I got a Canon 24mm f/1.4 a week or two ago. I put it to real use for the first time this weekend. A friend was hosting a party at her house. I thought it would be fun to shoot a lot of it with the new lens. I used it, an 85 f/1.2, a 135 f/2, and a 24-70 f/2.8. I thought about showing up with only the primes, but I got cold feet and brought along the zoom just in case. My totals of keepers by lens for the night were:
24mm (88)
85mm (52)
135mm (52)
24mm-70mm (22)
I used a lot of ambient light and some flash (generally ceiling bounced with a 1/2 CTO to match the lights).
I really enjoyed the new lens. Wide and fast is a new combination for me. Before this, my fastest wide lens was my 24-70mm f/2.8. At 24mm, f/2.8 doesn't give you that much control over DOF. This was a different animal.
Here are a few sample images:
I have to admit that I'm still a lot more comfortable shooting tele rather than wide. I enjoyed using the 24mm, but it was much more work compared with the 135mm or the 85mm. It is much easier isolating your subject with the longer lenses and I like the look better. The thing that they don't do is give you any sense of context. The picture could have been taken anywhere. With the 24mm, I could get a portrait but still give a sense of the setting.
