$3,000.00 for a prom dress?!?!?!?

I didn't pay that much for my wedding dress.

That mom is nuts. Wondering if her and Daddy Warbucks are paying 6 figures for her future wedding.

$300 max.

I recycled my prom dress. Had moved states and had a new high school senior year--so I reused a dress that I wore either to a homecoming or a sweet 16 ball. And it was on markdown clearance even.

OK, I graduated in 1988, and they were about $300-$800 then. I don't see how they could be up to 3K already.

Maybe it depends on your school. But, jinkies, 3K sounds off to me.

That's totally insane...but if someone can afford it, I guess they can spend that much on a dress that will be worn once for a few hours... used to be that just happened for weddings.

That is so absolutely ridiculous, and not the norm! I live on Long Island NY, and here things tend to be pretty expensive. I know a couple of mom's who recently purchased their daughters dresses in the city, and I know for a fact not one of these 4 mom's paid more than $400. So, I have no clue what that could be all about.

I paid $22 dollars for mine. The most expensive dress out of the group that I went in (which included about 14 girls) was around $350. This was only two years ago (I was class of '04)!!

This also made me think, if she's getting a $3000 prom dress, her life expectations can only go up from there. I mean, what will the wedding dress have to cost.

There is this whole culture now in America that makes no sense to me: it's all about the bigger and the best and the most expensive, just to have it, just to impress everyone else. But really, are we impressed?

I drove cars worth less than that when I went to high school. I mean, my mom wanted me to have nice things, but she also taught me the importance of earning my own money/buying my own stuff, and making do with what I had when some things were out of our reach, such as $3000 dresses (which I would have thought was just plain stupid anyway).

It sounds like that show sweet 16 were spoild rotten brats get parties that cost more then the average college educated person makes in a year. The thing is with all the advantages these kids get, they have no common sense and no real support or gudiance. It is very sad. Money can't buy everything.

Back in 1989 I ended up wearing the dress from my brothers wedding (I loved it but had it fixed up some.) It cost $100. For college formals that was around $75 to 150 (but we were broke college students so we got them on clearance and passed around old prom dresses! We just liked dressing up.)

My 1st car cost 2,500 back in 1990 (it was 6 old VW jetta and I drove it for the next 6 years.)

I think the norm is somewhere between 75 (on clearnce) to 300 (high priced.)

My family can go to WDW twice for 3,000. :teeth:

I grew up on Long Island where things tend to be more expensive than most places. We have this dress place called "Estelle's Dressy Dresses" and I paid $70 for my dress. I do believe I was the prettiest girl at the prom. :teeth:

Yikes!! We would have had to take a second mortgage on the house to pay $3000 for a prom dress for our daughter. Absolutely nuts!!

$3000 if your last name is Trump! Geez.....then what do they do for wedding dresses? :sad2:

Ahh....poop, I just posted under my DS's screen name! Sorry ~ this was "Mishetta."

My DS' DGF is graduating from college and they have this senior ball that they will be attending. DGF just bought the most beautiful dress from David's Bridal for $165.00! It is OUTSTANDING. She was looking at one that was $120.00 and then saw this one....but $3,000.00 NO WAY :sad2: !!!! WOW!!! Kinda crazy :crazy2: to spend that on one dress for one event.

Now ME: I got married in 1980. I went to this REALLY REALLY SNOOTY :snooty: bridal shop in our area that EVERYONE went to....I walked in with my mom and asked if they had any wedding dresses "ON SALE"....I was IMMEDIATELY told.."we do not have SALES here, but we do have a DISCONTINUED line in the basement"....at which I said "Ma'am, show me to the BASEMENT!" I then picked out a dress and that was that and paid $125.00 for my wedding dress 25 years ago!!!! :thumbsup2

I will pay for nearly anything for my kids. I really will. Some things if I told you all on here you would go tsk tsk. But 3 grand for a prom dress is really pushing it. I think if I did that and my husband every found out I would not have a credit or debit card or checkbook to my name.

My DD spent just under 500.00 on shoes , purse and a dress for her Prom 3 years ago . I thought my MIL was crzy spending that on it for her .

My prom was just 2 years ago and 3000 was definately NOT the norm. My parents were nice enough to buy my dress for me. We found a gorgeous dress at David's Bridal for just under 200. And we thought that was a lot of money! I can't imagine paying that much for a prom dress.

No of course that's not too much for a prom dress. My mom spent between 300-400 on my prom dress, and I thought that was a lot! She normally wouldn't spend that much on a dress, but it was prom, and she was just happy that I was actually going!

BTW, has anyone here ever seen the show My Super Sweet 16 on MTV? That show annoys the crap out of me. All of the girls are spoiled little brats who always talk back to their parents. Most of them usually spend thousands on their dresses.

Wow, I would say that is not the norm, at least not for us. My DD went to the prom as a junior and a senior. When she was a junior she borrowed a dress from a friend and as a senior she bought a new dress at JC Penney's, but it cost under $100 and looked beautiful on her. It's not the best quality, but it's a prom dress, for crying out loud!

I know a lot of her friends paid a lot more for dresses, but I don't know that anyone paid more than $500. My DD was shocked that someone would pay more than a couple hundred dollars, and that's coming from someone who's a bit of a prima donna (her, not me :p ). :teeth:

That is NOT the norm. That is the extreme. I think from the responses here, you get a good idea of what prom dresses go for. You can get one off the rack at Filenes for $75-$250, and at a formal shop for under $400. If the woman paid $3000, you can bet it was a designer dress, and if she thinks that's the norm, she runs in a much different crowd than most of us.

3000.00 :rotfl2: :rotfl: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

That is absurd! My daughter graduated from high school 3 years ago and I think I spent about 120.00 on her dress, she wore shoes she already had, she had her hair done (up do) and I bought her some cheap costume jewelery. She looked fantastic (and was Valedictorian)

My youngest graduated from grade 8 last year, she wore a grad dress that her cousin wore 2 years before plus the shoes. I had her hair done and she also looked fantastic!

I think spending 3000.00 is for someone that needs their head read, literally!
