2024 Destash Dare to be Bare!

my oldest has been selling stuff on facebook marketplace so i pulled out some stuff (mostly kids book) and emptied about 4 banker boxes as result to the tune (so far) of about $200 :thumbsup2 i also decided to purge my kitchen cabinets of all the dinnerware-i decided that my wedding china was not doing any good just collecting dust in the china hutch so it's now being used every day:-)

Update:

August - Cleaned out my daughter's bedroom! Still have piles of items to take to the Goodwill and a local thrift store
September - Basement.... getting it done. Might not finish it this month but trying to get it finished
October - Garage
November - Extra Bedroom
December - Home Office

Finally got around to taking a box to the op shop the other day. 2 more in the car ready to go. Picked up a few storage items over the last few weeks too, so my office is starting to come together nicely.
Last week I got around to taking those 2 boxes to the op shop. Got another one filling up in the office now - planning to take it tomorrow.

Need to book in another council collection to get rid of some of our e-waste and larger items. I'm considering booking it for when my partner isn't here - I don't think he'll miss anything I get rid of, but if he sees it going he might try to stop me lol!

September was not to bad of a month, lots of little things that were tucked away were dealt with as we are getting ready for some some construction work here at home this comming week! I am sure I will find more stuff to get rid of when we start putting everything back together including the stockpile of supplies that we have been storing to get this project done!

1 broken storage bin - trashed
3 expired medicines - recycled/trashed
2 broken headphones recycled/trashed
2 broken CD cases - trashed
1 mixed CD - trashed
1 pair of sneakers - trashed
2 empty cardboard CD cases - recycled
1 grocery bag of misc papers/bills/receipts - shredded/recycled

5 headphone sets w/ plug in jack - donated to my classroom
1 CD case - donated

My new roof and gutters was done a few weeks ago. My sons took everything down from the attic. I cleaned up a lot. Donated so much - had to have another pick up. Coming Tuesday. I only have a few things up there now.

I also cleaned up most of the closet down my basement and put a few things in there rather than back up in the attic. I won't be going up and down there as much as my DH did. Luggage, a small Christmas tree with lights we had just bought. I won't be decorating for a while....but I have it down for next year if I decide to take it out.

Also so many little things, trays, cute serving/candy dishes, vases. Some in boxes, some out - I call them now dust collectors :(.

Got my youngest daughter's bedroom completely cleaned out and organized. Working on oldest daughter's now - about 75% complete. It's slower going because I have her doing the bulk of the work, while I encourage and supervise ;). Have 4 trash bags overflowing ready to take to Goodwill, threw away about 3 full of trash and entered 138 items into our local children's pop up consignment sale - 81 have sold so far with 2 days left of the sale!

Made a plan to complete the rest of the house by New Year's - we'll see how much real life gets in the way between now and then lol

Tidied up the basement. Consolidated more. Didn’t lose a lot. We forgot to get rid of the bathroom door down there. It will go this weekend.
There is a small desk done there, offering that out to family members.
There is several empty copy boxes from moving DS that can go.
And the congrats grad stuff.
And one broken dehumidifier. Will go out for Monday.
The desk is going to a coworker kid tomorrow. I took an avengers picture to a different coworker today. And dropped off a few things to goodwill.

i know this thread is for decluttering BUT-an old door can make a BOMB banquet type table. a friend's family had a catering buisness and used doors for the tables (you buy the kits for the legs which fold up), one of which i inherited. we keep it stowed away and it is the best large outdoor serving table, garage sale table, any kind of craft/planting table.

i went through the linen area today-sheets for which the elastic has died-tossed, pot holders that no longer shield against heat-tossed, pillow cases with no matching sheets/bedding-tossed....it's nice to see some decluttered shelves.

October was a good month got ris of some small stuff as well as some big stuff (contruction supplies for our reno project that have been sitting around for a while waiting for the contractor to get started! All in all another 66 items are not gone!

15 Boxes of flooring - installed

All of the construction supplies have been stacked and tucked here and there around the house to keep things in somewhat order and somewhat funtional at the same time. Now to continue to unpack and sort through things as items go back into the two room that were redone, so hopefully a few more items will leave the house next month

I don’t think I actually posted anything this year as cancer usually rules my life these days but with youngest ds help we donated 11 bags of clothes. Both his and mine.
Then oldest ds took a giant tote box of his stuff from our garage that I didn’t even know was there.
Gave 5 books to a friend.

we have the back of our new vehicle packed with several boxes and bags of stuff my oldest is purging (what was not selling on Facebook marketplace). it all goes to the charity shop Wednesday. i went through some of my Christmas decorations and grabbed a few other things we will list on the marketplace tomorrow-if they have not sold by the end of the month they will go as well.

Freshened up the pantry again today. Took some canned goods downstairs and put them together - the ones that were the same so I could see how much I have of each one.
Got rid of the expired ones.
Put some on the counter, that are expiring January 25. Told DH use any of them if hungry.

I know some folks get skeeved out by using them after the date but many if not most canned goods are perfectly fine well past the dates printed on them. the u.s.d.a. website has a wealth of information on how long past these dates foods are perfectly safe with no impact on taste or quality.

I'm new to the 2024 decluttering party and happy to report that I have had a semi successful year. Semi-successful because we moved 16 months ago & our garage still is packed full of items I couldn't part with.

The good stuff: My son and his wife are expecting their first child in December. DS was shocked but pleased that I gave them his satin comforter made by his great grandmother. His favorite stuffed animal, 2nd favorite stuffed toy, fun rattle and a colorful whoozit, still being sold 30 years later.

Even more exciting is that my sis and I teamed up on a yard sale, fb marketplace and 3 popular consignment stores. It paid for 1/3 of our upcoming January WDW trip. We're booked in a moderate hotel for a week, park tickets, deluxe dining plan and a spa day. The trip was the incentive for our hard work.

I will definitely be joining the 2025 decluttering group.

Today is the first time I’ve clicked into this thread and it’s such a funny coincidence. With both of my college-aged children home for the holiday, I devised a plan to start turning their bedrooms from high school bedrooms to adult bedrooms. I placed a cardboard box in each room and instructed them that the cardboard box needed to be filled before they left. It could be items to donate or to take to their college apartments with them.

My son fought this project bitterly, complaining there was no reason to remove anything from his room - Including the clothes I pointed out were now two sizes too small for him. My daughter, on the other hand, excitedly invited me into her room as she sorted through drawer after drawer, sharing memories of every little thing - including her socks, as she decided which pairs would be donated, and which ones would be going back to college with her. She couldn’t wait to have some other little girl get her hand-me-downs.

This is exactly how they acted as young children when they were tasked with choosing which toybox toys to donate.

Isn’t it crazy how personalities differ when it comes to letting go of “things”.

End of year declutter round up: overall very satisfied with out decluttering efforts this year! Could we have done, absoulutely but it is what it is. Slow and steady wins the race!

This month we got rid of an additional 16 items, not a steller total but progress none the less. Each month allows for some items to leave while also decreasing the inflow of items. I would hazzard to guess that 95% of the items that entered the house this year were cosumable/replacement items (clothing, food, and remodling supplies)

Dec items that left the house:

3 strings of non working X-mas lights - recycled

1 broken can opener - trashed
1 pair of dress shoes - trashed

2 picture frames - hung up

4 picture frames - donated

1 partial notepad - used up
2 disposable rain ponchos from travel box - used up
1 Gift Card - used up and recycled
1 picture frame - given away
