2nd Bun

I'm on vacation this week. I normally don't have this much time to spend on the computer, so I'm full of questions today.

Here's another question (I'm fairly new here so if this has been addressed in a previous post, sorry. :)

For those of you who have ordered a 2nd bun when purchasing a double burger at a counter service restaurant, do you feel awkward doing it?

When I first read about it many months ago on another list I thought "Wow, can you do that? Why would Disney sell a plain bun? Don't they know that people are making 2 burgers from one double?"

I believe that everyone ultimately needs to make their own decisions about what is "right" so I'm not saying it's right or wrong. I just think that I'd feel stupid doing it. We often order a double burger and cut it in 1/2, which works well for us, but you could sure pile on more yummy lettuce and tomato when you have a WHOLE bun.

When we went I would order a "grilled cheese" AKA cheeseburger no meat. Not sure if this is the same as you are asking but it was no problem. It was a couple bucks cheaper then a cheeseburger, which I didn't expect but was great.

We have ordered extra buns at WDW and US and no one even bats an eye. It must be fairly common or they wouldn't do it.

I will bet a dollar that if you talk to a CM, ordering an extra bun is the LEAST weird thing they hear on a daily basis. :)

Hi & welcome to the DIS! :wave2:

You do pay for the extra bun, it's not free. I believe the cost is $1.00. So, since they already have the cost of that bun factored in, I'd say Disney has no problem with anyone using the extra patty to make another 'burger. My guess is, if they cared, you wouldn't even be able to order (and pay) for that extra bun.

I also had wondered if I'd feel comfortable ordering an extra bun - but we did it when we were there at the beginning of the month and didn't feel funny and the girl didn't bat an eye at all. We also ordered glasses of ice water - and no one ever gave us a funny look. Now, I imagine it would be a different story at a sit-down restaurant - but at counter service, I don't think the people taking orders care at all. The double cheeseburger was HALF A POUND - way too much for one to eat, so I didn't feel paying a little extra for another bun was unusual.

I didn't even know that you could do this, I will certainly order an extra bun not to split a burger but just because youngest son won't eat the burger, so we normally just order him fries (or chips as they are called here in UK) but he would love the bun and fries and then he can make a 'chip buttie'- which is one of his favourites basically its a 'fries sandwich'!!!

I read your other post about sharing meals with another family who has the MYW dining package and you do not. To be honest I would be more embarrassed to do this than to ask for and pay $1.00 for an extra bun.

doesn't bother me in the least. I order the bacon double cheeseburger at Peco's Bills with an extra bun every trip. My older DS eats the bacon cheeseburger, and I have the hamburger. There's enough fries for us to share :)

Isn't it funny how everyone has different things that they would feel awkward about? I don't mean that in a sarcastic way, but merely as a sincere observation. :) On the MYW dining post I was more thinking that if 4 people ordered 2 meals and and 2 extra side dishes that would be perfectly normal (people split meals all of the time) so it wouldn't make me feel uncomfortable. It would be very much like the post about the family that ran into friends and everyone ordered what they wanted & then they just took the MYW items off the bill.

Somehow, ordering a 2nd bun just seems different because if you want one and can eat a whole burger, ordering a whole burger is an option on the menu, but in a sit down restaurant when the portions are huge and predetermined it seems like splitting an appetizer, entree and dessert is something more "normal". Thanks for taking the time to comment. :wave2:

I wouldn't feel funny about it because my DD 21 mos would love to have just a bun. The hamburger would be hit or miss. Sometimes she would eat it sometimes she won't. That would save me lots of money and if she wanted some hamburger I would have plenty to share. Depending on how hungry she is, it is a waste to spend $4-$5 on a kids meal.

As long as you are paying for the item, IMO there is NOTHING to feel funny about. There is nothing wrong with it. Sharing meals is a common practice. I do it all the time with my DD, who eat two bites and claims to be full. What's the difference between buying that double burger and cutting it in half to share, then to buy a second bun and split it that way?

Being a vegetarian I have learned to just ask for what I want. I order cheesebuns, I ask that items be made specially without the meat. The worst thing that can happen is that they say no, then in the end they are the ones that are going to loose, because then I walk out. Disney is very accomidating. If it is on the menu, in one way or another they will give it to you.

Thanks everyone for your input! Okay, I'm thinking that I'm going to take the plunge an order an extra bun on our next trip! I'm dreaming of the topping bars!!!! And speaking of topping bars...does anyone know what fry sauce is? I make it when I in the World. I also love to dip my fries in the honey mustard sauce for the chicken strips! Suz

Suz D, I didnt mean for my comment to sound harsh in anyway. I agree with you, how different things feel awkward for others. I would have no problem asking for a bun and paying a $1 whereas I couldnt possibly ask a friend to split their meal ordered from the MYW even though I was offering to pay. I would pay any amount for my dinner before I would ask a friend that or a relative.

We did the package with dining last July...We had sit down dinners twice each day. It was too much food to eat in 1 day so I agree with you on the portions being large. If a friend offered like spur of the moment, then I would more than likely take them up on the offer, but I could never ask to share.

Another one who has ordered just a bun. My ds went through a stage when he was younger when he wouldn't eat any meat. We had no problem at any of the WDW locations and were typically charged for 'toast'.

I never thought of turning a double into two singles.

what's really great is when you order the extra bun and don't ask for the fries.
gotta remember that the meals that you see above the register are just that, meals. and you can just order the sandwich if you want. save yourself the 2 bucks. c'mon 2 bucks for 20 fries. i'd rather get a mickey bar. :)

You can order a cheeseburger with no meat???? This would be great for my dd who is ultra picky. At the places with only chicken nuggets or hot dogs on the kids meals, she only eats fries. She might like the cheese and bun!

We've never been charged $1 for an extra bun. We often ordered extra buns last December and last June. A few times they didn't charge us, and other times we were charged a very small amount, I can't remember exactly but maybe $0.25 or so.

Southern4sure, I didn't think that you sounded harsh at all!! That was why I wrote that I was not being sarcastic but meant it sincerely about how strange it is that something that one person would feel awkward doing, another person wouldn't even think twice about doing and vice versa. I'm always amazed when my Dad does something that I would NEVER do and he sees nothing wrong with it, but I might do something and he says "WHAT WERE YOU THINKING??".

Please don't think another thing about it. I wasn't bothered at all, and appreciated your input. That's the nice thing about this board. I think when you ask for an opinion (especially on something controversial) you need to be open to what everyone thinks. Otherwise, why ask?? I also appreciate your thoughtfulness and consideration for another person's feelings by posting the above quote. :goodvibes

Okay, I just had to add a post to this thread. I'm back home now, and went to Wendy's tonight for dinner. There was a family sitting behind my daughter and I just happened to glance over and the son (10-12-ish) was eating just a bun with cheese, and reaching for his mom's bun with just the cheese as well. I just had to laugh  it was such a coincidence. (He also had a full sized burger and 3 chicken strips!--EEEEK! :earseek: I'm glad I have a tiny girl who won't break the bank for a dinner out!!). Thanks again to all who posted. Suz
