2012 Marathon?

Aargh! I'm so torn.

Part of me really wants to make Disney my first FULL marathon and do it in 2012 (like it will be my first HALF in 2011)...

BUT

I also really, really want to do NYC! I'd love to do it in the year I turn 40, which will be 2011 (ok, techically January 2012 meets that requirement for a 12-month period since the birthday is in July), and I've entered the lottery. I know my odds are slim since I live in NYC (yes, really...you have a better chance of getting picked in the "lottery" if you're from out of town). So I've figured I'll just do a charity for 2011 to run it. (Thanks to NY Road Runners and their 9+1 program (run 9 of their qualifying races and volunteer at 1) I'll have guaranteed entry in 2012...but I'll be 41 by that point. Not that that means I can't run it, but the magic of doing it in my 40th year won't be there.)

But the more I think about it, I like the symmetry of Disney being the first half AND the first full.

I don't know what to do!!!!!!!!!

Why not run both? Run New York in November since it's your hometown race and one of the "Big Five" marathons, rest for a few weeks, and then run Disney in January for the magic and the characters. :)

That's a HUGE financial commitment, especially if she's raising $3000 or more for charity in NYC.

Yeah, what she said! Plus there's the whole "First Full" decision. Oh well...not like I'll know for sure I didn't get the NYC lottery until April (March? Who knows the way the NYC Half lottery's been). Plenty of pondering time.

For what it's worth, NYC in November is often warmer than Disney in January. Don't know if that makes a difference.

I vote for doing them both. I ran NYC and Disney in my 50th bday year. In 2011 I am doing NYC and Disney for my 60th bday year. Believe me, it is easier to train for NYC, and then continue the training for Disney. You can use NYC as a training run. It's a great experience, and a difficult course.

Thanks for the advice Jim! Hopefully I'll get in via the lottery (stranger things have happened...they have to need a certain number of slower people, right?) for NYC and then won't have to worry about raising charity money!

Thank you for the hotel information, I have stayed at Pop before and loved it, but I am thinking getting a hotel closer to a monorail will be the best location. Thanks for all the advice! It was great.

I'm another couch potato who is getting up and moving. The 2012 Princess Half Marathon is my goal! I couldn't walk a 1/2 marathon right now - sad, I know.

Well, I am with everyone else. I will be training for 2012, but the Goofy. The reason is my kids said I have done the half 2x and full 1x, so you should do the Goofy. :scared1: I do anything for my kids so I am going to get ready for the Goofy in 2012.

Nothing sad about not being able to do one now. If it wasn't hard work, it wouldn't be an accomplishment. Look around for a trainging plan. Most start with couch to 5k and then graduate to a Bingham, Higdon or Gallowway plan for the half. 14 months is plenty of time to get there. You should be able to make it by Disneyland or Wine&Dine if you want to.

Subscribing to this thread now . . . I'm hoping to run the 2012 Half-Marathon, assuming that my finances can take it, and that my IT band cooperates! I'm a fairly novice runner, having participated in a couple 5ks in recent years, and irritatingly injury-prone (perhaps that comes with middle-age).

I'm trying to figure out my budget for the trip, and hope someone can clue me in on one detail in particular: Is any level of park admission usually included in registration for the Half Marathon, for the day of the race itself?

Assuming you mean the January half the short answer is no, no pass help for the half runner. The does not mean that WDW will not push the Marathon Monday concept to the half in 2011.

If you are speak about the Princess half, then yes there is a discounted pass plan. Look at the website as the 2011 registration opens for details, assuming they continue the program.

Thanks, yes I meant the January Half.

That's surprising that runners can't even get into the parks on the same day as the race. But what the heck, this probably builds my case for an AP (since I've got another short trip that falls within the same 365-day period).
