Yes you read correctly three thousand dollars for the dress!! The mom said this was the norm. Am I that much out of the loop??

Ummm, in Beverly Hills 90120, maybe.

I bought a designer WEDDING GOWN from a top designer and paid 1/3 of that.

No, that's not normal.

HUH??!!! The norm??!!! I don't think so - that's crazy, ridiculous, and silly to spend that much on a prom dress...just my opinion...

I didn't go to prom, but most of my friends spent a couple hundred on their dresses.

I just wore a cocktail dress to my senior prom actually (still cost a few hundred). Some teachers gave me dirty looks, but what's the fun in wearing an enormous dress that costs thousands of dollars when you're just going to be draggin it around half the night? It wasn't "trampy" at all, and I received a lot of compliments for it. Besides, late May in New Jersey has hot temperatures (low 80s at during the night).

Well, if you're out of the loop, so am I.

Prom dresses run from $120-$350 here in Colorado. Of course, you can always find them for more/less.

We got DD's on clearance for $19.99, and it was EXACTLY the color and style that she wanted. I'm still dancing over our good fortune at finding it!

No, in MN maybe $200-300 tops and that's probably in Edina!

Seems like more and more teens are going to consignment shops for their dresses. Get one for under $75 usually.

herc.

We just bought my daughers prom dress last weekend for $120. That is the norm here. There were some shops that had dresses for $300 - $400 but that was as high as I saw. Where would you even buy such a dress?

OMG... that's insane!!!! I spent $800 for my wedding dress :sad2:

I think it depends on where you go. I have been out with DW looking for a dress for a benefit, and, most of the dresses were between 500 and 1500. Some of the designer stores were 2 and higher. The places like dillards were 250 - 500. Neimans and Saks were 1000 +. Some of the smaller stores, cache, luca luca, etc. were on the higher end.

I know its not prom dress, but, to me, a formal dress is a formal dress. Of course, i would buy the one that fits first. That's not the case in my family though. We have to go "sample".

OMG :scared:

I'm glad to see some lower numbers! My DD is only 10, so I have a little time to start saving!!!

NOOOOO, no no no.

My dress was about $200, and that was kinda expensive, I thought. General range is $100-300. Obviously, you could find a great deal, or go overboard, but my wedding gown was only $1000!!! And THAT is expensive, IMO!!! Granted, it was my dream dress, but I still had severe sticker shock about spending a grand on a dress that I'd only wear once! (On the plus side, I never looked prettier in my life! But it was my wedding day, not PROM!).

As my MIL would say, that mom has more money than sense! :)

For my prom way back when..... I saw a dream dress at a bridal shop that was a little over $300 before any alterations. However, I kept looking and found one that I loved that was under $100. (which gave me extra to spend on nice undergarments, a good crinoline, and other accessories)
I paid for my own dress so costs were high on the list of importance.

I will admit that I spent $99 on my DD 1st communion dress. It was very nice though and she got many compliments. (We were in a rural area at the time with not much selection but if I had to do the same thing over again today I could find something much cheaper now that the internet has so much more to offer than even 6 yrs ago.)

When it does come time for the prom, I will go shopping with my DD and pay for her dress. However, I have instilled modest fashion morals in her. Names aren't important, a nice look and good material, good fit is. She'd take one look at a $3,000 price tag and go "Mom, You could buy my whole class dresses for that much." :rotfl:

:rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

Wonder what kind of TV that Princess has in her room?

Back in 1988, I paid just a little over $100 for my prom dress! It was to the floor, but I wore 2 inch heels to bring it up a bit. ;) $3000 the norm.....yea for the Queen of England maybe. :lmao: :lmao:

This also made me think, if she's getting a $3000 prom dress, her life expectations can only go up from there. I mean, what will the wedding dress have to cost.

There is this whole culture now in America that makes no sense to me: it's all about the bigger and the best and the most expensive, just to have it, just to impress everyone else. But really, are we impressed?

I drove cars worth less than that when I went to high school. I mean, my mom wanted me to have nice things, but she also taught me the importance of earning my own money/buying my own stuff, and making do with what I had when some things were out of our reach, such as $3000 dresses (which I would have thought was just plain stupid anyway).

My wedding dress cost $400.

There is no way in God's green earth that my mother ever would have entertained the idea of paying $3000 for a prom dress. Never.

$3000 for a prom dress. No way. My daughter has bought serveral formal dresses as she is a muiscian and needed them for solo performances. Not one was over $300 and several were less than $100 and these were nice quality dresses. And they are still being used 5 years later.
