My dd will be turning 21 in a few months and I'd like to give her a special birthday party since it's likely to be the last one thrown by mom and dad. I'm sure she'll have another celebration of some sort with just friends and all that which makes my decisions on what kind of party to have ourselves harder. I can't decide whether I should go for an all-friends party and some kind of sophisicated theme or invite family and friends (meaning kids will be there).

Ashli is the oldest grandchild on my side of the family and she is like the pied piper at all family gatherings, all of her younger cousins adore her and wherever she is you can bet there will be 1/2 dozen cousins sitting on her lap, hanging off her arms, standing around talking to her, ect. I know these kids would love to come to a party for her but it would definitely change the tone of the party, if they are invited Ashli wouldn't be able to interact with friends as much.

What would you guys choose? I'd just ask Ashli myself but I haven't decided yet whether to make this a surprise party or not.

If you think she and her friends will do something later on, than I would just make this a family party.

Would she be into a movie star/ celebrity themed masquerade (or not) party? Roll out a red carpet with strob lights to mimic photogs. Send movie ticket invitations. Dress as your favorite celebrity. You could get 3 or 4 options together so she could "change into" her favorite celeb when she arrives.

If you have access to a projector or two. Project a couple of different movies on the walls. Bowls and bowls of popcorn. A buffet of snacks or a meal. Chocolate fountian with cookies, rice krispie treats, marshmallows.

Then:
What about an open house type gathering for the family? A prepared cake, coffee, etc. Just time together for the family.

Whatever you decide, have fun!

I would have a family party and a separate small party for her close friends.

Maybe she could invite around five of her closest friends and you could throw a dinner party for them. They might get a kick out of getting dressed up and having you cook something (or order in) something fancy.

I don't know how you feel about drinking, or if her friends are over 21, but you could also buy one or two bottles of nice wine or champagne for them to share/have with their dinner. It would be a nice introduction into how to drink like a responsible adult.

What about a Vegas theme? have some poker tables set up, maybe a little toy slot machine.

ill be 21 in october..my family is taking me out to dinner at whereever i want to go, and ill probably bring 5 0r 6 friends with us..we always have fun doing that
