We arrived at Wilderness Lodge a little early for our reservation, but checked in anyway at Artist Point and surprisingly we were seated immediately.
As an aside I really like the look of Wilderness Lodge and would really like to stay there someday, DH however isn't impressed with it for some reason, but we both like Artist Point.
I think this is a really pretty restaurant, the tables are nicely spaced so you don't feel you're sitting in your neighbours lap, and it's always been pretty quiet when we've been there.
Our waiter was very good, friendly, chatty and his timing was very good, with the whole meal being well paced. I skipped the cocktails tonight and we shared a bottle of Pinot Noir which was very nice, but not quite as good as the one we tried at Jiko.
For my appetiser I ordered the Smokey Portobello soup, with chive oil. This was very, very good, rich, creamy, with a fantastic mushroom flavour and a deep smokiness. I assume it had bacon in, as that was the kind of smoky flavour it had, so DH didn't try it but I loved this, my favourite soup of the trip.
For a change DH had the Selection of Artisan Cheeses. There were three cheeses, 1 blue, 1 cheddar and one goats cheese, served with riesling-poached raisins, plum compote and walnut toast . I don't have a picture of the cheese descriptions, but DH said the blue cheese had been on some of the other cheese plates he'd tried. The goats cheese was nice but firmer than expected, and the cheddar was fine. A very nice cheese plate but not up there with Jiko, Cali Grill and Flying Fish.
For my entree I decided to try the Salmon. Again this was very good, the salmon was beautifully cooked to a medium rare so still nice and pink in the middle, with a great texture and flavour. It was served with a pork, potato and swede hash, which was nice but some pieces were a bit too crispy. To be honest though the salmon was so tasty, I wasn't bothered that I didn't love the hash.
DH had Potato Chive Potstickers. These were nice but seemed a little too overdone, making them slightly too crispy. The filling was very nice and flavourful, and the accompaniment which was a soy vinegiarette was pretty spicy in places. Overall, a nice dish but not one of DH's favourites.
For dessert I had the fig clafoutis. This was really nice, the clafoutis was sweet with the fig being the predominant flavour, and the pastry was nice and thick. It was served with a creamy vanilla icecream, with a fruit ripple running through which was tart and balanced the sweetness. A very nice dessert.
DH had the chocolate cheesecake, which was incredibly rich and creamy with a good, strong chocolate flavour. The creamy accompaniment had a strong zesty flavour, which cut through the richness slightly. Although this didn't look a big portion to me, DH said it seemed too much due to the richness of the dessert. Another nice dessert.
Overall we had another enjoyable meal at Artist Point. I liked the ambiance of the restaurant, the service and the food. It was much quieter than some of the other signatures, both in terms of number of patrons and volume of the restaurant, which lent itself to a romantic meal. Nice restaurant that we'll return to on our next visit to the world.
