I had an embarrassing amount of catching up to do!!

The picture of Peter eating that ginormous sandwich is pretty funny!! Looks like a good amount of food to split between all of you though. It's so expensive to eat in Disney that it's great when sharing is a good option.

It was so nice of that CM to let the girls meet Snow White without waiting for the next meet, but I can imagine being shoved quickly into a princess dress without warning was a bit jarring for Emma!

So nice that you were able to have dinner with a view of Illuminations. And Peter's face waiting for that monorail ride is priceless!! That's one of Paxton's favorites too.

Too bad about missing the welcome show, especially now that they have changed it. I am having a hard time adjusting to the fact that we saw so many things for the last time without realizing it at the time and fully appreciating it as the last time, Welcome Show & Wishes included!

We were pretty happy with the food there - both quantity and quality. Definitely a good option if you want fairly simple food but that is a little different than what you would likely get at home

Really liked the meal at Spice Road and just nice to sit and relax (with some wine) while watching Illuminations. Yeah, definitely worth the effort for how happy it made Peter to go on the monorail again

I know! We didn't realize at the time either that it would be our last time seeing Wishes. I am cautiously optimistic about the new show after hearing the bit of music from it that they have released - gave me similar feelings as the music to Wishes does

Yup - same here with regards tot he PP queue. That was the first time we saw it as we usually try to get a FP for it but knowing we wanted to do Rope Drop that once we figured it was a good time to try for it

Oh, and during the show they brought out our dessert (another nice feature of getting dessert while watching).

As we docked I realized it took to long via ferry and there was no way we would get there in time to fully see the Welcome Show as it was already 7:44. So I did the best I could do and zoom in with my camera and see what I could see ... so I guess this technically counts as seeing part of the Welcome Show, right?

I've been foiled by Disney Transportation more than once in trying to see the Welcome Show and missing the first part of it. I like how they immerse you into the environment by making you park and use special transportation to get to the front of the park, but it isn't very efficient and I tend to curse it during those early morning hours when it just isn't moving fast enough!

I always find this to be a fun ride - just the simple fact that you are suspended for it makes it a unique dark ride and the black-lighting works really well. Now, not sure if it is worth the 90 minute waits it often gets, but still a fun ride!

Might be my favorite dark ride, but there's still not a dark ride I'm interested in waiting that long to ride.

Afterwards Emma was getting tired but Olivia and Peter wanted to ride again - or, more like, wanted to play in the queue some more - so Judi stayed with Emma while I went with them.

I appreciate what they've done with the new queues, but the kids wanting to go back just to play with something in a queue is definitely a downside.

After we were done, Emma had fallen asleep - so we figured it was a good time to use our rider swaps for 7 Dwarfs Mine Train and see if Peter would ride. Well, I guess he was telling the truth that it was because of it being dark the previous time that he didn't want to ride as he was totally up for it this time. I rode with him first and you can see he was a bit nervous but then Judi rode with him and he did better (and we got the front row both time)

Awesome! I'm glad that he enjoyed it!

Peter and Olivia then wanted to ride the Barnstormer so I took them both to do that ... unfortunately the CM at the entrance to the queue said each kid needed an adult to ride with them. Not sure why Olivia was able to ride by herself (with Peter and an adult in the seat in front) on Mine Train but not on the Barnstormer, but ok. So I had to take turns with them. Peter first, and then Olivia

Interesting. Trying to think back... is it maybe because the Mine Train is more enclosed. You sit down inside the car more and are really locked in where you can't get out if you wanted? Barnstormer looks like it would be easy for a little kid to wiggle out of the seat if they really wanted.

This is a cute ride and lots of bright colors - so while the most amazing ride technologically, we enjoy it (although I seem to have a habit of getting the picture of animatronics with their eyes half closed so they look kinda stoned)

I don't think I've ever seen pictures on that ride that don't turn out that way.

Whew, all caught up on lots of updates (sorry, I haven't been around a lot, but hoping to be responding more regularly now). I read so much that I don't even remember what to comment about (except - mmmm, yum, glad you liked the ice cream martini). Enjoying the updates, though. And, also, how awesome about taking two cruises next year! I am kinda jealous of the Italy one with DIS-friends - sounds pretty awesome!

We enjoyed both food items (I think I might have preferred the chocolate croissant actually). As for the LeFou's Brew ... it was ok. It was nice to try and something different but I think it was just too sweet for me - especially the foam on top.

I agree with you on all of those points. The roll is good, but it's a little rich for a morning snack; I tend to get the croissant and have just a bite of Alex's roll. And the LeFou's Brew is really, really sweet.

The theming and launch in the Paris Space Mountain is really cool, however the ride itself is incredibly jerky. It makes WDW's version seem smooth, which is saying something. I could only handle one turn on it, because it beat me up.

That was our thought about Spice Road Table and the view exactly ... was it a perfect view? Not but certainly acceptable and to get that view while sitting with dessert and wine - yeah, might be our new "go to" spot

Fully agree about the transportation to the front of MK - from a "show" perspective it is brilliant but can be frustrating when you are trying to get to something at a certain time ... and if that is what people have to do to get there they should be better about having the monorail running then. Oh well, not the end of the world

the wait times are frustrating at Peter Pan - and then it builds on itself as everyone knows it is popular so they plan for how they can get on it (i.e., "if there is a long line it must be good!") which only adds to the line. The new queue is pretty cool though so that would motivate me to wait a little longer for it - but not like over an hour like it normally gets

The only thing I can think of comparing the two rides is on Mine Train the lap bars are separate - so each rider has their own while on Barnstormer (and most others) there is one lap bar for the car - just wish it was a consistent rule

I am really glad Peter gave Mine Train a try as we knew he would like it and he was talking about it so much before the trip we just thought he would be upset with himself (and thus us) afterwards if he didn't ride it

I definitely think sharing a few things is the way to go at Gaston's Tavern - otherwise just too much sweetness!

We seem to have consistently good meets with Ariel (even interaction at character meals with her tends to be good) - I think because she gets to be a bit less serious than the other princesses (we find similar with Anna now as well)

Interesting to hear about Space Mountain at Paris. To date my favorite version is the one at Hong Kong Disney - but definitely would like to give the Paris one a try (plus, you know, Paris)

Quick life update!​

So, um, yeah - I swear I am still here - that month between updates went by fast though! I must apologize for the lack of updates. Work has really gotten in the way as I had some travel and I have accepted a new position so I am sort of doing 2 jobs now and on top of that planning all the logistics for a global off site for my current team (including the social events - so getting to show my colleagues from Europe and Asia what we do in America - and yes, a brewery will be involved).

I did manage to plan one other things though, which you may have noticed in my updated signature. I managed to convince Judi to let me go down for the DIS 20th party. This will be my first every solo trip and only going for 2 nights but will spend one day at the parks (going to Animal Kingdom on May 31st to explore Pandora which will newly opened - Judi isn't exactly happy with me about me getting to experience that with out her) and then the party at EPCOT on June 1st. Already have some plans set for DIS meets that I am very excited about - should be fun. Also staying at POP for the first time, so lots of "firsts" even in a short trip

If anyone else is going, hope we can connect!

Part 73: At Disney - Day 7: Magic Kingdom
Lunch with the Skippers​

We left off with Olivia and I having ridden Space Mountain, Judi having gone ahead to check in for our lunch ADR, and my convincing the CM at the line for Space Mountain to give me a rider swap for Judi so she could ride it later as it took longer than expected for Olivia and I to get through the FP line. So now Olivia and I had to catch up with the family - but where were we headed? Well, if the title of this post didn't give it away, perhaps this photo will give you a hint:

And if still not sure I think this next one should clarify things - as we were dining for the first time at the Skipper's Canteen!

When they first announced they were opening this place I was very excited as the Jungle Cruise is one of my absolute favorite rides (largely due to the Skipper's puns) and also was a huge fan of the Adventurer's Club which this was also to have references too. I also loved the different menu - and really just the idea of having different food options. I was a little worried when it was reportedly having low crowds and they were going to change the menu - I was fearful they would "dumb it down". (Not to sound like a food snob or anything - I mean, I love chicken nuggets as much as the next guy, I just don't think every single restaurant needs to have them) Fortunately they didn't change the menu too much and the reviews I was reading of the food was rather positive ... so excitement level was quite high for this meal.

Judi had already checked us in and was just waiting for us to get there and then for us to take us to our table. I liked how they had water available in the waiting area (I recall it being fruit infused water and the kids being fascinated by that - or maybe it was just the little cone shaped paper cups they had)

A lot of nice details in this restaurant - including the award to Alberta Falls and even they way they arrange the silverware on the table I thought was different and neat

Here are pictures of the menus - obviously a little different than the standard fair - but I think some of it just has different sounding names but in reality isn't that crazy ... though a few options are definitely for the more adventurous

It definitely is a place that makes you want some fun drinks so we ordered one each of the specialty drinks (obviously non-alcoholic being in the Magic Kingdom - at least at this time. They now have beer and wine here though I think some fun tropical drinks would fit better.) We had one of the Punch Line Punch (on the left) and one Schweitzer Slush (on the right), and Olivia got regular juice. Both drinks were pretty good - but I think sharing them was the best call as not sure I would need a full glass of either as they were a bit on the sweet side. Of the two I think I liked the Punch Line Punch better due to the spiced rim and the rest of the family preferred the Schweitzer Slush. Definitely fun to try both though!

They also brought the bread which is a Ambasha Bread served with a honey-infused mustard-style dip. We all liked the bread a lot - though I think I liked the dipping sauce more than the rest of the family

For food, there were a few of the appetizers that appealed to us (especially to me) so Judi and I decided to split a few things. I started with the Arepas and Judi got the Shiriki Noodle Salad. I really enjoyed the Arepas, the meat itself was really tasty and then it was great when you put it all together. My understanding is this is one thing that has changed on the menu as a lot of people I guess didn't realize you were supposed to combine it all together, so now on the menu they have the Orinoco Ida's Cachapas- which are similar but already put together and I have read very good reviews of it. Judi enjoyed the salad quite a bit and found it very refreshing and a good starter

One thing I was wondering about eating here was how the interaction with the Skipper's would be - I read some mixed things with a few great stories of fun interactions but also some where people were disappointed that it wasn't more. Well, for the most part things were fairly tame with our table but at a table near us, one of the absolute funniest things I have experienced at Walt Disney World happened. I young man was eating by himself and started chatting with his server. From what he said he had been there before but wanted to try a new item on the menu. Throughout the meal he was posting things and he talked to his server about how many 'likes' he was getting on Instagram so it seemed like he is "someone" online who reviews things often and has a bit of a following.

When the server initially asked him if he wanted some water he said "it's so hot out there I'd could use 2 glassed of water". Well, the server took this to heard and came back with at least 6 glasses of water for him. then a few minutes later another server came by saying "I heard you were thirsty, here's a glass of water" ... and then another ... and then another. Then someone saw him and that he might need some straws and dropped about 20 on his table. Then one dropped of some "river water" (which was some concoction made with blue powerade and 4 or 5 other things). Then another came by and said they were concerned about all the calories he was taking in with all the water so gave him a "diet water" - which was an empty glass. This picture is from part way through this but in the end he wound up with about 12 glasses of water. ... and there would be more fun with him later! (the kids obviously thought this was the greatest thing ever)

For their food Peter got the kids Smiley's Little "Croc" of Chicken Noodle Soup - which was some of the best chicken noodle soup I have ever tried and was a huge bowl. Olivia got the kids Sizzling Savanna Grilled Flank Steak which was a nice piece of meat, especially for a kids meal. Emma shared form everyone a little bit. Definitely a fan of the kids options here

Part 74: At Disney - Day 7: Magic Kingdom
Drawn to the Watering Hole​

I realize I haven't posted yet much of the inside of the restaurant and that is largely because I didn't get many great pictures of that - but here is about the best of what I have and also shows you roughly where we were seated in the main room:

For Judi and mine mains I actually got another appetizer which was the S.E.A. Shu Mai steamed dumplings. These were really good and I've read in some reviews they being referred to as the best appetizer at Walt Disney World. Not sure I would go that far, but really good and definitely recommend. Judi got the Sustainable Fish - which I forget what it was at this point, but she really enjoyed it and was another lighter dish and something different but not too out there. If you are looking for "out there" they did have a whole fried fish option which was a lion fish and looked really impressive when brought to the table (our friend with all the water glasses ordered that and was really impressed with it).

so as mentioned, there was more fun to be had. Some other servers came by with little sticks with signs for animals on them indicating they heard there was a new watering hole and they were drawn to it (the new watering hole, of course being the table with all the water glasses). This happened 3 or 4 times and he started giving the animal sticks to my kids. Emma was super excited - this is the best picture of her I could get as she couldn't stay still

The kids meals came with fruit dessert (which of course was cut into the shape of a Mickey head - gotta get Mickey in there somewhere) and I thought was a nice lighter option for the kids and they enjoyed it. For the table we also ordered a Kungaloosh! (I mean, I kinda had to given my love of the Adventurer's Club) which was "An African-inspired Chocolate Cake with Caramelized Bananas served with Cashew-Caramel Ice Cream topped with Coffee Dust" - this was really good - one of the better desserts I have had at Walt Disney World ... though the cake part was heavy/thick so definitely a good one to share.

Overall we loved our meal here - some really good and different options, good kids meals, and lots of fun with the servers (at least that we got to observe if not directly with our table). I will say it is a little pricey so not something we can do all the time but definitely something we will return to in the future.

After that we had a little time for our next FP+ which took us across the Hub and as we got there the new Castle show, "Mickey's Royal Friendship Faire" was just starting so we stopped to watch that. Overall we liked it a lot and appreciate some lesser used characters (especially Tianna and friends) being used. I wasn't as crazy about the story line as from the previous show which seemed to capture more of the Disney "feels" (I mean, hard to top Mickey saying "gosh Minnie, you'll always be a princess to me!"). On thins that was weird was towards the end they made an announcement that the show needed to end and apologized for that. They went through with the little firework burst so not really sure what got cut

Definitely give Skipper's Canteen a try. There are definitely a few more out there things but a lot of things aren't that crazy (just might look a little different or have a different name). Definitely has a similar vibe to the jungle cruise and then a lot of references to the Adventurer's Club/Society of Explorers and Adventurers (S.E.A.)

We definitely enjoyed the meal and it was a blast watching the scene with the waters as it was like every few minutes another CM would come up so it was something that went on for a while, not just a one time thing

I think Skipper's Canteen is doing better now - I think before when they tried it to be walk-ups only/not in the ADR system people didn't know about it or would have their day planned out already so that hurt attendance. Now that it is part of the ADR system it seems more popular - and is definitely something good for when you want something a little different (I do think the prices make it hard to do it all the time, at least for us)

He seemed quite happy by the end of his meal and seemed to have a blast with the whole thing!

That will be such a great time! Seriously I tried to make it work, even looked at hotels and flight change prices, lol. The EPCOT after hours event sounds like it'll be SO fun and of course the Pandora time will be awesome (I might have also priced out a quick AP trip mid-week for earlier in May, but didn't book that either). Congratulations!! Where is the offsite?

That will be such a great time! Seriously I tried to make it work, even looked at hotels and flight change prices, lol. The EPCOT after hours event sounds like it'll be SO fun and of course the Pandora time will be awesome (I might have also priced out a quick AP trip mid-week for earlier in May, but didn't book that either). Gotta wait until June 2nd, oh the horror!

well, it is really an "onsite offsite" as we are just having it in our offices (splitting between our headquarters in Westchester county NY and our Manhattan office). but should be some good things - going our for bar-b-que and then going bowling, to a steakhouse in NYC, and then the brewery

I don't know, by June 2nd all the fun might be sucked out of Pandora and it will be sooooooo last week

Glad the review of Skippers was helpful to you - I am really glad the menu is still a bit different from other locations in WDW, especially for MK

Never did figure out the blogger - pretty sure it was someone on instagram which I am not on so didn't have a chance to check it out really

The desserts were really good and the kids did enjoy the fruit (though also liked they got a bit of the other chocolate dessert as well)

Glad you enjoyed Skipper's Canteen. We had fun interactions with our server, but that was partly because Dug was throwing puns at him.

That must have been hilarious watching the whole water thing happening.

Hmmm, when we went there, the kids meals had a selection of dessert options and I made sure to order the very delicious chocolate-y one for Izzy and then proceed to eat most of it myself. (Just checked, here's the description: Volcano! - Gooey chocolate cake with caramel lava and exploding chocolate rocks) Mmmmm (and Izzy also enjoyed the few bites she got. )

Ah, that's great Dug was giving the puns - it's definitely a fun place with good and different food. The water scenario was really fun to watch especially because it wasn't just a one time joke, but played out over a bit of time

I think we could have gotten something else for the kids for dessert - though since what they both chose were one of the "Mickey Check" meals, the default dessert option was the fruit. But since a big chunk of it was watermelon and pineapple they were happy with it - and they did get some of our chocolate dessert.

I really want to try Skipper Canteen, but I nervous about the menu. I am not a big meat eater and their entree menu is heavy on the meat. Everything looks so good in the photos though. I think I might try it out and just go for a couple of the appetizers.
