Disclaimer - This is going to be very long so please bear with me. Thanks.

My cousin Laura and I have been travelling to Disney once a year for the last 12 years or so. We have stayed at Coronado Springs, Port Orleans - FQ, Port Orleans Riverside (which I still refer to as Dixie Landings) and one stay at the All Star Music. Our absolute favorite is PO-FQ (we consider it our home away from home) so that is where we decided to stay again. We also decided to treat ourselves to 3 nights at a deluxe and had settled on the AKL. Unfortunately (or fortunately) we were kicked out of PO-FQ due to renovations and we were offered an upgrade to either the AKL or WL for only $30 more per night so since we were already staying 3 nights at AKL, we chose the WL, which is another one I always wanted to try.

We stayed at AKL from 12/6 - 12/9. From the moment I walked into this place I knew that I had found a new home. I absolutely fell in love. Our room was number 3453. It was on Zebra Trail facing the Uzima Savannah. I laughed that we were on Zebra trail, but didn't get to view any Zebra from our room. We had an awesome room, on lobby level, right off of the main hallway so we didn't get any hallway traffic. It was a quick walk to the lobby and our view was fantastic. We saw tons of animals. The room was beautifully decorated, I loved the tile in the bathroom so much that I want to re-do my bathroom at home. I know people have complained about the dark lighting in the room, but we had no problem with it at all. The lobby was magnificent and we spent a couple of late nights sitting in what felt like our own little sitting room in our pajamas drinking hot chocolate and tea. Every single cast member we encountered was wonderful. They were so beyond nice and helpful. I really loved it here and will definitely be returning. I would love to spend my entire vacation at this hotel all the time, but unfortunately will only be able to afford a couple of nights and will have to switch to a moderate. I can't wait to bring my husband and daughter here. One more thing, bus service was fantastic, we never waited for a bus for more than 5 minutes. Also, it was heaven not to have to share a bus with other hotels.

On Tuesday, 12/9, with great sadness we checked out of AKL and moved to the WL, where we stayed until 12/13. I had read so many great things about the WL and thought for sure that I would love it and I really wanted to, but I didn't. Maybe if I had stayed here first I would have liked it more, but after the AKL nothing compared. There wasn't anything really wrong with the WL, I just didn't get that OMG feeling that I got with the AKL. The lobby was incredibly beautiful, especially with the Christmas decorations, but we found it to be really loud whereas at the AKL we always felt like we were the only ones there. We had reserved a woods view and they gave us a complimentary upgrade to courtyard view, which was a really nice surprise. The room (#3148) was a bit of a hike though from the main lobby. We requested bunk-beds because my other cousin (Laura's sister) Annmarie, was meeting us this day and staying with us for the rest of the week and nobody wanted to share a bed (we do that at home with our husbands) so we got the bunk-beds, which were actually quite fun. I had a heck of a time climbing down from that thing and it made for lots of laughs, but other than that we felt the room was very dated. The bathroom had wallpaper peeling off of the wall and the tub had obviously not been cleaned since it was very gritty. Normally stuff like that would not bother me, and it really didn't this time. It certainly didn't take away from my vacation, but I found myself comparing everything to the AKL, probably unfair but I couldn't help it. We greatly enjoyed Whispering Canyon Cafe and would definitely return to the WL to eat, but I don't think I would stay there again. I just didn't feel like WL was very "deluxe". Also, after the great bus service at AKL, I found the bus service at WL severely lacking. One night we waited so long for a Downtown Disney bus that we just gave up and went back to the room for the night. We did enjoy the boat ride to MK, it was quick and convenient. It was also convenient in getting to Fort Wilderness for the Hoop De Doo. I hope that I didn't offend any WL lovers, I know there are many of you. I guess that is the great thing about Disney, there are so many options for everyone to find the place they really love. I also want to add that we found the cast members here to be just as wonderful as the ones at AKL.

Thanks for reading my reviews. I hope it was helpful to anyone planning. I do want to say to anyone who is thinking about the WL, please don't make a decision based on my review, you might love it the way I love AKL. I just wanted to share my experiences. :D

Hi -

Annmarie's cousin Laura here -- I just thought I'd put my two cents in :D

Annmarie's assesment of the AKL was right on the mark. From the moment our Tiffany Towncar pulled onto the property, until the day we checked out - I was in complete awe. The lobby, the rooms, the view, the service, the restaurants -- everything was grander than the next. It did not disappoint at all.

That being said, I expected the same thing from WL. As Annmarie said, the lobby was breathtaking, WCC was a great place to eat and the proximity to the Magic Kingdom was great. But - the rooms seemed a little dated, housekeeping was not great, and the bus system was horrible.

I might be (unfairly) comparing WL to AKL, but as a deluxe - I think it fell a little short.

Would I stay at AKL again? Without a doubt. (Now I just need to find a way to fund it!!)

Would I stay at WL again? At rack rate - no. If we got another upgrade - maybe.

Comments are welcome :)

Hi!

DD and I just returned from WDW on 12/13, Beach Club. We felt the same way about AKL when we stayed there last March - absolutely LOVED it!!

When we decided to experience Christmas at WDW, we couldn't quite decide, but ended up going with the Beach Club for it's proximity to Epcot, one of our favorites. Well, to say we were disappointed is not quite accurate - BC is beautiful, the pool is wonderful, and access to Epcot, MGM and the Boardwalk is great. But... AKL is so fantastic, we couldn't stop comparing the two, and felt "homesick" for our favorite AKL. We kept talking about our next trip, while we were still at WDW!

Can't wait until next time, AKL here we come!

We just returned from WL and I really liked it. Yes, the rooms were dated, BUT it is a lot older than AKL and probably due for a refurb. The thing I liked more at WL was that the food court was inside the hotel (especially on those 40 degree mornings) and I loved the bike ride to FW. The overall view of the lake, etc, makes me like it better than AKL, but just by a hair. AKL is way up on my list of favorite places!!!!!! Love Jiko better than AP, but Whispering Canyon better than Boma. Still like AP and boma though. Such hardships we endure here on the DIS....

I agree about Roaring Forks being inside as opposed to Mara being outside, but we never ate at Mara so that really didn't make a difference. I would have hated to walk outside to Roaring Forks on those cold mornings though. I didn't eat at either Jiko or Artist Point so I can't compare those, but yeah, you're right, the hardships we endure, lol :)

We stayed at the WL from DEC 9 - DEC 14. We stayed at the AKL in NOV 2001. We really enjoyed the WL with the Christmas decorations. I have to admit, though, I liked the AKL better. I think that the AKL is so different and exciting. The WL is much busier/nosier than the AKL. I think Disney learned a lesson and didn't put the restaurant on the same floor as the lobby in the AKL. The Whispering Canyon restaurant contributes a lot to the noise in the lobby at the WL. I think that there is a very loyal following for the WL and it stays busy. The AKL will have the same loyal following in a few years. WL does have a beach and boat service, but I think the AKL balances that out with the animals. They are both fantastic resorts, but I think that the AKL wins by a nose.

coliebird and mackeysmom - I was wondering, if you were traveling to WDW with two small children (ages 2 and 4) who were obsessed with the Magic Kingdom and you were going to be spending most of your time at that particular park... would you still choose the AKL over the WL??

Also, could you tell me more about your problems with housekeeping at the WL?

Thanks so much! :wave2:

We ADORE Wilderness and will be staying there again in May. However, we are staying at AKL in Feb. I have visited the resort and we always eat at Boma. I am looking forward to staying there and hope it is as awesome as everyone says.

Just my 2 cents - we never had any problems at VWL (the DVC part). The buses always seemed efficient and rooms were clean and fresh. However, I think the villas are newer than the lodge so the lodge could be showing some wear and tear.

Hi TigrLvsPooh -

Even though MK is just a stone's throw from WL, I'd still choose AKL. We never had to wait more than 5 minutes for our bus to arrive, and all routes were direct. Plus, I think the kids would get a big kick out of seeing the animals in the Savannahs.

As for the housekeeping issues -- when we first checked in, we noticed that the bathtub was not clean. It was dirty and gritty - we had to scrub it down before first using it.

We were given very few towels, barely enough for one day's worth of showering. It took multiple requests to get extras.

The beds were barely made each day. Most hotels tuck the sheets in so tightly, it's as though you are in a coffin. At the WL, we pretty much had to make our own beds as it seemed housekeeping merely pulled the blankets up over the unmade sheets.

For what it is worth - Annmarie and I make it a habit to tip "mousekeeping" on a daily basis, and clean up after ourselves.

I just don't want anybody thinking that we are these "crazy, demanding, white-glove-dust-checking" freaks. We are just looking for the basics.

Again, no huge issues. Just little things that you don't expect at a deluxe.

Did it mar our experience? Absolutely not - I'd sleep on a sheet of plastic in the woods if it meant a few extra days in Disney :)

We will be at AKL in February...my first time staying at a Disney Resort! I am SO excited...especially when I read such glowing reviews...LOL

Of course, now I'm worried that wherever we choose to stay on our next trip (haven't decided yet) just won't measure up!
Such hardships we endure here on the DIS....
LOL:rolleyes:

We did the same thing!!! We loved WL but I wanted to try AKL so I conviced my DH & DD to split a stay 1st 3 nites at AKL last 4 at WL...we cried when we had to leave....WL DOES NOT compare to AKL in anyway...AKL is a FAR SUPERIOR resort. I love it!!! I understand how you felt....all 3 of us did...I just wish I would have thought to ask to stay!

You guys are killing me!!! Now I feel like I should switch our WL to AKL.

This thread is also making me want to switch to AKL, Erika! But, we've stayed at WL before, it is nice. :) We can stay at AKL next time.

We drove over to AKL and walked around one time.... it seemed nice but I wasn't really blown away like everyone else. Maybe because it was sort of overcast that particular day and we didn't see any animals.

I hope we enjoy our stay at the WL. :)

I have my first stay booked for Jan staying at the WL. I have stayed at the AKL on my last trip, and LOVED it, but I want to try a new resort for this stay.

Granted, I am from the Pacific Northwest, the WL is northwest themed. I can over look that, I live in the city, not in the mountains :) I thought the boat transportation to Mk and such would outweigh the age of the place? Am I wrong? Should I try to switch to AKL for a 5 night stay? I am leaving in almost 2 weeks, so I am not sure if I can even try... :(

-Erica, worried

We loved WL..until we stayed at AKL...we had visited AKL prior to staying as well...it did not prepare me for the way we fell in love with the resort while staying there...it was the entire experience .....a visit cannot do it justice. You won't be disappointed w/ WL if you have never stayed at AKL...like I said prior to our stay at AKl..WL was our favorite..(am I making sense??) Anyway as far as transporation is concern on our last stay to WL I was not too impressed w/ WL. Even though AKL uses only buses I found them to be very efficent and do not have any complaints!

Thanks for the great post. We are trying to decide where to stay next December. We've stayed at the WL several times and are looking for a change. It's just going to be my wife and I, with another couple. The AKL sounds ideal. Did you have the standard or deluxe savanna view? Thanks again. :)

Hi Dana49 -

We had a savannah view room. It cost a little bit more, but it was well worth it.

The public viewing areas are great and they have guides to answer all of your questions, but it was so great to open up the curtains in your own room and feel as though you are "thisclose" to the animals.

Overall, savannah view or standard view, you'll love it :)

I'm with the minority, but our family preferred WL to AKL. Both are beautiful hotels, but for us WL is the better hotel hands down. We loved taking the boat to MK and never had any waits with busses. At AKL we felt we were removed from everything (except AK). Also, the atmosphere at AKL didn't do as much for us. Of course, we loved waking up every morning and seeing the animals, but other than that it was just a hotel.

That being said, I'd go back to either of them (or any other Disney hotel) in a heartbeat!
