24" mountain Bike for child.

We are looking for a 24" wheel mountain bike. I was wondering if anyone had recomendations? Or nice budget finds? It is for a boy.

We got our DS's at Walmart last year. It was right around $100. I didn't want to spend a fortune because he is still growing and at 13 figured he would want something different when he got into High school. It has been fine. He rode it for Boy Scouts in earning his bicycling badge and that was a lot of miles! Including a 50 mile ride. all together it adds up to 150 miles. He also rides it around the neighborhood and to school, the mall etc.

We had a really hard time finding smaller bikes for our kids that had gears, which was important for my son. They were more than I wanted to spend, about $250, but when they outgrow them you can trade them in for 100 off a new bike at the bike shop. Three years later we need to trade them in for larger bikes. Even though they are mountain bikes, I don't think they left the pavement often.
You could check at a bike shop and maybe get a nice used one.

They aren't truly budget but it's a "you get what you pay for" issue, I would buy from Performance Bicycle. They have a good re-purchase program that grows with the kids. My son's 16" came from here and it's holding up super well after 3 years. Other friends of ours have cheaper bikes and they just aren't holding up after less time on the road.

We always go to the bike store for bikes. We buy new for the ones we keep here (and they make wonderful hand-me-down - really hold up), and used ones from the bike store for the grandparents home.
