2013 Destash- this is the year!

Pretty productive today, but it is hard when you work all day & it really doesn't look it, kwim? Got receipt drawer under control, some were pushing 2 years old! Yikes! Most of Christmas is down & packed away (outside lights are buried under quite a bit of snow & will need to be dug out, dried & packed away. I did get 1/2 of yard done, so some progress but slow!) Going to try to keep pushing on tomorrow.

I didn't get rid of any clutter per say today, but I did do a few things that will help me rid myself of it quicker when I have the time. I organized all of the papers and bills on the counter and the bill sorter thing into keep/shred/garbage piles. Then I tried to make matches with my sons socks, keeping the extra socks off to the side. If the matches don't turn up in this weeks wash, in the garbage they go. And lastly, I put the stack of DVD's sitting by the player into their cases and put the cases onto the shelf. It's hard to get a lot done after working all day, but these small things will make it easier when I'm trying to purge on Sundays. Now I just have to shred the paperwork and grab the DVDs we don't watch off of the shelf, instead of wondering if the DVD is already in there :)

Keep up the good work everyone!!!

I bought an accordion file and labeled it with each month. When I get a receipt I just put it in under the current month. In January I sort through it and throw out all the receipts for things out of warranty.

Now I am trying to figure out the waffle iron. I like waffles. When I make them, I make quite a few extra and freeze them. But pancakes are faster...Should this become a "only when we go out to breakfast" item?

We have one I'm thinking the same thing about. I think we've used it once or twice.

I also have an extra crock pot that I should get rid of (I have a 2-4-6 quart one with 3 round crocks, and an oblong 4 quart one). I like the oblong shape, so I'm reluctant to part with it, but it does take up space....

-Christmas decorations and put away what we keep (thanks to Bernard and Miss Bianca for your tips from Destash 2012 thread)
-

Ok, I just read through all the pages and didn't see this about Christmas decorations. Help please! Can anyone point me to it? TIA SO MUCH!

I'm looking!!! I know I actually went through the Christmas stuff over summer, so I'm searching now.

Christmas purging tips from 2012

Ornaments were hard for me too but the kids each have a tote of ornaments they get from us and the grands. But what I did was tossed anything that hadn't been used in years. That was actually easier than I thought it would be. I then divided up the ornaments from our first tree and put them in the kids totes.
Antique ornaments are going into a holiday display.

Tim Holtz makes these configuration boxes and I plan to put FIL and MIL's childhood ornaments in these. One for each kid

http://shirleyhalldesigns.blogspot.c...gurations.html

We also have a tree we only use at Disney so all of those ornaments are in a tote.

I actually started with the easier stuff. Messed up bags, boxes, tissue, wrapping paper. Etc. That helped get things moving.

Photo purging tips from 2012

Photos are my downfall. A few things, first go through the photos quickly.
Step 1 - get rid of any photos of people you don't know or don't have means to identify.
Step 2 - Purge all blurry photos
Step 3 - Purge duplicates
Step 4 -Make piles to mail to family and friends of their kids/family/etc.
Step 5 - Sort into some sort of categories. I have most photos sorted chronologically but I also have sections for each kid. Most of these are either pictures that I don't know the date of or are extras of school pics, photo sessions, etc.
Negatives go into a binder with negative sleeves.
If you have or are doing digital backups or make sure you have multiple back ups. Websites crash or go out of business, iClouds can be compromised, discs can get scratched, hard drives can fail. I have a binder of CD's at mom's house, I have a binder of CD's here, I have an external hard drive and all of my pics on my laptop.
I accidentally deleted my iPhoto once losing 30,000+ pics. It took 3 days but DH was able to recover 95% of my pics. I have done multiple back ups of everything now.

As for albums:
I have a school album for each kid. Each 2 page layout has a fall and spring picture, class picture, report card and either a hand writing sample, a favorite project or a drawing.
They each have a sports album, in chronological order.
Disney albums are by trip but each trip typically takes up 2 albums so I am switching to Digital for those going forward.
The rest I do an album a year all chronological. I started following Becky Higgins Project 365 but now she is doing Project life. I use Creative Memories picfolio albums because I can slide the pics in, journal a little and it's done.
These I plan to do digitally in the future as well because the albums take up a lot of room.

DVD organization from 2012

Here is my solution to DVD's and CD's if anyone is interested.

We don't buy DVD's and CD's much anymore, we buy almost everything digitally.
The background is the stacks of DVD boxes(the before). The foreground are boxes we bought at Target (the after). They have double sided sleeves in them to house the movies.
The last box has tons of room for growth and we bought 2 more boxes for CD's but one is only 1/2 full.
I don't think the boxes are available anymore but I'm sure there is something similar out there.

We bought the double sided sleeve containers at Staples years ago. We have one for Disney DVD, Non Disney DVDs then one for each gaming system. The cases are out the door as soon as they are opened. HUGE space saver.

We also bought a set of ottomans that have storage inside them. Those take care of all the living room clutter, phone books, blankets misc paper files, magazines, etc. Keeps clutter of the end tables.

Ha ha. Someone has a sense of humor. I told my husband that we should do the file box this weekend. He agreed the shredder is hungry.

FedEx just rang the doorbell with a large box. Full of paper!:rotfl2: It's his medical records that we need to carry on to the VA.

LOL keep them in the box!!! At least you don't have to keep those right? The VA should take them.

I prefer the oblong crockpot since it holds pieces of meat. We use ours 3 times a week so it was allowed to move onto the counter.

If you aren't using it except for special occasions, then maybe it should go to a lending closet. Mentioned to a friend this morning about the waffle maker and she got all excited about it. Thinking I will make a bunch of waffles and then gift it to her house. She's also moving in a few month so I don't think she should take in more items, but she said she was thinking of purchasing one.

Monday night my daughter and I spent 10 minutes going through her toy box. She got rid of about four toys, which is an improvement. We did get a small grocery bag of trash out of her room too. Baby steps. I may see if I can get her to spend 10 more minutes with me tonight working on her book shelves.

Tuesdays are really busy for us, but I did manage to get a few toys from my son's room that he doesn't play with anymore. with all his things from Christmas, he really needed some space. Plus his birthday is in February so I know he'll end up with more then.

I haven't done any decluttering yet today, but dinner is in the crock pot, I have laundry going and one bathroom cleaned so I've been busy.

I think next I'll go through our board games. I can think of at least two off the top of my head that we've never played.

DH is boxing up our skype camera and accesories to ship to my mom. We have laptops now so don't need the camera. It gets it out of our house plus my mom can now connect with us via skype. I finally talked her into using it.

I love your photo tips! Sometimes I just freeze up at the thought of organizing it all. Also, thank you so much for the tip on the Tim Holtz configuration boxes. I have some little vintage doo dads and cards that I wasn't sure how to display. These boxes are perfect! So cute and creative. I love them! :goodvibes
