3 WDW Trips in 6 months: August, October and December Reports *Completed*

Hi Meeko!

Hope you had a good Christmas, and Santa was good to you! :santa:

Great updates, I love seeing POFQ again, brings back so many lovely memories! It looks lovely with the decorations, we never saw that last year. The theming with Princess and the Frog is very fitting for it! Hope you got a chance to sample some biegnets and another pain au chocolat!

Looking forward to the next installment!

Hope you and your family have a Happy Hogmany and a Guid Ne'erday! (Good New Year's Day - Scots translation!)

Hey Di! Hope you had a good Christmas too. Ours was very nice- peaceful and fun.

Oh, you can be sure there'll be plenty of beignets over the next few days of the trip though. No pain au chocolat this time though. I don't remember seeing any at French Quarter, but then again, I may have been distracted by all the beignets. :cloud9:

Thanks for the Scots New Years wish and the same for you and your family.

More great pictures! I love the names of the streets.

Well, who wouldn't be distracted by them?? :rotfl:

Our Christmas was good fun, just had all the family round and I went all Nigella in the kitchen! :goodvibes

Thanks. Aren't those street names great? I think that Rue d'Bega is our family's favorite.

Very true about the beignets. Sounds like a nice Christmas for you too.

From Riverside, we took a bus to the Magic Kingdom. We had figured that this would be the quickest way to get to the Contemporary, but I have to admit, it was a bit of a tease as well since it we wouldn’t be visiting Magic Kingdom on this trip- especially as we approached the park and they started playing music from the various attractions and Cinderella Castle and Space Mountain came into view.

contemporary1-600.jpg

We were planning on taking the monorail, but with all the stories that we were hearing around that time of the monorail breaking down and guests being stuck up there almost daily for up to 6 hours, we figured it would be safer just to walk to the resort. It’s a short walk, plus it gave us a more of a chance to see some of the sights of the park.

contemporary2-600.jpg

Space Mountain- now up and running again.

contemporary3-600.jpg

Just across the street is the Contemporary complete with brand-new giant Mickey wreath on the side.

contemporary4-600.jpg

After deciding not to take the monorail, it appeared that they were still running fine- or so it seemed. Minutes after we got there, we noticed another monorail on the other side of the lagoon closer to the Grand Floridian and Polynesian stopped on the track. Turned out that it was only stopped for a few minutes though which I think it fairly normal (it’s happened to us a few times). At any rate, I think that walking to the resort turned out to be the best idea since the walk from the bus stop to the Monorail station probably wouldn’t have been much shorter than the walk from the bus stop to the Contemporary.

contemporary5-600.jpg

On the walk over, we also managed to get a quick look at the now-opened Bay Lake Tower. It’s somewhat interesting looking, but not especially that interesting to me (besides its proximity to the Magic Kingdom). I still miss the old area of the Contemporary they tore down to build the new Tower. We stayed there year ago when it was still there and really enjoyed the short walk to Magic Kingdom and the nice view of the park and Wishes out the window.

contemporary7-600.jpg

Before heading inside, we checked out the giant tree in the entrance courtyard.

contemporary8-600.jpg

contemporary9-600.jpg

Inside, there were some smaller trees. This was actually our first time visiting the Contemporary since it had its makeover a few years back. The new decor was nice, but didn’t seem drastically unique. I was also a bit surprised to see a new coffee bar in the lobby where they use to do Christmas gingerbread displays.

contemporary10-600.jpg

Also new to the resort since out last visit- our dinner destination for the evening. Even though we had close to an hour before our ADR time, Dad went to the restaurant early to make sure our ARD was in the system (after our ADR somehow didn’t make it from the central Disney database to the ADR list at Yak & Yeti in August, I don’t think Dad wanted to take any chances). Turns out that The Wave wasn’t all that busy, and they were willing to take us early. We wanted to spend some time before dinner checking out some of the Christmas decorations upstairs at the Grand Canyon Concourse, so he said we’d be back later.

contemporary11-600.jpg

Upstairs, we found the Contemporary’s Holiday gingerbread display. This year’s display was inspired by artist Mary Blair who designed the both the Grand Canyon mural in the resort and the It’s A Small World attraction.

contemporary14-600.jpg

At the center of the display is a giant Christmas tree made of gingerbread.

contemporary12-600.jpg

Behind it, is a Mary Blair-style backdrop complete with the a Small World-esque smiling clock tower.

contemporary13-600.jpg

Around the base, a number of cookies decorated as children of the world surround the tree.

contemporary17-600.jpg

contemporary15-600.jpg

As you may notice, cash registers sit at both side of the display to sell cookies inspired by the display at a higher price than I could ever picture myself paying for a single cookie.

contemporary16-600.jpg

contemporary18-600.jpg

And, of course, the tree had more than a couple of hidden Mickeys

Next chapter: “Holiday Fun” and dinner at The Wave

I love the decorations at the CR! I had never heard good things about their decorations so that was one of the only resorts we skipped last year. Now I'm sorry! I love IASW! Thanks for sharing!!

I love the addition of the Mickey wreath to the Contemporary. I think they should have something like that all year round....or do they? Hmmm.

I love the picture of the Wave "tunnel" with the Christmas tree at the end, very pretty.

I'm not terrible impressed with the gingerbread tree. I don't know. I think they could do something better....but that's just me.

Happy New Year everybody. Here's hoping for a great 2010!

A lot of the decorations at the Contemporary are new this year including the Mickey wreath and Small World display. I think they've really stepped up the decorations this year because of the addition of the Bay Lake Tower. When we stayed there a couple of years back, pretty much all they had was a the tree outside and a smaller display based on Pinocchio in the lobby where the coffee shop is now.

I don't think they have something year all year round. Maybe if they see the wreath as a sucess, they might look into having something there when it isn't Christmas. We'll see, though.

I think the Gingerbread tree is more impressive in person. It wasn't as cool as the gingerbread house at the Grand Floridian, but I think it's an improvement over the displays that they use to have. I just wish they didn't have the sales counter and cash registers in front of the display. Makes it harder for photographs and looking at the display.

Happy New Year!

I saw on some show that they were doing that gingerbread tree at the Contemporary. It is cool but I agree, there are some better displays at other resorts.

Yeah, there are more impressive displays out there, but I still thought it was pretty cool. This was also still it's first year, so maybe they'll learn from this year and be able to improve it for next year.

With still a little while before our ADR time at The Wave, we decided to spend some time checking out the rest of the of the Grand Canyon Concourse. Dad took the opportunity to check the shops to see if he could find a shirt that might be more suitable to wear to dinner since the one he intended to wear was in the suitcase he accidentally left at home. He had more success here than at the French Quarter and found a polo shirt that looked almost like the one he left behind (with the exception of a small Mickey logo above the pocket). Buzz had some shopping success here too, finding a limited edition Kermit the Frog pin.

contemporaryb1-600.jpg

contemporaryb3-600.jpg

More of Mary Blair’s work in the Grand Canyon mural.

contemporaryb4-600.jpg

One of my favorite little touches in the Concourse is this model hidden away near the elevators. In keeping with the Small World theme, it’s a replica of the Tower of the Four Winds that was a part of the original It’s A Small World attraction at the 1964 World’s Fair in New York. The Tower didn’t survive the move from New York to the Disney parks and was replaced by a new façade also designed by Mary Blair to match the rest of the ride, so it’s neat to see it make it to Disney World in some form.

contemporaryb5-600.jpg

By now, the sun was going down and the lights on the giant Mickey wreath on the side of the building was turned on, so we headed out to the observation deck between the concourse and the walkway to Bay Lake Tower. The deck also had a great view of the Magic Kingdom and Cinderella Castle which we figured would be great viewing for the Castle Dream Lights when they turned on.

Near the entrance to the observation deck, we saw a sign that announced that there would be “Holiday Fun” there that evening at a couple of scheduled times. The first time was fairly soon, so we decided to stick around and find out exactly what “Holiday Fun” was. Turned out to be a performance of Christmas songs sung by local high school choir. It was a nice and festive little surprise for the evening.

contemporaryb6-600.jpg

After the choir performance, the Castle Lights were all lit up. Even though we didn’t go to the Magic Kingdom on this trip, I’m glad that we at least got to see the Castle Dream Lights somehow.

contemporaryb7-600.jpg

Even though we still had a while before our ADR time, we made our way down to The Wave to see if we could get in early. Turns out we could, so we were at our table in about 5 to 10 minutes.

contemporaryb8-600.jpg

The Wave’s décor was fairly interesting, but besides cool entrance tunnel, I didn’t think it was as remarkable as some of the other restaurants at Disney World. It’s very modern and very dark with a definite wave motif going on everything from the ceiling to the chairs. It looked a lot nicer than the last time we were at the Contemporary and this space was the not as attractive counter service burger place.

contemporaryb9-600.jpg

One of the lighting fixtures above the restaurant.

The main attraction at The Wave, however, is no doubt the food. We were told by our waiter who told us that the restaurant is Disney’s first restaurant that specializes in all organic and sustainable dishes which Mom and Dad especially thought was cool. This was after he sat down at our table with us, asked us where he was from, and talked for minutes about one of his other jobs, which I thought was somewhat awkward, but whatever. Better to have an overly personable server than a bad one. To be honest, I wasn’t thrilled with the menu when I saw it; there wasn’t a lot of items on there that really appeal to me. I ended up getting the cinnamon-rubbed pork tenderloin which was the thing that looked most appealing despite the fact that I don’t really like pork. Imagine my surprise when it turns out to be delicious. I really was impressed with it. Mom and Dad ended up getting Lamb Shank and Buzz got the Flank Steak and everyone really liked their meals as well. All in all, The Wave was definitely a winner for us, and I could see us revisiting it in the future.

contemporaryb10-600.jpg

After dinner, I wanted to check out the courtyard outside especially because I’ve never managed to get a photo of the Sorcerer’s Apprentice topiary out there. Shortly after this, however, we were about ready to head back to the French Quarter for the night.

contemporaryb11-600.jpg

One last look at the Contemporary for the trip (note the motion blur of the monorail going into the hotel).

contemporaryb12-600.jpg

On the walk back to the bus stop, we also managed to get our last look at the Magic Kingdom of the trip. Perhaps we’ll make it into the park again on our next trip.

Unlike at the other parks, French Quarter and Riverside do not share a single bus at Magic Kingdom, so the line at the bus stop was pretty short and everybody waiting for the bus ended up getting a seat on the bus. I knew better than to expect this to happen when we were sharing a bus with the much-larger Riverside, but enjoyed it for the night. Back at French Quarter, we spent the rest of the evening relaxing in the rooms. We had a big day the next day at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and wanted to be sure to be well rested and ready for an early start.

Next chapter: We’re going to Hollywood!

Hey Jen! Glad you're enjoying the pictures, and yes, even with the rain, it was such a fantastic (and merry) trip. :santa:

The evening pics are great! But then all your pics are great! Have you studied photography (sorry if you've covered this before) or just learned on your own? Looking forward to more popcorn::

Aww, thanks Dawn. I don't think anybody has ever asked if I've ever studied photography before. I actually have never taken any class or anything before, but Buzz has taken a bunch so he gives me a few pointers every now and then. Mostly though, I'd saw I'm self-taught. Glad you like the pics.

As usual at Disney, our day started early- around 6am. Today, we were heading to Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and we wanted to be sure to get to the park early to ride Toy Story Mania first thing.

poday21-600.jpg

While the rest of the family was still getting ready, I went out to take a few photos before breakfast.

poday22-600.jpg

Inside the food court, I found a few more Princess and the Frog inspired touches among the Mardi Gras props around the restaurant including Frog Prince Naveen…

poday23-600.jpg

and, of course, Princess Tiana.

poday24-600.jpg

These two were practically hidden in the back corner of the restaurant across from the table set for kids to color at. Out of all of the Princess and the Frog touches around the resort, I’m guessing these have the biggest chance of surviving the Christmas season (with the possible exception of the window display at the gift shop). These two just seem to fit so well with the décor of the rest of the food court.

poday25-600.jpg

More of the Mardi Gras props around the food court.

poday26-600.jpg

poday27-600.jpg

After looking around the food court, I headed back to the lobby until the rest of the family. It wasn’t long until the four of us heading back to the food court for some breakfast. If you’ve been reading this report, you know some of my favorite breakfast treats in all of Disney World are the beignets at the French Quarter, so Buzz and I got an order to split for breakfast.

poday28-600.jpg

The weather was still fairly nice, so we ended up getting a table outside and enjoyed having some breakfast at one of the sidewalk tables in the courtyard as the sound of jazz-inspired rensitions of Christmas songs filled the air.

poday29-600.jpg

Another look at some of the Princess and the Frog decorations around the courtyard.

poday210-600.jpg

A different perspective on the garland on the outside lampposts.

poday211-600.jpg

Another shot of the ornaments on one of the tree in the lobby on the way to the bus stop. Remember this scene from the movie?

We didn’t have too long of a wait for a bus, so it wasn’t long until we were at the Studios.

dhsentrance1-600.jpg

Our first stop of the day was the Hollywood Studios Christmas tree.

dhsentrance2-600.jpg

I think the retro Santa ornaments are my favorite ones on the tree. They’re just so perfect for Hollywood Studios.

dhsentrance3-600.jpg

Around the tree were displays featuring the characters.

dhsentrance4-600.jpg

dhsentrance5-600.jpg

dhsentrance6-600.jpg

After checking out the tree, we headed to the park entrance to join the rest of the crowd in waiting for rope drop.

Next Chapter: Toy Story Mania

It's totally understandable that you're behing. You're going to WDW next week after all! Glad you got to see all the French Quarter photos. I was really working to make sure that these posted before you left, so I'm glad you enjoyed them.

Hi Meeko,

The Wave looked really nice and the food sounded lovely. Sounds a bit posh though for us having the kids - was there any children when you were there, or is it more of a 'grown up's only' restaurant?

Loving all the photos of POFQ, especially with all the Princess and the Frog details. Saw the film last week so I can really relate to them more now!

I can almost smell the biegnets! :cloud9: But no photos of them? ;)
