2011 Super Goofs

I'm running a' plenty, just not posting much. The arguments over the Tink race really bummed me out, so I stopped posting so much (or, at least, I tried to cut back) - I was getting to the point where I could not easily be happy just because other people were out there running.

The Kalamazoo marathon is in a couple of days - my legs aren't fully recovered from Illinois last weekend, but I should be able to finish the course on Sunday without too much of a problem. And then two weeks of relative rest before the CRUD Ultra.

Happy Mother's Day to all the moms!

We had a wonderful Mother's Day Fun Run this morning. There was a 1/2 mile walk/run followed by a 5K. The weather was beautiful! Sunny, upper 50's with a nice breeze. My husband and DS did the 1/2 mile walk. DS ran almost the whole way, which is pretty impressive having just turned 2 yesterday! I was very proud! Then they played on the beach while I did the 5K. It was my first race since the Princess. I really enjoyed myself! It was nice to be able to participate as a family.

My husband was rather humerous the rest of the day...he kept telling people he ran a 1/2 marathon rather than a 1/2 mile! Not quite the same thing!

Kalamazoo marathon is done. I'll probably write the race report tomorrow, but I finished in the time I expected, and, more importantly, had a lot of fun. It also means that I can apply to Marathon Maniacs - albeit as the lowest possible membership level.

Ashleigh It must have been adorable watchng your son run!

Rich Congrats on Kalamazoo. Hope it wasn't too warm---but I am glad we had a nice day!

So I spent mother's day preparing a meal for 2 of my DH's work colleagues from Italy. No rest for the weary.....and I WAS tired from my miserable 8 mile run. Boy, it was just a real slow-moving stonker. Not sure why. Guess it's just one of those things.

Need to head off to the gym and swim today......why do I dread it so! (Probably 'cause I always feel out of breath while I'm doing it!)

Nah, it wasn't that bad. I got sunburned pretty well though! I finished before the beer tent opened, so I was spared the worst of the heat. It was definitely a reminder of how much I had gotten used to running in nice, cool weather.

Some runs are just slogs. For one reason or another, they are just harder than they should be. Heck, sometimes a race that should be easy just turns into a long slog that just goes on and on and on.

Good luck with the swim; hope it goes well.

RICH~ Congratulations on finishing the Inaugural Kalamazoo Marathon. It was a great day! Were you the one wearing a Disney Marathon shirt? My family and I were on the sidelines by mile 15 cheering for the race.

I only saw the back of the shirt, but my kids were like "MOM MOM that guy is wearing a Disney Marathon shirt! :)"

Nope. I talked with a 50-stater wearing a Disney marathon shirt afterwards, but I was in a white shirt, with a red & white cap. I'm trying to place where 15 miles on the course was, but regardless - thanks for being out there. I think the K'zoo marathon had some of the best spectator support that I have ever seen, and certainly the best* of any "small" marathon that I have run.

* Okay, the Zoom Yah-Yah might have it beat, but that's only because it is 150 laps on a track, and everyone gets their own personal scorekeeper (from the St Olaf girls track team) who also acts as a cheerleader.

Congrats, and welcome to the Insane Asylum from #3577! I'm also "just" a bronze level, but I might go for 6 in 6 months this fall/winter. See what being a Maniac will do to you?

Hello Goofs!

Its been a crazy couple of weeks and only a few more weeks until I have a high school junior in my house!!! Time is flying by.

I spent 5 days at the end of April/beginning of May with my daughter's high school chorus at a competition in Gatlinburg, TN. We were just south of the tornadoes that came through the Atlanta area and drove through some terrible damage. On a more positive note, we came home with 4 1st place trophies, one that is over 5 feet tall!!! It was a long time to be on a bus and be forced to eat fast food when we stopped (which I don't eat) but so worth it for the kids!!! Did a 5K the weekend we came back and crossed the finish line at my usual, just over 40 minutes, time. Someday I will break the 40 minute mark!!

Hope everyone is doing great and injury free. Anyone have their fall race schedule set yet?

Send me some Pixie dust please, Goofs. I am totally out of commission (and in constant pain) from what the PT says is perhaps a herniated disk in my neck/back causing pain in my back/shoulder that radiates into my entire right arm. I have been mostly horizontal fro the last week, and no drugs seem to be taking the edge off, Back to PT again today, and if no relief, I am going to demand an Xray or MRI to hopefully get a more conclusive answer (not that I don't believe PT, but PT and doctor had different diagnoses)

Anyway, my "vertical time" limit has been reached. Gotta go lie down.

Maura

Oh no, Maura! I hate that you're in pain. Loads of pixie dust for a speedy recovery!

Oh Maura, that stinks. Prayers, pixiew dust, and children's chewable morphine are headed your way. Well, the first two, anyway.

I am so sorry- GET THE MRI! Perhaps a steroid taper? You need someone who specializes in sports medicine (just suggestions)

Maura - any updates?

I'm still recovering from the CRUD ultra - 8 hours, 31.5 miles, and over a mile of elevation change in each direction. This week, and probably most of next, I am keeping my daily runs to no more than 3 miles (and so far, I haven't even gone that far), and slow (not that I can run fast yet either!)

I am about 75% certain that I am going to try a 50-miler this fall, but I'm still wavering. That's a heck of a lot of distance to cover on foot. I'm pretty sure that I can do it, but the thought gives me butterflies. The good news is that the race is a veritable bargain, at a mere $1 per mile. :lmao:

No great improvement. 2nd week of therapy complete. Seems that you have to go through a whole month before anyone wants to look deeper. "It takes time" is something that I hear a lot. And I'm a very impatient person.

I have some less painful and more painful moments. I have gone back to the gym to do some pool exercises--mainly just floating and kick sets. Something to keep me moving. I just want to get back to normal.

Maura

Hi Goofs! I hope everyone is enjoying their long weekend. Today we finished building Colby's swingset that we got him for his birthday. He loves it!!

I am not always the most patient person either. I hope your recovery continues to go how you want it to.

Hey Goofs....resurrecting this thread from page 2!

So I am making a slow recovery. I feel like I am back to 80% or so, meaning I still have some pain/discomfort and a loss of strength in my right arm/shoulder area. But at least it seems to be trending upward. I go back for a re-check next week and I am going to ask about running.

I have been largely inactive except for PT exercises and some sessions in the pool. The pool has been okay, since I can float in neutral spine/neck position and do kick sets or even work on some swim drills.

I assume since it's so quiet that everyone is out running, walking & otherwise enjoying summer. Another scorcher here today....90+.

Maura

Still running, mostly loving it. Kid sister had her baby last week - a premie (5 weeks), so I went up to help for a few days. I don't know if it is because the runners in my area know me, or what, but around here, it's smile, wave, say "Hi," whatever. In her Chicago suburb, it was me waving, and them grunting at me in suspicion. :confused3 ;)

Hi there, Goofs. Is everyone experiencing a heat wave? I'm sure it's nice and cool somewhere, but definitely not in Alabama. Getting an early start seems to help, but it messes with my sleep schedule. Case in point: I'm wide awake now and trying to figure out what to do with myself since I'll be hitting the trail in only two hours.
Maura, I'm sorry to hear how long it's taking, but glad to hear that you are recovering. Pixie dust for the journey ahead!
Rich, congrats on the birth of your niece/nephew(?). I hope all is well. Thanks for the warning about Chicago runners. Birmingham is a waving runner city, so I will need to remember to wave with caution when running elsewhere. There was a funny article in Runner's World a year or two ago about whether or not to wave, and your anecdote reminded me of that.
