2013 Marching Band Thread

Marcy that's unbelievable. What a talented group and such a huge band!

Here's a video of the last song of my daughter's show. During the middle of the show she hit herself in the face with her rifle. I didn't get it on video. As usual, I thought I was taping and wasn't, so this is after that happened. You can hear me speaking to my mom through the video thinking I'm seeing mascara or that she cut her arm. At the beginning she's the second girl to toss her rifle, at the end she's all the way to the right. I was so proud of her that she kept going.

Your poor daughter!! What a trooper for sticking it out!! I have a lot of admiration for small bands- those kids really need to know their parts! No hiding behind 30 other of the same instrument! They sounded really good!! Thanks for sharing :)

Thanks for sharing ask of the shows. Everyone looks great. We had msba championships this weekend. It is or first year in a higher class. There were a lot of unknowns, but we were thrilled to place second out of nineteen bands!

Our final performance will be at grand nationals in Indy. Is anyone else going this year? I want to know who I should cheer for. :)

We all admit it was probably their worst performance of the year. After coming off a win the previous week they received the second lowest score of the day of any band. Hopefully it's not a precursor for what's to come this weekend at Nationals. We honestly have no chance of winning. And out of 18 or 19 bands I'd be happy if we placed in the Top 10. This is the first week they haven't changed anything in the show.

Just hoping for a better showing when indoor starts up. And no more injuries! ;)

Congrats! That's fantastic. Good luck at Grand Nationals. After tomorrow in Allentown, band season is over. So sad. Wish my daughter had found color guard earlier. I'm not ready to be done after only 2 years. ;)

Two years would make me sad too! I love being a guard mom. My daughter started at the end of 6th grade. She wanted to start a year earlier but the program was full.

And the college she'll be attending next year doesn't have a football team, much less a marching band.

Her director asked if she'd like to do DCI over the summer, but I don't know that she'll have the time to dedicate to it, or the financial resources. :rotfl:

Well marching season has come to an end for us. It's bittersweet - it's nice to have our lives back, but I will miss the show. This year's show was probably my favorite so far, so emotional and moving!

We went to State last Tuesday. I thought we had a really good chance at winning, but we were the silver medal winners. Our band had gone through some significant events in the 10 days leading up to state too, so the fact that they could still perform at the level that they did impressed me. The kids were a little disappointed, but silver is REALLY good. Plus it helps a ton that all 3 medals were won by schools from our district. They LOVED seeing their friends in other schools come home with medals.

So like others have said, there is no rest. It's right on to concert season and Winter Guard. Region Orchestra auditions start tomorrow, plus we still go to the football games and our team has made the playoffs again. So I'll enjoy whatever short break we have and rest up for what's next.

Our football team won its playoff game. :cool1: We aren't in the State Championship playoffs, but we are in some Conference playoff series instead (I don't quite understand it).

Anyway, the team plays again next week. The band director is considered a new show (no marching, just standing on the field) for the playoff game next week since tomorrow is the band's final competition of the season.

Is there an independent guard she can try out for next year. Must of our girls take that route instead of college marching band.

There are. As a matter of fact the marching band director asked her to join DCI over the summer. It's quite an honor but I don't know that it will work out. She wants to be a counselor at Girls State this summer and with it being the summer before college, I just don't know. She could also join Rutgers guard, but she'll be away at school about 1-1/2 hrs away so there's no way she could make the practices and travel being so far away.

On a absolutely, phenomenal note: WE CAME IN 5TH AT NATIONALS!!!!!! :dance3::cool1::rotfl2::yay::cheer2::dance3::yay::cool1::yay: I couldn't be more excited. As you can see from my prior post, I would have been happy with Top 10, but Top 5?! :cheer2::dance3::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo: And better than that, they took the caption awards of BEST GUARD AND BEST PERCUSSION!!!!!! OMG I was so excited, I cried, they cried, it was the best feeling EVER! After such a dismal performance last week, to get Best Guard?! I'm still crying. And while their biggest nemesis came in first, we took best guard and percussion. I still can't believe it. The kids were perfect today. I can't believe it all came together just at the right moment. And it was phenomenal to see my daughter on the field for awards. Since it's Nationals all the seniors go up. To watch their faces as each band was counted off (18 bands total) it was just the absolute BEST! When they got to "and in fifth place winning the caption awards of best guard and best percussion...." It was honestly the most joyous occasion for us all. Can you tell my ecstatic by my rambling?! What a perfect end for all our seniors. I'm sitting here crying now, just typing it up. It was such an emotional day today. :woohoo::rotfl2::cool1::thumbsup2:grouphug:pixiedust::hyper::banana::woohoo::dancer:party::jumping1:

Well it finally comes to a end today. They did great today and came in 7th. It was awesome seeing them match at MetLife again. Next year well be are last year. Not sure how I feel about that. My ds plans on trying out for the cadets. He is so hoping to get in. He plays tuba and they have 13 so who knows.

oooh that would have been AWESOME to start that young!
My dd would never have been strong enough though at that age. :thumbsup2

her younger sister is 5th grade & has drop & speed spins down - well mostly

What did she start learning so young?

Hey!!! We were there! My daughter's band was in the 2nd half (Group II), but we saw some of your group also, and a few of the final bands in your group. I couldn't stick it out until awards though. Too late for us, and a two hour drive home. Congrats on your great showing though! That's awesome!

Here is the link to the Youtube video for our field show on Saturday. (my son- freshman drummer- is the last drummer on the left when you are looking at the screen :) )

Wow amazing. Never seen a band with this style...never seen bagpipes in a band, or majorettes who don't toss. and no colorguard. :confused3 Are there a lot of bands with this style?

Loved the band formations.

Thanks Julie! :goodvibes

What a crazy day... We still don't know how the band did -- it was raining and lightning so much for a while and it delayed everything so bad, they had to cancel Finals. There were still 6 bands to perform, and we're hoping it cleared up enough for them to make it onto the field. We think it did. Then they're going to judge based on prelims and let everyone know. We'll see!! They sounded and looked better than we have heard them yet... we're all very proud of them.

I recorded their first movement -- it's in 720p, but you might have to change the setting so it'll play back in that resolution.

That looked great - I'm a guard mom so I was watching the flags naturally. There was an amazing toss @ the 2:05 mark or so...they were walking fast/jogging under the toss. Nice job!:thumbsup2

On our way to Atlanta this morning. Kids arrived yesterday morning and had a fun day taking it easy. Have never been to the Atlanta Super Regional before and looking forward to seeing bands that we haven't seen before. Hope everyone has a great weekend!

Wow that sure is quite a trip from OK to ATL....how long were they there? I hope you didn't have a lot of far away competitions like that. Though of course it was fabulous to qualify but I imagine expensive! ;)
