We are 3 sleeps away from 4 nights at VGC ... giving us 3 full days at DLR. We have 3 day park hoppers and a few key dining reservations:Any suggestions for "Don't Miss!" or "Must do!"?

Given the early park opening hours, I think we might have to skip the Power Walk through DCA this go'round-- but we'll watch to see how the schedule plays out.

Thanks for your ideas!

Any specific tips, ideas or special places to look for in the Hotel/Villa compound? We love sitting in the lobby fireplace, on the rocking chairs, listening to the piano. I do hope to spend some quality time unwinding in that fireplace!

If you want to ride radiator springs racers you have to get their at opening and get a fast pass. We were there last year a few weeks after opening. Very fun ride. My kids were very into cars so they just loved Carsland.

Me personally loved the toon town and storybook land sections of Disneyland park. Storybook land I could almost feel walts touch. Toontown was great as they no longer have Mickey and Minnie's house in WDW. World of color was very cool, and fantastic was very different watching from the park instead of an amphitheater like in DHS. Also space mountain is a completely different roller coaster than in WDW. It's not bobsled, you actually sit side by side. Definitely catch the fireworks by sleeping beauty castle. It's very Different than wishes and they are not guaranteed every night due to the city environment and wind conditions.

Personally I loved it out there.

Have fun it's vacation, if you don't get it all in, there's always next time (the beauty of dvc).

Read Hydroguy's DLR for WDW vets thread.

Eat at Blue Bayou (its much better than Wine Country Trattoria). If you can't eat there, at the very least grab some Mickey beignets from the counter in New Orleans, its tucked in the back by the train station entrance. Flo's V8 Cafe is also wonderful. Also eat some corn dogs from the Little Red Wagon on Main Street.

Other than food ... enjoy Carsland, Space Mountain, California Screamin, etc. Hop as often as you want.

Thanks all!

Carsland: Yes, we'll make a beeline to Radiator Springs Racers (although I'm far more excited about Luigi's Flying Tires?). It is our first visit to this park since WOC first opened (June 2010) ... except for a few early morning powerwalks ... so we are very excited to experience Carsland!

Yes, planning on snacking from both Flo's V8 Cafe and the Cozy Cones. Thanks for reinforcing V8!

LOL - Trattoria vs Blue Bayou. Trattoria and Brennan's were both requested by my DH as "must do." He offered to eat at BB if I insisted, but was relieved when I let him off. My last two experiences at BB were lousy (overcooked food and extremely inattentive service) -- it is no longer on my list.

Our favorite on-property beignets are from the Jazz Kitchen Express at Downtown Disney vs those in park. I think we'll skip those this trip -- but can grab those any visit.

Matterhorn - indeed ... but we did squeeze in rides on both tracks/sides last fall during a hard-ticket H'ween party.

So looking forward to Indiana Jones, Submarines, all of Carsland and the many changes since our last visit to DCA (3 years ago)!

I was going to say, you likely know more than most of the people in here about DLR. :lmao:

Most of the good VGC info flows on the Disneyland board instead of here, but there is a VGC resort threat in the DVC Resorts section, in case you haven't seen it.

For those WDW DVC faithful that may wander to California :scared: pirate:, there are several good threads by HydroGuy regarding Disneyland resort in general. There is also a new thread regarding Carsland Radiator Springs Racers (RSR titled "Wide Right", that discusses the best method to get on the ride first thing!

Otherwise, bwcBound, you know more about DLR than those in here can answer, so what would you suggest you do? :rotfl2:

We made our first trip out to DL last summer and it was amazing. We were there the week carsland opened and it was magical. I hate to be a bubble buster but Luigis Tires isnt a great ride. If the line is longer the 20-30 minutes I would skip it.

We are orlando,fl residents and DL is now my favorite disney park hands down. we cant wait to go back and visit.

It seems like you have your meals planned out, so I would definitely say not to miss Napa Rose on a future trip!

Hard to disagree. I actually liked it, but it wasn't worth the hour or so in line.

Flo's was good and the cozy cone beverage is the same thing they are serving in the new fantasy land expansion. The Lefou (sp?) Brew is the same as the Cozy Cone treat. My kids didn't like it at all, but my wife and I loved it.

Enjoy the trip. I'm extremely jealous!!!

I hear you ... and perhaps it will become a "once and done" experience for us, too. But we must have at least that "once" as we both failed to ride the Flying Saucers of Tomorrowland in the early 60's. We've seen so many re-designs on Tomorrowland and have so many old elements we now miss ... we just gotta ride this thing before it, too, goes away!

Napa Rose is on our "someday" list for a visit w/out parks. Other than Brennan's, I tried to confine the plans for eating in the parks given this rare opportunity.

As this trip is an Anniversary celebration, we gave serious thought to adding Napa Rose ... but it didn't make the cut. It remains, for now, on the "someday" list! :)

The funny thing is, we haven't been doing the parks lately ... and the last time we did Grand Cal + Parks in the same visit was probably 6 or 7 years ago (pre-villas). So, yes, we did the H'ween event last fall (first in ages!) and stayed at Grand Cal in April last year w/out parks ... but this coming adventure seems so foreign! This is our first-ever GCV + Parks visit! (Whoo-hoo!)

When we do visit, which is admittedly often, it is for a D23 event or to meet up with friends for a shared meal in Downtown Disney. For either, we typically stay off-site but w/in walking distance using other nearby timeshare. So, from that perspective, our favorite "meet with friends" locations are appetizers & coffee at Trader Sam's; beignets and chicory coffee at Jazz Kitchen Express; dinner at Brennan's; or if we have a large family group with kids ... the Rainforest Cafe.

In discussing our "must do" for this trip, my husband completely dismissed the Grizzly River Rapids until I reminded him that we could, if needed, easily run back to the room to change. He laughed pretty hard -- having completely forgotten that possibility. So, we were reminded in that moment that we are almost newbies on this particular quest!

We are home and had a wonderful time at DLR. We stuck to the plans listed in my original post. We were most pleased with the Carthay Circle Restaurant with WOC tickets and the Fantasmic! Dessert package. The Wine Country Trattoria itself was good - but we felt that their WOC tickets were oversold resulting in a very crowded, uncomfortable viewing location. Brennan's, this time, was only 'OK.' We might try the Sunday Brunch at Storytellers on a future non-Park visit.

We rode RSR 3x each day and finally got a car that went to Luigi's instead of Ramone's for pre-race prep. We had to ask a ride CM at boarding for help on that special request. ;) I'm glad to say we rode both Luigi's Flying Tires and Mater's Junkyard Jamboree. Both were fun ... and are now in the same mental file as The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh (cute, fun if you have extra time, not a "must do" but certainly brings a smile).

Our seating for the Fantasmic! package was a perfect vantage point for the fireworks. I can't say I normally sit through fireworks -- but the offer to remain in our seats enjoying a refill of coffee won us over. The "Remember ... Dreams Come True" show incorporates several old ride songs and voices. (Two references to Monsanto's Adventure Through Inner Space in one day? How strange!)

Overall, we did everything we hoped to do. We rode all our favorites, some several times; hopped between parks with little thought; spent several long breaks sitting on benches watching people and/or the free-loading ducks; went looking for the new Brabants and participated in horse-talk, met Clarabelle and the Babydolls; did some pin trading; saw Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln and thoroughly enjoyed the pre-show from Voices of Liberty; and spent a rather long time watching a stuck ride vehicle on the Matterhorn. After 45 minutes of waiting, the family was walked off the ride. (They were celebrities with folks waving to them and taking photos.)

Three full days was perfect -- we really felt we did everything. The key was taking full advantage of the early park hours for resort guests ... in that first hour we got as many as 5 major rides!

As for the DVC considerations ...

At four nights, this was our longest stay in a DVC studio. While we missed the jetted tub, kitchen, laundry and extra desk surfaces of a 1BR unit ... we were ok.

Kitchen: We had the mini-fridge packed with vegetables, yogurts and fruits; and we toted several small appliances (Omega juicer, electric kettle, small rice cooker, serious chef knife, cutting board, etc.) to prepare and enjoy light meals and snacks in our room. We were pleased to find real coffee mugs and glassware in the cabinet along with paper plates and plastic utensils. (I was expecting paper/plastic items only -- and was very pleasantly surprised to find ceramic coffee mugs and the glassware!)

Studio Queen Bed: Surprised by the lack of a nightstand on one side, we improvised using available room elements to avoid a trip hazard while charging electronics at night. The bedding was similar to that of Aulani: high end mattress (very comfortable!), duvet encased in easily-cleaned-sheets, exceptional pillows. Great!

Laundry: During check-in we were offered free tokens to use for the shared laundry facility. While we didn't need to run any laundry - we appreciated the gesture.

A/C: Ugh. We woke up overheated every night. Gotta figure out that override? (We were really surprised to be so warm at night. We live nearby and rarely think about indoor temps. At home we keep windows open and are generally quite comfortable without the use of either heat or air. How do we duplicate that "just open a window" sensation while at any Disney Resort?)

We have a return visit on the books for Memorial Weekend (GCV 1BR) and mid-June (off-site timeshare, 1BR) and toyed with upgrading our promotional passes to APs. After long review, we simply couldn't justify the DLR AP prices ... $639 (after DVC discount) for two CA parks with no blackout dates vs just $395 last year for DVC members for 4 WDW parks + Water Parks + DisneyQuest? No, sorry ... that just didn't make sense to us. As we felt we really did get everything done ... we are toying with canceling the May reservation and banking the points. Hmm ... glad to have a few more weeks to think that through .... :rolleyes2

Sounds wonderful! Did you see the Alladin show? It looks like something I would like.

Yes, we did! It was only offered on the first day of our visit and we were sure to get in line early. We had great seats on the first row of the second section so we could be "up close and personal" with the elephant, horses and camels as they paraded through the audience. It was, as always, a great show!

Wow! We don't have plans for DLR until 2014. I hope the show is still there!

How did the DL Space Mountain compare to the WDW Space Mountain? I know it is probably blaspheme, but I think I am done with the WDW version. It is very jerky imho.

What about the Matterhorn? Rumor is it is pretty jerky too!
