2013 Destash- this is the year!

I have the master bathroom almost done. Just a few things left on the counter that I had to leave until after the kids' evening activities, but I'm going to try to finish it up tonight. I got rid of 1 1/2 kitchen size garbage bags of old crusty styling products and stuff, a Disney princess caboodles I cleaned up to give to my niece, and a few things for the rummage sale. There are 2 large palstic storage baskets that I can clean up to store blankets or something that had just been full of junk.

I also am working on washing a couple hampers full of coats and stuff that were stuffed in a hamper when we cleaned the garage. I did 3 loads of that stuff today and have about 2 loads left. I'm going to take old hand towels and kitchen towels to the jr high for their outdoor ed camp, hang up the winter gear in the coat closet, and find a place to store all the clean folded blankets.
I did all the regular house cleaning on Saturday so I could concentrate on decluttering. I found in the past I would be working in 1 room decluttering and the rest of the house would go downhill in a hurry, so I'm going to make sure I take 1 day a week off from decluttering to make sure the regular chores get done too.

Sorry, I need to update the link, not sure why it's not working.

You can actually find the boxes at craft stores that carry Tim Holtz products.
I got mine at a scrap store but I believe Michael's carries them. I haven't been to ACMoore lately and I don't have a Hobby Lobby near me but you could check those places.

The really good thing about the boxes is the different sizes can be stacked if you need a bigger box and the inner boxes are removeable and can be moved around to get the sizes you need. To hold everything together you can either glue to boxes to each other our use Washi Tape. Also available at most craft stores.

I've been over at my grandma's cleaning since I left work today so no chance for decluttering, but we had a big weekend. Started at BF's house with his closets. He moved down to a basement room last year and never cleaned his upstairs closet. Between the two we got rid of a huge contractor bag of heinous clothes. The next day we went over to my house and started my closet. I got rid of two big bags of clothes and shoes and a smaller one of trash. I forgot to take a before picture but here is the pile of stuff I got rid of:

And here is my finished closet:

I still have to work on my dresser, but that's the easy part.
Yesterday I went through my sewing and crafting supplies and got it down to one bookshelf and storage cart.
We have 13 days before we leave for Disney (ee!) and before we go I hope to finish the following:
-Finish laundry (tshirts and jeans left) and declutter what's left
-Dresser
-Pack for Disney!

he has boxes and trays. The boxes are deeper.

We were posting at the same time earlier so I'm just seeing these posts! Great news having them locally! THANK YOU SOO MUCH!!!! :goodvibes

Dumped the magazine rack. It's a small organizer, but it had been stuffed full with Time magazines leading up to the election. Also had family magazines. We don't have any active subscriptions so these were all samples from the past 6 months. Out of all of them, I kept one page with a recipe. I can scan that into the computer.

A couple of coloring books had found their way into there. DS just started crayon-ing so I will move those to the craft room.

An empty space! Looks kind of lonely now....

I haven't had all that much time to work on decluttering this week, but I did get a little bit done. Last night while I was cooking dinner, I pulled out the step stool and started tossing out all of the cups on the top two shelves. Those were basically all the cups and water bottles you get at amusement parks and baseball games. We never use them, so in the garbage they went. And then I cleaned off the top of my fridge. I had a few boxes of cereal that were old or pretty much empty, so tossed those too. I ended up with one large bag of garbage between both of those.

I also went through some of my son's stuffed animals and tossed one large black garbage bag full. I got rid of some that had stains or holes. He has so many stuffed animals but won't let you toss any. I left the ones I know he'll notice, but most are in his closet, not his bed, so I doubt he'll notice those. I'm hoping if I toss a few every week or two, he won't notice and I can start to get rid of them.

Goals Accomplished So Far in 2013:
Decluttering All of the Christmas Decorations/ Got everything down to 1 large tote
DH and My Closet and Dressers: 5 bag of trashs; 7 large bags of clothing donated
Coat Closet: Got rid of old jackets and consolidated hats/gloves/scarves
DS's Bathroom Drawers and Cabinet: 1 bag of garbage removed
Kitchen: Organized container cupboard: 1 bag of garbage removed
Organized Cup Cupboard: 1 bag of garbage removed
DS's Room: One large bag of stuffed animals gone

I managed to do a little bit of decluttering yesterday and today.

Yesterday I needed to find the donation tax receipts for 2012 that weren't in their proper folder.

So I ended up searching a stack of papers in the game/piano room where I found them.

I also shredded a ton of papers and put the papers that were for husbands part time internet business in their proper folders on his desk.

So that's a stack of papers I didn't even realize were still hanging out around here taken care of.
I figure my husband must've put them in that room right before the inlaws showed up for Christmas after pulling the tax items out of their folder.

I also cleaned out and organized 2 kitchen cupboards, donating 4 pans and 6 plastic storage containers that were in them. It's amazing how much space there is now in those cupboards.

Today I deviated from my January plan and ended up cleaning off my side table in the bedroom. It was stacked so high with books and papers that they fell off today.

So I put the books I've read into the donate bag, shredded most of the papers except for 2 that I needed to keep just in case for warranties which I filed and now the side table is lovely.

So far I've got done:

Kitchen - 3 cupboards, one counter
Game room/Piano room/dining room: top of buffet which held that stack of papers
Master Bedroom: one side tabletop

I didn't get much done this week. I felt awful the beginning of the week. I still don't feel 100%, but feel better when I see a neat organized area.

I just spent 30 minutes straightening my basement and got a huge bag of trash together.

I finished my bedroom drawers. My nightstand drawers are now empty except for a book and 2 flashlights!

I went through our filing cabinet and another binder of papers and now have a huge pile to shred, plus all of the trash that is now gone. Hope to get that done tomorrow.

I also got rid of a couple of things in my closet to goodwill/trash.

I took a load of stuff to the consignment shop. I am starting to gather more for another trip in a week or so.

I hope to work on the basement a bit more this weekend, since it's warm. Also, work a bit on my closet.

I've been reading your post from the beginning & you have inspired me! I cleaned all the drawers, dresser tops, & closets in two bedroooms, & got rid 0f 2 bags of clothing & misc items. I cleaned the bathroom closet & under the sink, throwing out any outdated medications. Only got to a few kitchen drawers, but I think for 1 day I made a lot of progress and am very proud of myself. Would like to finish the kitchen this weekend, but with my hubby home, not sure how much I will get accomplished.

Everyone keep up the good work:woohoo:

The last couple of days haven't been very productive decluttering wise. My daughter and I went through two shelves of books in her room. We got rid of a few things and sent a few more to her little brother's room because they were too small for her. I got a few baby books out of my son's room too. Other than that not too much.

I have been focusing on using things up in the pantry and freezer this week. After cleaning that up, I found lots of things for meals and baking I'd forgotten about. So that's looking better.

Today I'm finishing my daughter's book shelf and going through our board games (which I realize I said I would do the other day, but it didn't happen).

Keep up the good work everyone. It's really inspiring and motivating to see what everyone else is getting done.

So I did not clean in the kitchen today. I wound up in the basement as I was behind in laundry. We have an awful habit of not bringing our hanging clothes back up to our closets. Now I always am carrying up clean clothes, every time I go down there - but no one else does. I also hate to iron, so those types of items get backlogged.

Last year I bought a steamer to try to better stay on top of ironing. So today I decided I would just drag all the dirty clothes downstairs, and steam through one dryer cycle. Well, once I brought the first load back to my closet, I started reordering my clothes. I did a HUGE clean out this summer, so today was just a touch up. I quickly saw items that I just have not worn. So as I carried up each subsequent load, I continued to weed out my closet. I had at least 10 more items that I purged today between the basement and my closet. The nice thing is I really got some laundry done too as I got in the mood and just kept GOING!

I am now going to exercise before the weather turns.

Hope everyone is having a productive weekend!

This is on my list to do this week as well. I'm pretty sure some of our games were missing pieces too (and I don't know why we didn't just throw them out when we realized it), so now I have to go through them all to make sure they have the pieces before donating them. I'm really dreading that.

DH and DS were watching a movie that I had no interest in last night, so I filled up a couple of totes with smaller toys that DS no longer plays with. If DH has a garage sale, he can sell them then. And if not, they can be donated. So for now, they are just sitting out in the garage. I also went through DSs shoes and baseball hats and tossed the ones that are yucky or the wrong size.

Keep up all the de-cluttering everyone!

Just dropped off a trunk load of stuff at goodwill. I know I could have sold some of the pieces, but it feels great to just have it out of my space.

I am working on old cards and pictures that I have in my closet. It is a work in progress. I have 2 boxes of cards left to do and one big box of pictures. I went through 3 boxes of cards and one box of pictures so far, so over half done. I have a huge bag of trash. I took the advice of another poster that posted about pictures. I have been getting rid of all the blurry ones, duplicates, and ones that I can't remember who they are. I had a bunch from college. I have gotten rid of a bunch. This was really good advice, I don't need all of them just hanging around.

Well, it was slow going today with everyone home & not feeling 100%, but I managed to power through 1/2 the master closet. 3 pages to donate, 1 to trash. Got 2 drawers condensed into 1 (so now have 1 empty), want to get through more drawers, then re-arrange them. Ideally, will have enough room to put the laundry AWAY every week (novel idea here!). Sad news today as ds good friend is going to be moving, but silver lining is that we will have company with the de-cluttering, so long as we don't "inherit" LOL!

I worked on the hall closet today. I took out 4 tubs one belongs to Me, Dh, misc and DD. I made everyone go through their tub and declutter it. We combined everything into just soap, razors, toothpaste q-tips etc. I now have one shelf on one side that is empty and the bottom shelf is 1/2 empty:cool1: I still need to tackle the top and bottom shelves. I had dd keep her curling iron and blow dyer in a tub in her room unless she declutters the front bathroom cabinet.

I also hit one small basket in my closet organizer. I got rid of pile of pills, recipets and papers to shredd.

Total tossed out 1 large black trash bag full of junk .

The plan was to go finish up but just had dinner, its cold and I'm now lazy. I have the heat turned up and I dont feel like getting up-lol!

I just went through my other box of pictures!

I am down to one box now. I would like to put them in order, but will save that for another day. That will be a good project when I am watching some tv.

It doesn't sound like much, but it was sure intimidating to me!

What are everyone's thoughts on cards? I have saved a ton of Hallmark cards that were given to my kids over the years. I got rid of a bunch of my old cards (wedding, etc.). That was so long ago. I just kept a few from my boys as they are writing their own names. I don't know if kids will really care if they have all their cards from b'day, easter, etc. I am tempted just to keep a few, but on the fence. My boys are 4 and 7, but they have accumulated a bunch already.

I also saved dd's birthday cards she get from her parties, vlentine cards from her and my dh, mother days cards. I'm also on the fence about saving or tossing. I might just keep a few of dd's bday party cards. The reason I started was when my mom died i had to go through her box. I was amazed of some of the cards and letters she had saved. She saved a letter from a sweet lady that would volunteer and read to me and the class when i was in 3rd grade, cards from my Dad(he left when i was 3) and it really warmed my heart to read those letters and cards.
