....................................

DS came home from school last Friday and immediately vomited and went to bed. He slept until Saturday morning. He was in bed with a sore throat, cough and fever. By Sunday he was worse. I knew he needed a Doctors note for school so I sent him to the immediate med center. I assumed he had the flu, but it turned out he had mono! We were all surprised.

I heard somebody on TV also has mono, so he isn't the only one.

If she's not coughing, it could very well be strep. My ds complained of a sore throat on Wednesday morning, no fever, went to the nurse, no fever so sent back to class, woke up Thursday with a sore throat, no fever, took him in, and it's strep.

I don't know who you are venting about?

"The H1N1 Vaccine Fairy"..

Strep would probably be a better case scenario - although I've never had it so I don't know how miserable it makes one feel.. :confused3

It's the best diagnosis ever, because after 2 doses of antibiotics, the symptoms (especially the bad sore throat) usually vanish, and they're no longer contagious! :cool1: Even the pediatrician said it was her favorite, too.

Really? Only 2 doses? That would be great! :thumbsup2

Strep can be pretty bad, recurring, and also fatal to people with weakened immune systems - but any virus or bacterial infection can be fatal if your body is unable to fight it off.

Now that winter is on its way, even if you get the H1N1 vaccine, and the seasonal flu vaccine, there's no guarantee that you won't get a rogue variation of either flu, or a new flu we don't even know about yet. I'm little miss sunshine, aren't I !

Best bet for the winter months if you have a compromised immune system - stay as isolated as you can. Get enough sleep, get plenty of fresh air, eat well. Stay away from large public places as much as possible. Do bulk shopping so you can go longer without having to go back to the store. That's what my neighbor with cystic fibrosis does.

Yep, after 24 hours on antibiotics, you are not contagious. But you MUST finish the whole prescription!!!! I would rather have strep throat(bacterial), than a viral sore throat. You can treat and get rid of strep, viral you just have to wait it out. It's a pain in the ****!

Hope your DGD feels better soon!!!

And take your vitamins, especially Vit. C.

strep is also going around here...any chance its that? my kids always get stomach aches when they get strep. the jello legs/arms not so much, but the rest might be....just something to think about.

hope she is better soon!

eta I just read a couple of pp said strep, too. and a friend of mine has mono right now...she has been exhausted. lots more going on right now than h1n1

The best advice I was ever given was "don't worry until it's time to start worrying". Worrying about the "what-ifs" only seeks to wind you up.

I have to write that down and carry it with me at all times. I am a HUGE "what'if-er." It takes all of my energy.

:grouphug:C.Ann, praying for an uneventful illness for your dgd, and for the rest of your family to stay healthy.

Just my 2 cents.....DH5 had the same symptoms so we ran him in to the Dr's and it was strep, not the flu. He was happy to hear that for the next 48 hours he can have as many popsickles as he wants while the antibiotic does its job.

We, too, are extra cautious and on edge with this h1N1 and lack of vaccine. We just cant seem to get adequate supplies to innoculate the masses. Our schools cancelled their clinics, and the local pharmacies wont administer vaccine to those under 14 for liability issues....so frustrating! So, OP, I feel your pain and worry and hope DGD is healthy in no time!

Why oh why did I think this could be something not swine flu related?:faint::faint::faint:

At our back to school convocation my Superintendent told all of the staff that the H1N1 and regular flu shots would be available to not only us, but also to all students, with parental permission of course. By the end of September we were notified that because of problems obtaining the mist/shots they would not be available to us. The township is now doing a walk up type thing, but it's first come first serve and they have warned that their supplies are limited. Last year I was able to get the flu shot right in my building.

Wouldn't it be great if it isn't? :thumbsup2 From what I'm reading here, it could be strep - which sounds like it's easily taken care of (although miserable for the person who has it).. I'd much prefer that! :goodvibes

It's likely the flu. For the overwhelmingly vast majority of people who get it, it's no big deal.

My kids both had what was likely H1N1. They ran a moderate fever and were better in two days. I have one child who is the Goddess of Strep. She gets it several times a year. Give me the H1N1 any day of the week.

C.Ann-- It could be either. If it's strep though she'll need an antibiotic to get rid of it. The thing w/ strep is it usually does not produce other cold type symptoms. It would be a fever, body aches, chills, very sore throat, possible stomach upset. W/ the flu you are likely to have those but tend to develop a cough and congestion as well.

I am at 1 week today w/ what is presumed H1N1. Last Fri-Sunday I could not move-- I was very sick. Starting Monday I'd do little things around the house (I didn't have a fever after early Sunday) but I'd run down really, really quickly. Yesterday I last a little longer. Today was different, I took no nap today and actually ventured out of the house. I did take Tamiflu (I have asthma) within less than 24 hrs of the symptoms starting.

My husband started w/ it the following night after me, and fingers crossed my son has not seemed to catch it. Ironically he was immunized the same day I came down w/ it. I'm hoping now that we are 1 full week out, that he escaped getting it from us and his immunization will be fully effective in another week. So, my fingers are crossed he will escape this virus altogether.

Remember most people recover rather quickly (within a week) and have no complications. I have a friend who's daughter now is day 3 w/ pneumonia secondary to H1N1 and she's back home after a trip to the hospital and doing well. So, even a lot of the people who develop a secondary infection do well.

I also agree with the PP who are saying it sounds like strep. I went to the doctor on Wednesday morning with a sore throat, fever, headache, upset stomach, and a feeling of general malaise. I was given antibiotics and a steroid shot.

When I get strep, which is about twice a year, it gets really bad really quickly. Some people are just more susceptible to getting it. I always have to get the steroid shot to keep the inflammation down, otherwise my joints start to hurt, and it makes it difficult to move. (And I'm only in my 30s.)

Today is the first day I haven't had a high fever, and I'm feeling much better than I did a few days ago. Hope your DGD is feeling better soon, too!

My DD13 was sick with the flu for almost exactly a full week, the week before last. She was REALLYREALLY sick for about 3 days (which I never want to experience again) but the whole thing lasted just about a week.

On the "up-side", DH, DMom, DDad and myself (who all live in the same house with her) have not gotten sick at all. Of course we've been disinfecting and washing our hands CONSTANTLY... hopefully we won't get it. :thumbsup2

last sunday early evening dd ended up in tears because she complained that her body felt like it had been hit by a bus, within a couple of hours she was running a fever and complained of ear and throat paid. we called the doctor on call who said it sounded like swine flu and to keep an eye out for problems breathng or abdominal pain, and to call her regular doctor in the morning.

by morning dd said her chest hurt so they ended up having her come in. the first thing they did was run blood work and a strep culture to rule out any other possible issues, but she was diagnosed with swine.

the doctor advised to have her stay home from school the entire week-and up until today she has felt lousy (achey, VERY tired, fever on and off). doctor said she was most communicable a couple of days prior to coming down with symptoms so to help halt the spread we went ahead and kept ds home-figured if he was coming down with it we'd see it by tuesday or wednesday. sure enough by tuesday evening he had a fever and was complaining of aches. he pretty much power slept tuesday-this morning.
