$3,143.33 for Chinese food

I just went through this with a doctor's office copay - they charged $5000 instead of $50. I immediately alerted my credit union but the charge stayed in process for 4 days and caused lots of bounced things because they kept trying to submit it. My credit union reversed the overdraft charges but the doctor's office laughed it off saying it was a simple error.

They get checks from now on, no matter how busy it is,

Good luck.

My daughter had a similar experience...also with a Chinese Restaurant (Rang up a $6.00 bill as $600.00) Her debit card was also with a big bank.

Big bank waived some, but not all of the overdraft charges. ($30 per overdraft).

She was stuck paying $150 OOP.

We will not bank there anymore.

Chinese Restaurant was a chain in an airport. Called corporate office. Faxed them bank statements several times. Got nowhere.

We will not eat there anymore.
Did you see the incorrect amount rung up on your receipt?

If the receipt you got was correct (meaning that the amount withdrawn was bogus) or if the merchant (restaurant) refused to correct an error on the spot then it is worth opening a transaction dispute with the merchant regarding the quality or dissatisfaction with the goods/services received. The intent is to get the amount of the purchase charged back to the merchant as compensation for the mess the merchant caused.

This is why you do not use a ATM card for purchases.
Cash or Visa are the only "safe" ways to make purchases.

Amen! And why I don't have overdraft protection. Then they just refuse a check (no debit here) and don't use the overdraft as an excuse to pull money that they know is not there and charge you a fee each time.

This. I also had a situation like the OP, smaller though...thankfully! Aggravated me to no end all the fees they took out just to move my own money around. After it was resolved I took the time to opt out of the overdraft protection. They acted like opting out it was the dumbest thing ever. I don't get why anyone would want it? Maybe if there aren't any fees..or if you're that irresponsible about keeping money in your checking and have the money to throw away. Otherwise I don't really get it.

OP, glad it looks like things are working out. What a frustration though!

OP here... talked to the manager of my bank today; she attempted to get the $3k hold pulled off the account, but was not allowed because of the high dollar amount. I think it's a third party company that authorizes it. Thankfully, it is scheduled to expire at midnight tonight, so tomorrow it should be gone.

She is also going to reimburse me for the overdraft charges, which will be a total of $50-60 :thumbsup2

It was PNC Bank, btw.

Of all the "big" banks to deal with, PNC (IMO) is one of the more customer-friendly ones -- glad it worked-out for you...

If you get rid of overdraft protection and someone debited your account for too much, then real checks will bounce and you would ahve to deal with the persons or companies you wrote out those checks to.

whoops, looks like someone counted the Abacus the wrong way!! :lmao:

But, glad all went well in the end for you!!!:thumbsup2
