2016 Epcot International Food and Wine Festival: September 14 - November 14, 2016

I mean, that's nice & all, but you don't really need any qualifications to determine whether or not someone is a likable person. She could be the best of the best on paper, but she's working with the public. If the public doesn't like her, she's not the right choice.

I somehow doubt the spirited defense is from a random stranger just concerned about this person's job. The truth is I don't like her and I will not pay to listen to her anymore. Her qualifications were never questioned her style was.

And the fact that last year she was allowed to shill her own products was very strange. Most companies will not allow you to sell personal products on their time. I have no idea why Disney thought that was a good idea

Agreeing with you WVAspartan!

First, let me preface this with saying that this will be our 17th year as an attendee at the Food & Wine Festival. We have no association with Disney other than being DVC owners and having APs. As memory serves us, the hostess in question has been there each year for special/private events before 9 AM all the way to late at night continuing to sometimes past 10 PM at other events where we have attended.

For several years out middle son (in his 30s) attended with us for four or five days as his schedule permitted (he is a certified American Culinary Federation chef at a large midwestern university). His opinion was that the hostess was quite good at keeping to the time scheduled for the presentation and also at bringing out questions during the presentation that the audience could be having as he was preparing the dish. Our son felt that if he was the chef up on the stage cooking that he would probably be leaving out all sorts of important details that the audience could use. And he said to me "You know that she already knows the answers to these questions she is asking...she is asking them to clarify for the audience."

And it appears that Disney Management has it right with this individual. Due to some posters questioning qualifications, I have done some research.

To become a registered dietitian, you need to do at least some things:
  1. Take the specific set of courses outlined by the Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics (AND) full of chemistry, biology, anatomy, physiology, etc. This can be completed at the undergraduate OR graduate level.
  2. Complete the required internships, also outlined by Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics.
  3. Take the state RD exam (and pass it!).
  4. Continue more academic and professional work in the future to maintain current credentials
She has also, not only written, but successfully had published 15 books, been the owner of her own company for well over three decades, where her clients included The Orlando Magic, LA Clippers and ...well you get the point: Speaking engagements in various large cities for American Dental Association, American Diabetes Assn. and more. Then there was a stint at CIA (Culinary Institute of America) at Greystone: Napa, CA. We have appearances on The Today Show and regular radio spots. And so much more if one looks.

So, yes, I do believe that Disney Management has gotten this one right. And as the critics on the thread admit themselves, she manages to do this and be pleasant about it as far as we, personally, have seen for 16 years.

I now invite those mean spirited posters who have judged without doing the research as I have done, to submit their qualifications for being able to judge so capriciously and make comments that could cause someone to lose their job.
I'm not sure what any of this has to do with many people finding her annoying in that role...?? That has nothing to do with other "qualifications"... :confused3

I'm not agreeing nor disagreeing with the comments about the hostess; to each his own. However, from all of the comments on here, I was really expecting someone terrible but I thought she was fine. Not the best hostess ever but certainly not the worst and I've, attended several different events at different times. So if you are new, please don't let the comments steer you away from attending what you want to see.

I didn't want to be the one to say it. ;)

I wouldn't personally suggest anyone NOT BOOK or CANCEL because of her. But at the few events we've attended with her as hostess, we all felt she detracted. At one, we wondered if she might have had a few too many drinks prior. Not a good look.

We've still booked one cooking demo and the what's cookin' with Alex Guarnaschelli event for this year. And as I said, I'm glad to hear that Alex controls the demo HERSELF. :thumbsup2

I mentioned it before that I think beer flights will only consist of 3 beers now instead of the previous 4 beers. I will not be happy if that is the case.
Yeah I did see that post.
Three will not be great - especially if some of them are ciders

The only place I saw flights explicitly listed was the craft beers location - but obviously we shall see as things get closer

I am one of her "detractors", not because of her knowledge or lack of, but because of her presentation skills. She doesn't know when to stop talking and let the chef do his or her thing. Yes, there are chefs that are less informative than others and may need some help in explaining what they are doing or sharing useful info. My sense is that she doesn't know the difference. Does it stop me from attending the culinary demos? No it doesn't. We book the ones we want to attend and just hope for the best. The best is the few that are hosted by the guy who occasionally replaces her.

Brewer's Collection also advertises a flight even though they list only 3 beers. I've trained my eyes to spot the word flight. Last year, the Hops & Barley had a beer flight but they don't list one this year. I'm also surprised that the *new* Chocolate Studio doesn't carry a chocolate beer as those have become popular over the past few years.

Also, what is up with Germany having one beer listed (Radeberger Zwickel Pilsner), which is also offered at the Brewer's Collection?

I don't see a flight listed at brewers collection, just the craft beers - and that is 6 choices anyway

Yeah Germany is a bit of a surprise - but I guess they have a few options at the beer cart there and inside already

Belgium has three choice..but one is a cider and not really interested in Stella, let alone a Stella cider.

Somewhat surprised at Ireland as well - no cider and only one beer.(seems like quiet a few are only one beer)

As many mention above we don't care how she looks on paper the majority here thinks she doesn't do a good job as a hostess, perhaps she should stick to writing books.

As a paying guest we have the right to tell Disney hey we would really enjoy this expirience more is she wasn't part of it or say we aren't booking this event this year because of her. I highly doubt the chefs that have been interrupted by her enjoy it either. If enough of us actually write to Disney we will see a change.

And if you are posting to defend yourself perhaps take the critism as a way to make improvements and grow from it.

Yea, I agree about Belgium. Biggest item I want to get there is the waffle with chocolate. I had to skip it last year because my group had just finished the Mediterranean Food & Wine pairing. Looking at last year's menu, Belgium had a flight consisting of their current offerings plus Palm Special Belgian Amber Ale.

And I may have found where all of the beers have gone. Block & Hans lists 5 different beers on their current menu. Looking at last year's menu, Block & Hans only showed wines and champagnes. Lets hope their menu doesn't change for the F&W.

Last year, Ireland probably had the biggest overpriced item, the Kerrygold Irish Cream liqueur. For $8.00, they served it in a thimble sized cup.

Another newbie question for those who have been in the past.

The chefs that are there for the book signings, are they the ones that are already there giving seminars or is there a chance that other chefs are there at the time specifically for their book signing?

Ireland is most likely only one since they are usually next to UK and Rose & Crown pub usually has a few Irish beers on tap to cover that booth. Usually find something R&C doesn't have on tap at the booth

Looks like Pam found the boards! :welcome:

Right the "We have appearances on The Today Show and regularradio spots. And so much more if one looks." Kind of gave it away...

As the day goes on, you can see the effects of the wine!! If doing multiple seminars in a day, you will definitely see a difference in her as the day progresses! :rotfl:

Over the 14 or 15 years (I've lost count!) I've been attending these seminars, I've gotten used to her and she really doesn't detract from my experience anymore!!!

We're doing our first F&W this year (yay!) and have the tequila lunch booked, but we're wondering if we should book more special events or just enjoy all the different food. We were looking at the Rockin' Burger Block Party since we're slightly burger obsessed, but we haven't been reading the most glowing reviews. Any thoughts on what we should do?

Thanks!

I booked only one special event my first time around and picked up a few of demos and wine tastings along the way on the fly while in the Festival Center. I guess it would depend on how much time you have there, how much money you want to spend and what you want to get out of it. Last year I felt a little over booked and learned my lesson so this year I have one food and wine pairing meal, a culinary demo and wine tasting each day and a cheese seminar on Sat. morning and the rest of my time I've left free. I've booked the demo and wine pairing one after the other and the earliest times so that the rest of my day is free. One can only eat and drink so much and I really felt like I had to rush out of whatever park I was at to get to whatever event I had booked last year. I generally go to the other parks during the morning and head over to F&W around 11:30 or so and snack around until I'm too full to eat another bite and hop over to another park for a change of scenery.
