2016 Destash - The more things you own, the more they own you

I am back in after about a year of being away. Despite 3 trips to Disney lasy year while my daughter was doing the CP I just never spent much time on the DIS. I have a few boxes ready for a yard sale and my goal is 6 items a day aside for the sale. Anything thrown away or donated is a plus. Right now I am working 2 jobs so the house is suffering

Welcome or welcome back to posters!

I am working on the basement today. Last night, I took a huge tub of Legos to clean up for donation. I saved some for DS but many more are going. Also looked at the "outgrown toy" closet and found I am not ready to tackle some of that. I figure as long as things are in there and organized, I will re-evaluate down the road. We have gotten rid of a lot and I'm working on a new pile that should finish off outgrown kid clutter. Then I will take those donations this week.

There were 2 boxes of old in the closet. I need to shred or recycle them over this next week as I watch tv.

This afternoon I went through my photo bins and started sorting into photo boxes per kid. That is a long term job!

We have one of those 9 bin organizers that will be empty now. The kind with 3shelves and colorful open rectangular tubs. I used one for video games but not sure about other one. Any ideas of how to use it other than toys? Otherwise I will donate it.

So pleased. This week I got a start on KonMar-ing my kitchen. Teatowels, done. Cutlery, done, Casserole/glass bowls, done. Plasticwear, done. Several boxes waiting to be picked up by the Canadian Diabetes Clothesline. Still lots to do, but the start is a good feeling!

My handyman came back this week and did the tile back splash in the kitchen that I have neglected way too long. Used up:
1 box of tile
1 box grout
1 box of tile adhesive
1 container of adhesive liquid

While the tile was being done I was able to straighten out the pantry
donated 2 boxes of pudding (cook kind)
donated 2 cans of cream style corn (the labels are so close to regular easy mistake)
trashed 2 opened expired boxes of baking powder
trashed 2 expired can goods

Every little it helps!! :)

My Robotics Teams are doing a expo at our local mall. That being said there will be 6 various robotics vehicles/boxes of parts leaving my house for the demo and then going over to our robotics center for regular use after today!!

Just a little bit everyday makes a difference :)

Gotta ask.... FRC Robotics by any chance??..................P

I will be finished with the kid corner of the basement as soon as I get help bringing up the piles. I have a pile to donate and a bag of trash. The toy closet has space for the legos and box of costume/props with room to spare. We will donate a big bag of matchbox cars, some misc. toys, 2 baskets, big toy horse, bag of costumes, and a Barbie dream house (18 yr old and still in good shape!). I also have 2 porch chairs to donate and whatever I can find in the garage. I plan to take it later today because I want everything OUT!

A big pot of coffee with lots of creamer helped create a sugar/caffeine surge of motivation!

Ok, the Barbie dream house is still here. I couldn't do it. Everything else is gone! I also found a bag of clothes, few pairs of shoes, and a box of misc. stuff in the garage to donate as well.

The basement is officially tackled and decluttered! I kept more toys than necessary but I figure when I want to donate more, it's organized and will be easy to box up. For now, it's all in one little closet.

I need to find a mid-sized box for some of DS's stuff then it's the last box to go in the closet. The photos & momentos are neatly stacked in totes in the guest room closet to work on in stages. The arts & crafts are sorted and stored in a different closet. I would like to pare down some of our old comforters that we keep for sleepovers and there is a tote of things to take upstairs.

DH is going to help tear out the rest of the carpet next weekend. We had a minor flood and had to tear out parts of the carpet. Now we need to finish the job and replace it or paint the cement.

The garage looks better but that will be another day or two before it's really anywhere close to being organized. The household tools/paint stuff/fix it supplies need to be organized but I will probably wait until summer for those shelves.

Next up - painting and fix it projects. Back to the garage when I get motivated and have some hours to work on it.

How's everyone else doing on their spring cleaning? The guy at Goodwill said it had been busy there today and there were piles of donations in the hallway when I dropped them off.

We have 1 FLLJr, 3 FLL, and 2 FTC Teams that we coach and mentor.

WOW! I coached/mentored an FLL team for 5 years (my DH joined me the last two years) and now my DH has mentored our DS's FRC team for the past 4 years (I "help" but I'm not an official mentor). DS graduates this year, so I am saying that I am officially done with FIRST, but DH really enjoys it so I think he will continue to mentor this team. He has also volunteered to judge at regional FLL competitions.... I could see myself doing that in the future.

Anyhow.... WTG! That is a great thing that you are doing!............P

We finally made progress in our back bedroom/office/junk room!
DH got a huge storage shed about a month ago and yesterday we moved a few larger items into it that we had stored in the back bedroom such as our basinett and some Christmas décor.
Then we got rid of the 2nd desk we had in there taking up way to much space-moved my desk to a new corner and got it all setup for bill paying/couponing etc. I have a large pile of about 15 items I am going to sell on facebook yardsale sites and a box of clothes for donations.

IT feels great to have this room somewhat looking good now and I know this week we can finish it off. I would love to do a deep organization of the house but with a toddler I'm good with just cleaning at the moment :)

I begged my kids to do the CP at Disney, they did not have the same passion for it as I did. I am doing 2 items. Today, I considered the garbage and a computer monitor as my 2 things. It is tough, but I think it is more manageable. 35 years worth of stuff is crazy.

Went through my closet this weekend. Got rid of trash; rearranged what I wanted to keep; moved a small chest in to store sweaters
Got 6 pairs of shoes that wore only 2-3 times - donated
Sack of clothes - to be donated
8 scarves - given to friend

Starting going through garage today to toss items. Hope to sell some items on FB site 1) get rid of & 2) earn money for Sept trip

DH and I have been here 25 years but my parents moved in in 1976 and left a lot of their things. My daughter loved the CP. She wants to go back

On Saturday, the kids cleaned and de-cluttered their room. Yesterday, my oldest DD helped me clean and de-clutter the kitchen, while my youngest DD worked on the linen closet and living room. I still need to go through all of the stuff in the TV stand and in the living room closet, and the living room will be done. So, almost 5 out of 6 rooms are done. The only room that is left is DH's office, and I need him to help me with that because I don't know what stuff can go and what can't. After that, we need to de-clutter the garage and well..... Let's just say that it will take awhile. :faint:

Hey guys! I really need to do this, currently in living in students dorms as a warden. So I live here all year round and gave a very big room. I've only been here a year after moving to London from Scotland, Glasgow. However somehow I have so much stuff! As I only have a room I want to get it down so it doesn't feel so full and messy. I'm considering getting the Maria book. Is it any good?

Keep you posted on how I do :p x

3 pair of pants donated :)

ETA 4 pair of socks trashed

I love the Marie Kondo book. When I read through it, I learned a new perspective on things. It isn't a "get rid of everything" philosophy, but a "keep what you love/brings joy" philosophy. When I am cleaning, I really do have to hold each item, think about it, and then make a decision. When I haven't, I have kept things that really don't bring me joy and I really don't need. eg. earlier this week I "KMed" my laundry room. Well, I cleaned, I didn't use the philosophy-just sorted, tossed and put back. I just went in and noticed that I kept TWO extra glass teapots. Do I need two? No. Do I love both? No. I keep one for my 'regular tea' (not green tea) guests. I decided to hold each, and keep just one. Embracing a new philosophy is tough, but so freeing! Good luck!

This week, after cleaning the laundry room and more kitchen, I sent several boxes to the Canadian Diabetes Association. And a bag that DH had donated when he KMed his closet. He kept most things, but I finally got rid of his sports coat that was old when we got married 32 years ago, and a lot of ties. This was a real step for him!

We got rid of all the extra tile and samples this week after finally having our kitchen backsplash and 1/2 bathroom floor tiled.

I sold quite a few cross stitch magazines on ebay, and some china that we no longer wanted. I'm looking foward to going through more of that too sell this weekend.

I'm going to get my summer bulbs planted this weekend too so those will be out of the dining room (otherwise known as the ebay/craigs list room. LOL).

And I listed the barbie doll house, tiki room party supplies and a 3 1/2 foot lavendar christmas tree on Craig's List so I hope those sell soon.
