2016 Destash - The more things you own, the more they own you

Just shipped out a pair of Capri Jeans, I sold on my Buy/Sell/Trade Facebook group. 3 more to go.
Last week, I went thru all my clothes again, and got rid of clothes that I didn't enjoy wearing, but wore it, because there was nothing wrong with it.
I love simplifying my wardrobe-I plan on doing it weekly.

Not much to report today. Relocated 2 empty tea tins and 2 empty honey jars to the garage. I will use those to sort nuts and bolts. That needs to be DH's job this summer.
And I cleaned my kitchen, that was a major feat.

I took 190 hangers of clothes (most purchased for resale) to a consignment sale. Then I properly stored the items that didn't sell. I also scheduled a garage sale two weeks from Friday to clear out household goods.

Oh and I got a new box of Rubbermaid food containers. I recycled all the sour cream, cottage cheese containers, stuff like that. I went from two drawers to one drawer. Then I was able to organize another cabinet and put the things I need every week in my newly emptied drawer. It might take a year, but I will get that kitchen organized!

Not much progress to report here.

I still need to go through the front room closet and tv stand in the living room. We have to de-clutter the office and the garage as well, but I need my DH to help with those because those are his areas, and I'm not sure what he wants to keep or get rid of. The garage is definitely going to be a project for sure. :scared:

I am feeling that it's crunch time! My family will be here in 3 weeks for DD's graduation. I got the junk drawer cleaned out again and the kitchen shelves I organized are staying in good shape. I need to go through one more cabinet that always gets to be overflowing and the freezer.

We took all the patio furniture out of the garage last weekend and it was nice to get that space back. I am still working on areas out there.

I went through DD's room this week and organized some of the piles. Her room will be a disaster again when she comes back from school. She is moving away at the end of the summer so I'm going to enjoy a last summer with her home and last mess of a room!

Also cut out most of the carpet from the basement and got it out to the trash. I'm looking for some big remnants this weekend to hold us over until we're sure the basement will stay dry permanently.

Up this weekend, painting kitchen ceiling, finding carpet, and painting trim. Decluttering a piece of the garage so that its done by May.

Who's got weekend projects?

I let my "skinny" clothes go. These are clothes from my early 20's that I finally realized I should never wear again, even if I managed to fit into them. I gave the appropriate clothes to my friends daughter. That's 2 totes of clothes gone. I also gave away 3 dresses to my friend that I just didn't love anymore. No reason to hold onto them and I know she can use them.

I have to rotate out my winter stuff to spring and summer stuff so I'll do that all week. Now that I've got more space in my closet I can easily reorganize and put stuff away instead of in a corner.

I think I'm going to get rid of the majority of my scrapbooking and crafting stuff. I don't talk to anyone that still scrapbooks so I'm thinking of listing it on CL. I don't think I'll ever get back into scrapbooking so I'm done paying to move and store it.

I've decided I am moving again this year. That's really lit a fire in me to get rid of stuff. I just hope DS can part with at least some of his toys by October. I'm sick of paying for an apartment that I love but the management company just won't take care of properly. I'd rather pay less money if I complain this often! I've got my eye on two places. One is 250 square feet less than I have now and one is almost half as much space as I have now. Time to get rid of clutter!

Thanks to this thread, I've been taking advantage of the school break to get a little head start on my summer decluttering. In 3 days, I've done two shelves full of stuff (plus I had a couple bags of clothes previously sorted).

Already left the house:
Some craft supplies to a couple of neighbor girls
Two games to another kid to donate at scout camp
About half a bag of broken/useless stuff to the trash bin

In bags/boxes ready to go to charity or the library:
4 puzzles
3 games
a lap desk
2 bags of kids' clothes
1 pair of outgrown ice skates
and 24 DVDs!

I've also been trying to follow the "one thing in, one thing out" plan, so when I got a new glass batter bowl, I tossed an old plastic one (plus a couple of mismatched Tupperware-type containers for good measure - 1 bottom without a lid, and four lids without bottoms).

Just put 10 bags/boxes of goodies out for Purple Heart to pick up today. I am sure I have more just need to go through all of the rooms. Especially the kitchen. I have so many things I never use there.

We started working on the garage today. I'm hoping we can be done by Memorial Day. We'll see how it goes.

I listed 3 more items on eBay today. Clutter is leaving the house a little bit at a time! :)

Put in the yard sale pile:
16 CD cases
5 CD's
30 books

Yard Sale will be at end of June after school is done, anything not sold will be donated the same day!!

Just a bit more but moving in the right direction!!

This is my problem that I plan to rectify! I have lots of clothes that I just don't wear anymore for various reasons. Time for them to go!

Again, too many clothes I have held onto for a long time. I plan to weed through some of them over the weekend. Hopefully, I can report back here on Monday my progress.
I, too have lots of scrapbooking materials and rubber stamps I no longer use. So, I need to figure something about them. I am thinking of donating some to the art teacher at school or a girl scout troop might like them.

22 Books to the yard sale pile (amazing how many books are stashed here and there)
15 assorted pieces of scrap material that truly was junk removed from a cupboard
1 recycled old catalog that I uncovered

ETA: Just found 3 more ink cartridges to recycle :)

Just a bit more and still making progress

Hi all, I have been trying to get my clutter under control also. I read a tip somewhere that I started with my summer clothing. I went and packed away my winter things, then I put my summer things out into my closet with the hangers facing toward me, then once I wear it, and re hang I flip the hanger to face away from me. At the end of the summer I will know what clothing items I need to purge because I didn't wear it all summer.

A bit more out the door:

20 pair of underwear - garbage

8 magazines - receycled

2 like shampoo bottles combined into 1

1 package of 6 undershirts new still in package - donate

30 books - yard sale
1 hat ball cap style - yard sale (was a freebie and never worn)
1 Hot Dog grilling Fork - Yard sale
1 35mm photo lens for a camera that we no longer own - yard sale
3 windshield ice shields that do not work very well - yard sale

1 misc box of robotics materials to our Robotics Center
1 misc mailing envelope of robotics electronics to our Robotics Center
1 Donation Jar back to the Robotics Center now that the fundraiser is complete!!

2 brand new puzzles - Yard Sale
1 board game - Yard Sale

I just read through the thread. I always start the year really well decluttering and then it kind of slides and more things accumulate through the end of the year only to begin again in January. I'm trying to keep the momentum going. In order to help motivate myself I'm using all money from things on CL to go towards a new lens for the camera that I've been wanting, either a zoom or 35 mm prime. We had a yard sale last weekend and got rid of lots of stuff but not nearly enough. I'm still going through and pulling out things that we don't need/use anymore to get rid of. I have 3 boxes of stuff in the garage leftover from the yard sale to donate to Goodwill and had a lot of things to trash after cleaning out the garage during the yard sale in-between customers.

I switched out summer for winter. In doing so I found 2 items to go to the new consignment store that opened and I found a few more items that can get trashed.

I also organized my bins after getting rid of stuff. I now have 1 bin of winter, 1 bin of clothes that are a size too small, and 1 bin of clothes I can't part with. These include my first concert shirt, my marching band shirts, etc. I know I should take pictures and move on but I'm not there yet. But having moved down from 5 bins to 3 I'll take it!

DS is working on his room today. I'm gonna step in later and help him along but he's at least got his laundry put away.
