i think, and i could be very wrong, but i think that once someone starts to show flu symptoms, they have already been contageous for a little while. so her parents have probably already been exposed for awhile. :confused3

OK you're not going to like me for this - which is a shame since I like your posts - but here we go.

It's the flu.

Most people get the flu 1 or 2 times during their lifetime.
The vast, VAST majority of people come out without even a tiny medical complication.

I appreciate that you want to go be with your family. That said, it's the flu. There are a thousand strains and even if a vaccine could protect you against one, it doesn't mean it will protect you against others.

I think with this, you just need to roll with the punches. They have a vaccine against this and they're rolling it out as fast as they can (no one but medical staff and the very elderly have even been NOTIFIED of a vaccination here). They are doing their best: but if it weren't H1N1 it would be another flu, or a bad cold virus, or a throat infection, or a stomach virus etc.

People get sick. I'm sorry you can't be with your daughter and her family. I hope your granddaughter gets better soon. You need to wait this one out and be thankful you have family you are so close to (and indeed that you are capable of living independently for the warmer months of the year).

:grouphug:

I believe after you get the shot, it takes about 2 weeks to really kick in. Good luck to you family.

She was fine when she went to school - looking forward to today as it was going to be a "fun" day with all kinds of activities this afternoon - including making ice cream..

She was in her literature class when the teacher noticed that she looked extremely pale.. Teacher asked her if she was okay - she said no - and asked to go to the nurses office.. No temp at that time, but she said she felt sick to her stomach, had a sore throat, and her arms and legs felt like "jello".. They called my DD and she picked her up..

Within a half-hour of being home she had a temp of 101 and fell right to sleep for 2 hours.. When she woke up she was complaining that her throat hurt, she was getting a headache, and it hurt to bend her arms and legs..

DD was going to call the doctor to find out what she should do (if anything other than the routine stuff) considering today is Friday.. She hasn't called me back yet, so I don't know what he said..

Yes - I'm worried.. DD and her DH are worried.. But I guess all we can do now is hope that it's "something else" - or if it's the flu, she ends up with a mild case..

Whether it's the flu or not, it's very upsetting that the ball has been dropped in terms of getting children vaccinated when they need to be in a school setting every day.. The school had a clinic set up, but it fell through because they still haven't received the vaccines.. Some pediatricians offices have it, but still aren't giving it to all of the children - only those with prior respiratory issues and such - because there just isn't enough to go around yet..

If it is the flu, within what time frame would my DD and her DH get it - if in fact they come down with it themselves?

I was planning on moving back to their place the weekend of the 21st - but even if I get my shot on Tuesday, I won't be protected yet - right?

Vent over..:headache:

I can only speak for our situation. My 2 DD's had flu like symptoms (pretty much what you described) and here is how it went down

DD8 felt "yucky" on a Friday so I kept her home, no fever, no symptoms just very tired and "yucky"......all day seemed okay, Friday night I kept her home from Girl Scouts just to be safe although she said she was feeling fine, the next morning fever of 103 and was consistently 102 - 103 for 6 days, she missed that Friday, and the entire following week....was better by the NEXT Saturday.

DD6 felt fine all week and exactly 1 week from the Friday DD8 felt yucky, she went to school feeling fine and I got a call that she had vomited as soon as she walked in the door. She came home and had a fever of 103, stayed 102-103 for only 3 days and she returned to school on that Monday along with DD8.

I got sick that Tuesday and missed Tuesday and Wednesday from work, went back on a Thursday - didn't feel 100% for almost a week and a half though.

I hope your DD doesn't get sick at all, it was really awful!

It sounds like the flu to me. Can you stay away for a little while longer? Yes, it takes 2 weeks for a flu shot to begin to work. Are you getting both seasonal and H1N1 shots?

My daughters Dr said they are contagious a day or two before they break out in symptoms. My daughter was fine going to school in the morning...by noon they called me saying she had a fever and was sick. It was the same way for me- I woke up with a slight cough, nothing more.....I went to work and by noon I was a shivering sweating mess on the train going home! The flu hits fast- not a gradual thing leading up to it...all of a sudden you feel like crap!

I hope she feels better soon. It sounds like the flu or even strep throat. My dd had swine flu in June and she was feeling a lot better in a couple of days. I think I had it before her but noone else(2 sibs and DH) got it. It is rampant everywhere it seems. I would say about 10 of my facebook friends are dealing with flu in their house right now and they are all in different parts of the country.. I know you have underlying medical conditions and are worried-I hope you are able to dodge this flu.

Sorry she is sick but the flu vaccine is no guarantee that you won't get the flu. I know a few kids this year that have had the vaccine that did get the flu anyway.
I hope she feels better soon.

I know kids here who have had it for 5 days and some that had it for 2 weeks. Depends I guess.

My doc said my kids would be fully protected against H1N1 with in 2 weeks of when they got the shot. We are at 3 weeks now and they are doing well! My DS2 has asthma so both my kids got the shot.
Is there somewhere you can stay for a little while if you need to? It is getting cold here (PA) not sure how you are doing in NY!
Hang in there and I will say some prayers for you and your DGD!

One of the most frustrating aspects of this is that a lot of the delays in getting vaccines out have been uncooperative viruses. Apparently, the cultures from which the vaccines are derived have been growing at a much slower rate than they should.

I guess we should have been paying them better. :)

Not to worry - I have no problem with your post..:goodvibes

I just don't happen to agree with your statement "It's the flu" - as though it were a typical flu.. I think there is much more to worry about this year - for the target age group as well as people such as myself who are at high risk - but everyone is certainly entitled to have their own opinion.. It would be pretty boring around here if we all agreed on everything.. LOL..:thumbsup2

Here, there's little fuss about it. Most strains of actual influenza carry a risk for those with health issues, the elderly or the very young. The vast majority of people recover from H1N1 as well as they do the regular 'flu. We have barely heard of the H1N1 vaccine here - they are calling very few people for it (mainly healthcare staff and the very elderly) and many are opting out.

I do genuinely hope that your granddaughter, yourself and your family are okay. It is clear from your posts that you are all very close as a family. I posted simply because I don't think worrying will get you anywhere - you have to ride the storm with this one; hope you don't get it (or any other diseases this winter) and hope that if you do, that your body has the ability to fight off these diseases before they become serious.

Thank you..:)

And you're right - worrying certainly won't help - so I'm going to do my best to "keep it at bay"..:upsidedow

The best advice I was ever given was "don't worry until it's time to start worrying". Worrying about the "what-ifs" only seeks to wind you up. Enjoy the extra time up at the lake! :flower3:

Or - "worrying has never added an hour to anyones life"..;) That's the way the Amish feel about "worrying"..:thumbsup2

At this point, all I can say is take some comfort in the fact that complications are relatively low, but tell your family not to hesitate seeking medical care if things worsen at any time.

If you're like the vast majority of us, you'll never know if it's H1N1 or not, so time may not tell. The good part about that however is, those not diagnosed probably come thru the virus unscathed in the end.

Sometimes all we can do it pray and leave it in God's hands. It seems that's about where you're at right now. I wish you and your family the best.

If she's not coughing, it could very well be strep. My ds complained of a sore throat on Wednesday morning, no fever, went to the nurse, no fever so sent back to class, woke up Thursday with a sore throat, no fever, took him in, and it's strep.

I don't know who you are venting about? Our state has only received 1/2 of what it ordered, because they just couldn't get enough made. No one here has been vaccinated yet, although lots of flu going around. My 6 year olds have viral/allergy induced asthma, so I'm worried, but I don't think there is anyone to blame.
