2011 Super Goofs

Hiya Goofs! I'm back! And found you just before we change threads again. I seem to get lost every month.

January has been good. I'm training for my first Half and then will train for my first sprint Tri! I'll finally figure out how to tally up my miles because I'm actually keeping track of every run now!

Have a great day!
Dawn

Hey Goofs!

This week I finally did a 10 mile long run. It was my first double digit run since the wine & dine half in October! Unfortunately, I had to run it on the treadmill, but it looks like that is probably the way it's going to be for the next few weeks, as temps are falling again in this area. I have a big fear of slipping on ice and injuring myself. Only 3 more long runs until the Princess.

Luckily, I was able to get outside for a quick 3 miles yesterday. It felt good, but I was certainly reminded that running outdoors is very different than the TM. I'm expecting that the upcoming half marathon will be more challenging than my first half due to training conditions. Oh well.

I hope everyone's training is going well! Stay warm!

Maura, I'm sorry to hear about your MIL and hope that your family is coping well.

Hi all,

Thanks for the condolences. We had a brief trip to Pittsburgh and back by Saturday. I think it went pretty well--as these kind of things go. Fortunately, just 2 siblings and the arrangements were already made.

Forgot I had to do tax training Sunday morning and so planned to do LR today. Aint gonna happen. I feel crummy (thanks DH!) Tomorrow pm we get the beginnings of a storm, so I may just skip that LR run this week. And I'm also to the point where I feel okay about that.

Dawn No thread changing this year! Just one continuous one, so that should help.

Nicky Anyone who can do 10 on a TM is an Ironman in my book! I understand your concerns, though. I went through the same thing when I trained for the Disney races.

Looks like we better get the shovels ready and the groceries stocked. I see now we're supposed to get 10-15". Still less than my family north of Boston--they're supposed to get 15-20! One of my sister called to vent yesterday. There's just no place to put the snow.

Hello Goofs!

I've been reading but haven't had time to post, lots going on here.

Maura, so sorry to hear about your MIL. Glad you had a safe trip and hope your husband is doing as well as can be expected.

My husband decided he wants to do the ESPN 5K with me this year so I signed us both up. This will be his first ever so we will be walking in the back of the pack but just want to cross that finish line!

I've been signed up for the Princess 1/2 since just before Halloween I think (before the price went up again) and just decided to also do the Princess 5K. A friend that I've known for over 15 years was recently diagnosed with breast cancer and started chemo today so I am having a shirt made with her name on it and doing the 5K in her honor.

Hello to all the new posters, hello to the posters we haven't seen in a while and hello to the regular posters!!! As Maura already said, we are just going to have one thread for the year so no one gets lost each month!

Stay warm and be safe to everyone expecting snow and ice in the next few days. I won't tell you what our high was today near Disney.

Good evening, Goofs! Hope everyone is doing well.

Maura-Glad everything went well and you had decent weather for your drive. Sometimes life gets in the way of those long runs. We are supposed to get the same storm you are, up to 10 inches as well.

Nicky-I agree with Maura...I can't go much longer than 4 miles on the TM. I will run outside in just about any weather to avoid the TM!! I'm doing the Princess as well. See you in less than 4 weeks!

Suzanne-Good to 'see' you again! Make sure you keep those nice temps and weather for the Princess weekend. I am soooo looking forward to a break from the cold and snow!!!

Saturday was cold, windy and snowy for my 4 mile run, but Sunday was beautiful for my 8 miles! I even got a little sun on my nose and cheeks! I am not going to get up to 10 miles like I wanted to before the Princess, but I am feeling very well prepared. My 8 miles on Sunday felt great and I was able to do some hills. I love my Nathan Speedbelt and it has been working well. I have also been trying some different 'feuls' during my runs. I have tried Cliff bars and Pretzel M&Ms. Both have worked well. I'm starting to make lists for our trip! That means we are getting close!

I hope everyone is healthy and that those of you in the north aren't too snowed in. I'm recovering from a cold that really took a lot out of me. Spent 90% of the day in bed Friday and Saturday... and then did a 10-miler on Sunday because, well, I just don't have very good judgment! In my defense, Sunday's run was a group preview run along the Mercedes Marathon course. DH, RP (running partner) and I took it super slow and cut as many miles as we could while still getting a good feel for the course. Luckily RP has done the half many times and it's a double-loop course, so she can let me know what's coming up along the way.

The Mercedes has a 6-hour limit, so my plan is to pace RP to a new PR (current PR is just a few minutes over 6:00). Once we have a successful Mercedes finish under our belts, we plan to register for the Snickers Marathon in March. Yup, three marathons in under 90 days just so we can be "official" Marathon Maniacs rather than just the Goofy Girls we are now! :cheer2:

Kim I must have gotten your cold. It's been with me since Sunday and isn't gone yet.

Suzanne That is so nice of you to do the 5k for your friend. I hope she makes it through chemo as well as she can.

Ashleigh Sounds like your training is wrapping up well. Soon you'll be doing Princess!

My normal Tuesday speed work was tossed and I barely managed to run 3 miles at a pace which I never run (it was that slow). I'm supposed to run today, but I just don't think I can do it. I'm just hoping this is gone by Sunday. I have GOT to do my LR (20). Trying not to stress out in advance.

So we got about 8" of snow, I think. Not as bad as forecast. At least I got out to shovel a little of it (which I like to do in small quantities)

Stay warm all

Maura

Happy February Super Goofs!

Well thanks to the 100 day challenge I logged 41 miles for the month of January! My most mileage EVER:thumbsup2

I'm still training for a local 1/2 in May, not sure I'm going to do it though since it has a 15mpm time limit and I am SLOW! I run/walk about 14-14:30mpm and really like the cushion Disney gives me of 16mpm. (I know it's a mental thing :))

I'll decide as race day gets closer and will continue to train regardless.

Hope everyone is having a great 2011 and staying warm! We got a little over a foot of snow yesterday, but the sun is out today and the Ground hog did not see his shadow so Spring must be just around the corner;):rotfl2:

Bettina Congratulations on having a milage PR. Good luck with the local half if you decide to do it.

Maura, Bettina ..etc Ya'll rock for making time to consistently running in the snow. Once it falls below the high 20s I head for the treadmill.

Kim Wow 3 marathons in less than 90 days. Thats really impressive. I hope you're getting good bling.

Suzanne That's awesome that your running the 5k with your friend before chemo. I walked a lot with my wife before she started chemo and I think it really helped her to have a higher energy level as she went through treatment.

This week I started my training plan for the flying pirate 1/2 in April, so its a relatively low milage week. Hopefully I'll manage to make it through this training plan relatively injury free.

Heya Goofs, I'm back from vacation and finally getting caught up with life again! I ran the Buffalo Run Half Marathon on Catalina Island on 1/22. They billed it as "The Ultimate Trail Run" and they weren't kidding. It was a blast but easily the most difficult race I've ever run. The elevation chart was very misleading as to how tough it would be. The first five miles were a constant climb from sea level to about 1600', including an 800' gain between miles three and four. I had been training for hills the last two months but I had to start walking after a mile as it started getting even steeper. Just after the five mile marker, there was a arrow pointing downward indicating the downhills would begin. They only lasted a short time and then it was back up hill for a couple more miles!

I ended up finishing about 43 minutes slower than my last half but this race was much more about the beautiful scenery. I stopped for pictures quite a few times as the views of the mountains and Pacific were so breathtaking from up there.

I had a couple of celebrity sightings. Flea, the bassist for the Red Hot Chili Peppers ran it. He was a very nice, talkative guy. He said it was his first race. I couldn't believe how fast he was. He finished a full hour ahead of me! I also couldn't believe he did it in Vibrams. I even felt some of the rocks through my Nikes so he must have really felt them.

I also saw George Lopez driving a golf cart with an older lady. He was leaving a driveway in the first mile and looked very annoyed that he couldn't move his cart because a crowd of runners was blocking the tiny street.

The ferry ride over and back was nice and relaxing and the best way I've ever gotten to a race. I saw a lot of dolphins on the way over which was neat.

The day after, we took the Wonder on her inaugural Mexican Riviera sailing. We had an amazing time. The best news is I only gained two pounds! The least I've ever gained on a cruise was six pounds so I was very happy. I managed four runs around deck 4 and only took the stairs so I think this all helped.

We came back to some colds and really bad coughs so I haven't been able to exercise since Tuesday. Hopefully I feel a lot better by morning as I have a 12-mile training run coming up tomorrow.

I hope everyone is doing well. Maura, I'm so sorry about your loss. Take care!

Hiya Goofs,
Just finished a half-marathon worth of long, slow run. Sub 2-hours, and (thanks to our wonky treadmill), uphill all the way. About caught up to where I need to be in my training for the Illinois Marathon.

Everyone seems like they are getting their runs in, considering the weather we have been seeing!

Steve-Your race sounds nice. Good scenery always helps! Glad you had fun on your cruise and did not gain too much weight!

Rich-Wow! I'm impressed...I go to any means necessary to avoid running my long runs on the TM. Good for you!

Kim-Good luck in your upcoming races! Hope you are feeling better.

I cut my last 'long' run short today because road conditions were just terrible from our ice storm earlier this week combined with about 4-6 inches of new snow last night. So instead of doing 9, I only did 5. I kept slipping and my footing was uneven. My left knee started bothering me, so I decided it was better to cut it short than risk getting hurt this close to the Princess! I cannot believe it is 3 weeks away! I have started my list making and will probably start packing this week, since we have no need for shorts, capris or t-shirts right now!

Hi Goofs,
Just checking in to see how everyone is doing, and to complain that I hate doing Yasso 800s.

Hey Goofs,

I am really struggling with my training. Between missing some time, having a lousy cold for the last week and a half, I have now injured my IT band after doing 18 miserable miles in the snow on Sunday. I am trying to stay in the present and talk myself down.

Heading to FL on Friday. Haven''t signed up for any race but still hope to do 13 assuming I can deal with my IT band by then. I sure was happy to have booked an inexpensive weekend break from winter--now I'd just as soon stay home and climb under the covers.

Maura

Hope everyone is staying warm! My flower bushes in the front yard think its spring and are starting to bloom, maybe they know something I don't!!

Nice 4 1/2 mile walk today around Fort Wilderness.

Maura, are you staying on property?

Anyone ever put together a 5K? The chorus boosters for my daughters' high school is in the beginning stages of planning an event for the fall. All ideas and help is appreciated!!!

Maura - you're running Boston, right? I would think about taking a few days off (or really easy), and giving your IT band some time to heal up. You won't really lose anything by skipping a 13-mile run.

Suzanne - Can't say that I have ever organized a race. Good luck, and let us know how it goes along the way.

Nothing much new here. I am remember why I hated running intervals, hills and long runs every week. Bleh. Would be better if I could get a full nights sleep, but DD has been having nightmares, so I spend several hours a night semi-awake on her bed. It's not the best of habits, but I have been popping in a Disney film every day after lunch so that I can nap on the couch while she watches it.

Maura, loads of pixie dust for your IT band. :wizard: Hope you're better soon!

I'll also be in Florida next week, arriving 2/16. I might try and run around Boardwalk and Y&BC while I'm there, but since I have the Mercedes Marathon on 2/13 :scared1:, I'm not sure when I'll be ready to attempt that recovery run.

Suzanne, how cool to organize a race! Wish I had some suggestions, but all I can do is wish you luck.

Rich, I hope your daughter's nightmares come to an end soon. That's no fun at all. I'm a big advocate of the "Disney movie nap" myself; I hope it helps you stay somewhat functional despite the sleep deprivation.

Ashleigh and any other Princess runners, I am SO jealous and I know you're going to have a great time! Wish I was running it this year. I just can't justify going since I have a work WDW trip 2 weeks before and a family DCL/WDW trip 2 weeks after, so it's just not in the cards for me this time.

Steve, thanks for the race report. Too funny about George Lopez. Glad to hear you had a MAGICal time on your cruise!

Ryan, a pirate race sounds like the next best thing to a Disney race! Best of luck with your training plan.

Bettina, congrats on your mileage. I say give your local race a shot. Don't forget that "race day magic" will probably keep you at a slightly faster than usual pace. Since your training pace is below 15 mpm, I'm sure you'll do fine on race day.

Hi Goofs,

back from my weekend trip to Florida. Was not looking forward to it, but it turned out great. Spent a nice day Friday visiting a museum in Winter Park and eating lunch at a nice restaurant.

Saturday ran the Orlando Extreme Half marathon. I had been almost dreading running, but am happy to say that my IT band didn't bother me at all--either it healed or my crude KT Tape job helped. The race was small, which was fine, and off-road in the Orlando Wetlands Preserve. It was nice, and since it was small, I ended up winning my age group. Finished under 2 hours, but my Garmin measured 13.44 miles. Took a trip over to Merritt Island to see the birds (some), gators (none) and manatees (also none)

Sunday I walked around the Boardwalk, sat out on the beach by Grand Floridian (now sporting a sunburn) and had a nice Irish beer at happy hour down by Raglan Road.

So all in all, a refreshing break. And the temps may actually be warm here this week, so hoping for totally clear roads by the weekend.

Kim Hope your race went well. And you will get great temps this week in FL. My weather was cool, but at least the weekend was sunny.

Maura

Maura-Sounds like you had a nice little getaway! It got up to 45 here yesterday and with the sun, the roads were just wet when I went out for my afternoon run. It was beautiful and I did not have to wear my jacket! Sooooo nice! Glad to hear your IT behaved for you!

Kim-We will miss you at the Princess! But it sounds like you are getting your fill of Disney this spring! Hope your race went well this weekend!

Rich-Hope things are going better with your DD. My DS just got over an ear infection and a cold, so we had some sleepless nights. Gotta love those Disney movies for a much needed break! My DS is into the Toy Story trilogy right now!

Suzanne- How is the race planning coming? Was anyone able to offer you any insights? I hope so!

As I told Maura, it was beautiful for my longish run yesterday. The roads were all clear of snow and ice! I did a nice 7 miles and felt good. I am a little soar today, but nothing a little stretching didn't take care of. Every day I keep thinking, "I can't believe the race is 13 days away!" I have started packing and making my lists. I have my journal all made and ready to record every minute of our trip! I have even had a few dreams/nightmares about the race, including one where I missed the start!!! :sad1: I am sure we will have about 8 alarms set and we will not be sleeping that well anyways, so hopefully that won't come true!

Happy Running, All!

Hi Everyone!

With Valentine's weekend behind me, I can finally focus on our trip. I work in a restaurant and picked up extra shifts this weekend. Lots and lots of walking! We leave next Thursday (!), but will be spending a couple of days with my husband's grandmother before heading to Disney. I'm supposed to do one more long run of 13 miles tomorrow, but I'm not sure if I'm actually going to go the whole distance. I ran a 12 miler last week on the treadmill (the high was in the single digits that day and I'm not brave enough to venture out in that!) I just don't know if I have it in me for another movie date with the TM. Plus my legs are just so tired from all the extra walking these past few days in shoes not designed for all the mileage and on a floor not condusive to prolonged standing/walking. It probably didn't help that I was stubborn about keeping up with my regular running schedule, too. I guess I'll just see how I feel tomorrow and go from there.

Whew, I'm just a complainer today! Sorry about that! On the plus side, it was 45 degrees here yesterday and I was able to get outside for a nice little run. I've been completely baffled about what to wear for the Princess half because of the temperature. I've been going back and forth between shorts or long pants (no tutus for me!) and a tank top with arm sleeves or a layers with a long sleeved tee. Based on weather data from previous years, I'm guessing that it will be in the 40's, at least at the start. So, yesterday I decided to try out shorts and a long sleeved tee for my run. It was a little strange to be running alongside 6+ inches of snow while in shorts, but the good news is that I was completely comfortable throughout the run. Yay, the clothing hurdle is over!

Good weather to everyone and happy running!
