2016 pennies?

this may seem like an odd question with probably a very obvious answer how soon into 2016 will I be able to start seeing 2016 pennies. I want to use them for my pressed penny collection when we go in april...thanks

No first hand experience, but I checked presscoins.com and they had the first post about 2015 pennies on January 1st.. so I'd say ther probably start changing them even before the end of the year...

The pressed penny folks recommend using pre 1982 pennies. They are made of solid copper and look better than the current zinc with copper coating pennies.

Is there a reason you would like to use 2016 pennies???

I usually see the new years pennies come into stores as spare change first. I'd say March is when I see them. I don't usually see banks stocked with them until April/May. Shop a little at Target and Walmart in Feb/March and check the cash registers for the new shiny.

Also, PP recommended pre-1982. I agree, a better result. Search your change for shiny 70's coins for best results. Even if you use 2016's, the luster will deteriorate faster due to the zinc.

That's what I thought too. Using 2016 issue pennies doesn't matter because all markings are pressed flat and can't be seen anymore anyway, and as others have said, the zinc makes them less than ideal.

It is the year of our trip but if the date is not going to show anyways I am going to start looking for shiny pre 1982 pennies.

Most of the original engraving is lost to the press. Sometimes you can kinda see a little of it on the back, but details like the date would be unlikely to be still visible.

Just get the pre 1982 pennies. A little bit of toothpaste or tarnish remover will make them shine. Good luck!!!
