight home was uneventful, and then my brother and his wife picked us up at the airport. The weather at home was absolutely gorgeous, sunny, a cool breeze, not too hot or humid..my brother and his wife treated us to lunch (we ate outside!). We even got a special desert treat for our anniversary!!! So, coming back to reality wasn't as hard as I thought it might be!:goodvibes

Notes for next time:

Resort: POP is a great resort for us, still, I would really, really try harder to get a room closer to the main area. There is a LOT of walking that needs to be done at Disney, and I don't think it's necessary to add to it! Remember my sore foot??? Well, since we have been back, I have been diagnosed with and struggling with Plantar Fasciaitis. I guess Disney did me in this time!:confused3 (I have been told I was heading that way anyway, but I am sure all the walking didn't help matters much!)

A break to go to the beach in the middle of a trip is a GREAT idea...it was very relaxing, and would do that again in a heartbeat!:thumbsup2

Meals: Very favorite this trip would have to be 'Ohana. Great time, great food, gorgeous view of the fireworks..yeah, go 'Ohana!:cool1:

Parks: We had a park hopper pass; I think it depends on your style of touring, length of stay and stuff, but next time I think we would just get the pass without the hopper (we only really used the option one time all week!)

Flying: Yes. 'Nuff said.:)

Renting a Car: Go Little Blue Car! I am so glad we had a car, not only for getting from the airport and back, but also for our beach escape, and surprising to me, to even go to the parks and back!

That about wraps it up for me. Any questions or thoughts, please just ask here or feel free to send me a PM. Until then, thanks for sharing our memories, and have a magical Disney day!!!:goodvibes

Finally trying to catch up on my DISing, darn 'life' getting in the way. ;)
