A family friend claims that you get 30% off your next Walt Disney World vacation if you book it while on your Current Disney vacation. We've been throwing out the idea of upgrading to a deluxe next Christmas and if that's the case, we'd totally book our next trip while we're here.

Has anyone ever done this?

That's called a bounce back offer. They vary, and are time limited. You will have to wait and see what the current offer is when you arrive.

Bounce back also often has blackout dates. Christmas would undoubtedly be blacked out.

Definitely book it, if it's available for your dates. I booked next year while I was there last week. Got 30% for deluxe in Aug and Dec (mid december). The best part is, once you book, you lock into the discount and can switch resorts, room types, dates(if available) after you get back home. You have to pay the $200 deposit (if package) or 1 nights room if room only reservation.
