2013 Marching Band Thread

It's another Friday and that means marching band!

Here in Ohio - it was 95 on Tues and Wed for after school rehearsals. Yes in the 90's for only the 6th & 7th day all year!! This morning it is 58, breezy and cool. And isn't supposed to get much warmer all day. Gotta love Ohio weather.

Tonight my oldest ds plays his solo at any away game. Rain or shine I'll go to hear my boy.

Where are you headed tonight? Home or away game? When do competitions start for your band?

Away game for us tonight. I think DH and DS13 and I will probably skip this one. We are kind of worn out and have a big day tomorrow. We did watch the end of Thursday night rehearsal last night. SO much better than last week! They still have only about HALF of the show finished, makes me soooo nervous, but that is the way it always is.

Our first contest in next Saturday. Mr. Band Director came to us, the uniform ladies, and wants us to attach lights to the uniforms....so we have a week to get all that ready. We figured it out, now to do it, and now he thinks they need to be colored lights rather than white....so MORE work. Plus gloves are not in yet, and we still haven't gotten Shakos sorted and passed out. I will be living in the Band Closet next week!

Good luck to all Bands and football teams tonight!

Homecoming for us tonight. First home game on our updated turf field and remoldeled stadium. Band will do 3/4s of their show that they have ready before the game with props for the first time and full uniform minus shakos. It will be abt 95 degrees then.

My freshman ds is in the Homecoming court. So he will have wardrobe changes from band uniform to suit and tie and back to band uniform. This should be interesting

We have an away game tonight, but our band does not travel to away football games. I remember at the 8th grade parent meeting last spring they told us we are a competition band, not a band for football. They do the half time show at home games, but that is really it. They play the school song if the team makes a touchdown, but our team is so bad that is a rarity.

Our first competition is next Saturday.

That is interesting. Our band has always heavily supported the football team. We have gone to every away football game, play stand tunes throughout all games, etc. BUT...competitions are the main concern. This year, for the first time ever, we are skipping two away games! I'm sooo happy! :thumbsup2 The one is very far away and the night before our first competition. So the kids would get home around 2 and have to be back at the school at 7:30, for a FULL day at a competition. The second one is closer, but the night before our state competition. Last year many kids got sick, too little sleep, too much stress and too many germs in a short period of time! Hopefully this will help!

Away game for us tonight too. And this one is way too far away for me to be able to get home from work (an hour away), let the dog out, and drive another hour to the game. I'd have to leave work right now, lol. Not that I would mind that!! :thumbsup2

Tonight we play a team that is usually the only team we lose to every year... I SO want to see us beat them for once. A local news editor does a live play-by-play blog for the away games, so I will be glued to my computer tonight.

Our first competition is October 5th, a BoA Regional. Our first true BoA competition! Kind of nervous... We've always been such a UIL-focused band, more about precision than visuals. But new band director, new focus, and the show this year seems to have much more "movement" and pizazz, much more of a visual component than I've seen of them before. At least with the two movements I've seen so far. I'm excited to see the first competition!

Pembo, I am jealous beyond words at your 58 degrees... I can't even comprehend that in September, LOL. Can our band come march there in Ohio with y'all?? :goodvibes

I grew up in Indiana, but not Indianapolis. Our band was always playing throughout the games. I don't remember them traveling with the team though. So far, we have had two home football games, and the opposing teams have not brought their bands.

I have heard that our basketball pep band is really good and involved in the games. But, our basketball team tends to be really good, and bless their hears, our football team is not. We have a new coach, so hopefully, they will get better.

I am so excited to find a marching band + Disney-loving group of folks! :goodvibes

My DBF is a first year band teacher this year and I'm loving the atmosphere of football and marching band! Their first game was last week and it was so hot I got heat exhaustion from being there :headache:

It's actually cold today! I hope the rain stays away. Like I said before, it was 95 two days this week (very rare for this time of year), the poor kids were dying on the field. And the idiot director couldn't understand why they weren't rehearsing better?! Uh, maybe because it's hot out? I sympathize with all of you in the heat of TX, I can't imagine!

Please come visit with your band. I'd love to see some of those TX bands! :)

Our band goes to all football games. Our farthest away game is about 40 mins away. Now for competition we travel at least an hour every time. We got to 4 competitions. Our first one is the 28th.

5 of our band kids were in the homecoming court tonight!! Yay for popular band kids!

The bands did their shows before the game tonight. The visiting band was a smaller band from a small school. Our band is 200 members strong. Quite the difference in their shows! Our show has a lot of movement while playing. They performed 2 of their 4 songs tonight and sounded pretty darn good. Can't wait to see the rest of it come together.

Thursday night was first home game and the kids did okey. We don't travel to way games. Have no idea why. Kids have practice Saturday because of missing practice on Thursday. First compaction is next Saturday. Hoping the are ready.

Our football team WON! 44-14! To a team that usually slaughters us! The other team has a tiny band...maybe 30 kids, including Drum Line. They did not perform a show at all. They were surprisingly loud doing their Stand Tunes though, and sounded pretty great! Our band marched at half time and was soooo much better than last week!!! Yay! Unfortunately, they still have less than half of the show complete, but at least that part looks good.

I thought next Saturday was our first competition, but we have one more week. Next weekend is Homecoming. We also have several Band kids on the Court! I hope one, or two get King and Queen! Our Homecoming parade is Thursday evening, so they will have rehearsal Tuesday night, to make up for the missed rehearsal Thursday. First time to wear uniforms Friday night, so my uniform buddy and I will be busy this week!

Have a great weekend!
Go Band!

Football team won again. 2-1 on the season. :cool1:

It was middle school band night, so may of the middle school concert band students were in the stands with the high school band. They played a few stand songs out on the field at half time and then the high school played it's show after the game.

Thursday night was our first football game. There were warning for possibly heavy storms moving through. They didn't cancel the game beforehand. So everyone gets to the game, they start playing and the lightening comes. Those poor kids trying to bring everything back up to the school. They got stuck in the poor raining, then spend 40 minutes wiping down the instruments. They didn't find out the game was rescheduled for last night until late in the day, so no band for the game. Not a good start to the season. :lmao: Next Friday is our homecoming. Hopefully the weather will cooperate and I'll finally get to see the show, or at least what they have learned of it so far. :duck:

Hi! Sophomore clarinet mom here :) I met KatyBelle at a competition last year. KatyBelle- my inbox is full and I can't figure out how to delete from this iPad thingy... So yes, still in it, but not spending much time on the dis lately- started night school and it is taking more of my time than I thought :(

We have competitions in St Louis, Tulsa, and Blue Springs- would live to see you or any other dis friend that's going!

Wow, our band travels to all of the away games and we have some pretty far away this year. Our schedule is killing us this year. We have 3 away games in a row. Last week's game was 3 hours away & the same this week. We went to the game Friday, didn't get home until after 1am & then DD17 had to be back at the school at 5am for a debate tournament 2 1/2 hours away. I'm just praying no one gets sick from exhaustion!

The band is getting new uniforms this year. They are in but now all the kids need to be fitted so they probably won't get to use them until next week's game. The drum majors wore theirs this past week so we got to see the style and the band kids will have the same uniform but the colors will be reversed.

We don't have our first competition until Oct.19th which is a UIL event.
