2024 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade

When I was a child growing up, watching the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade was a tradition. Now, many years later, I recorded it. I know several Radio City Rockettes and a couple balloon holders, so I'm hoping that I can see them. Also, since DS plays for several Broadway shows, and there are usually a couple shows that make parade appearances, I'll look for that.
Luv Bunnies, you might enjoy going to the blowing up of the balloons the night beforehand, then, you've got a great idea, watch the parade itself from your hotel with your coffee.

First off, Broadway plays/musicals vie for a chance to get into the parade. They won and got in. It sounds like a very funny one and I hope to get a chance to see it next time I am in NY. I'd also like to remind you that Disney has Deadpool streaming on Disney+ and that is far from 'family friendly'.

Second, it is MACY'S PARADE, so fo course they are going to promote their brand! What a silly thing to say.

Third, Macy's doesn't decide which floats are in, so no they could not 'just add' a Moana float. If Disney wanted one then they would have ponied up the money to build one.

I learned that this year's Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade scored the highest ratings in TV this year much like last year's parade did. I am surprised at this because from what Mom and I saw of the parade as I said it looked unappealing. Also what was rap artist T-Pain doing on the parade? My dad spotted him on the Jennie-O Turkey float and thought he looked odd on the parade. I think for next year's parade Macy's is gonna focus on more cartoon and movie character balloons and I found it surprising that they had balloons on Anime characters because my father loves Anime cartoons. I did see Santa's arrival on Youtube and noticed they put Andy Williams's Happy Holiday as his anthem and I wonder if it's Macy's new holiday anthem for this year?. I also have never figured out when Santa Claus makes his entrance he always is silent like Black Bolt and all Santa Claus does is wave and in my eyes they should let Santa say "Merry Christmas" or "Happy Holidays" to give the parade a good ending. I also have questioned who plays Santa Claus in Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parades every year? Because according to Youtube this Santa Claus has done Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parades beginning in 2004. Who is the actor? Because whoever this guy is playing Santa Claus really does the Santa Claus role justice and even my mom likes this Santa Claus too

He's popular and he was asked to be there by Jennie-O, just like others were asked by companies to be on their floats to promote their products.

Again, IT IS NOT UP TO MACY'S TO DECIDE WHAT GOES INTO THE PARADE! If someone wants to submit a balloon or a float THEY PAY MACY'S for the privilege.

Have you ever heard of Google? I bet if you did a tiny bit of searching you could find the answer :magnify:.

I think a little bit of grace would be nice... maybe just ignore posts like this? DodgerGirl likes to think about things, and ask questions about things she thinks.

A number of us believe she is a troll. 90% of her questions could be answered by a simple Google search. Took me 5 seconds to see who played Santa in the parade.

In @Nayan's defense, thinking and asking questions is good. But she seems to ignore the answers to the questions.

Plus a lot of it is rambling. It would be different if she said "I did a search and found out...". Instead, she either ignores or doesn't care when things have been explained and just continues with her thoughts as if no one answered. If someone does answer then it a barrage of questions which a simple search can answer her questions.

I'm pretty sure she's not a troll.

I understand there are a lot of questions, and not as much engagement. We don't all think and process in the same way. It might not be a bad idea to think about that when replying.

And it's simple enough to ignore threads that annoy you, or posters you'd rather not engage with.

I also saw Billy Porter's Ease On Down The Road when I finally found this year's Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in it's entirety on Youtube and he did an okay job with it and not as great as Michael Jackson's original version from The Wiz movie. I then saw Jimmy Fallon do an interview then have a question and answer session from fans and he was mainly promoting his holiday album. The float I was impressed with was the Peacock float and I thought it was amazing with the beautiful peacock and a screen showing Peacock's shows running in the background. I would've watched the rest of the parade but I had to get up but I was lucky to finally find this year's parade in it's entirety on Youtube

I also noticed that Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade has circus acts and this year's circus act was done by Circus Vasquez and they looked cool and I remember when the 80's and 90's parades had performances by The Big Apple Circus and the clown Grandma was always funny to watch. Did Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parades always have circus acts before The Rockettes? I also noticed that they don't have the cheerleading squads perform mini performances before the Broadway musicals began and it's surprising that they did this because they were amazing. Another act they got rid of and i'm glad that they did was the America Sings music group and I found their performances way too long and I couldn't figure out why America Sings got on every single Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in the 90's to the 2000's? But they seemed to be popular with fans

I think that without Jean McFaddin and balloon designer Manfred Bass Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parades had started going downhill and when Jean McFaddin was alive till her retirement in 2001 she made the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parades really good but when Jean died the parade wasn't the same anymore. And when Manfred Bass retired then died it hurt the parade a lot because Manfred created all the hit character balloons for Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and when he died it was also not the same and that's why the parades have started going downhill every Thanksgiving and I bet this year's parade will see a return to the classic image Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade used to have. But what would make Macy's a lot of money that would gain an audience is if they could have an Easter parade. Because it is shocking that Easter parades are not on TV anymore and Macy's would do a great Easter parade in my eyes

It would be harder to schedule an annual Easter parade, I think... it's not on the same day every year. And the weather is more unpredictable in the Spring. And, it's not really shopping season. Thanksgiving is a great kick-off to the Christmas shopping season, so it makes sense for Macy's to have a parade then.

It would be fun to watch an Easter parade, though, wouldn't it? Do you think everyone would wear Easter bonnets? And the Easter Bunny would arrive at the end, like Santa does in the Thanksgiving parade?

I think Macy's has bigger issues than worrying about how to improve a parade.

https://www.cnn.com/2025/01/10/business/macys-closes-66-stores-list/index.html

I see them going the way of Sears and I doubt they'll be around by next year.

You just shush with that. I will genuinely be sad if Macy's can't stay afloat. Retail is having a rough go of it, but I'd really hate to lose Macy's in particular. I think it's because Macy's is the current incarnation of the entity that was a local stalwart here, JL Hudson's. I'm not even old enough to remember the true golden era of Hudson's, but the era I am old enough to remember seems like a fairy tale now. Hudson's isn't even the only gone but fondly remembered stalwart local department chain who now exists as Macy's. One even bigger and more historical candidate is Marshall Field's.

Losing Macy's would be like death by a thousand cuts that opens up thousands of thousands of older cuts all over again in the process.

I remember a number of stores that are no longer around, like Burdines, Belk Lindsey, Jordan Marsh, etc. Shoot, I remember shopping at Zayres (yeah I'm old lol).

It would be sad to lose Macys as a whole but not a surprise if they went under. Malls are dying/closing and shopping habits have changed.

When I travel for work, I'll often go to a mall to just walk and get some exercise. I've been in bustling malls (probably 95%+ occupied) and malls that are obviously dying (probably <60% occupied). There's got to be more than "shopping habits have changed" for why some malls are still flourishing and others aren't.
