2011 Kentucky Derby Mini Marathon

I'm interested in that one. I found out about it at the Air Force Marathon expo. I did the Half Marathon there. Am always on the look out for flat courses. They told me this race was very flat. Since I live in Cincinnati, I thought this might be a good race to do. I am still trying to see how it fits into travel plans, other races, etc for the spring.

Race directors always say their course is flat, it's flatter than Flying Pig, but that's not saying much. I've run the half, there are some decent hills near the start, the full is bad because you get a hilly park and two trips over the ohio river.

DH Jim and I are in! It will be our 25th state! We are staying at the Hampton Inn downtown Louisville. Be there or be square!!

I forgot to say I am in. I also don't want to sound negative about the race. There is a lot of crowd support for big sections of the course. The parks are pretty (hilly, but pretty) and several different neighborhoods. The race starts with a bugler playing "Call to the post".
An excellent choice for walkers, since the course is open for 6 hours.

Pat This completes your half the states, right?

We are signed up for this one too. My only concern is that their website now states that they require a 15 minute per mile pace for the half. If you aren't maintaining that pace you will be dealing with roads being reopened and they don't guarentee that there will be course support. :worried:

The best pace I've had so far has been a 15:27 and that is on a flat course. I'm not sure what we are going to do.

Does anyone have any input or words of wisdom??

Thanks!

Susan

Yes, KY will complete my 'Half the States' quest. I won't be stopping, but will be slowing the travel pace - my first grandbaby is arriving next Feb and I will be staying (mostly) closer to home for awhile.

As far as the pace requirement - I checked last years results and there are tons of people who finished over 3.5hrs, quite a few over 4 hrs so I don't think there are any worries there. I've done a couple races where we had to take to the sidewalks, not a big deal - as long as the course is well-marked.

Right now I am also looking into doing the Flying Pig Half, but am concerned about the hills. So, I think that I will probably be doing one or the other of these two races.

Susan,
there are a ton of people who walk this race, last recorded half marathon finisher last year was a 5:56 clock,(5:40 Chip) and there were 180 over 4 hours, it's a common finish with the full, so there will be a lot of people finishing about the same time as you.
We had over 400 people from my work participate, and I didn't hear of any problems. Could always be different next year, but I would not worry about it.

Thank you everyone!!

The decision has been made and Kentucky here we come!! How could we not right? There is going to be a huge W.I.S.H. presence and we can't forget that it will be Pat and Jim's 25th state. Sounds like a party to me!

Thanks again for your input!

Congratulations on both the 25th state and grandchild. I'm still stuck at 8 because I keep repeating states.

I need Kentucky so depending on how the spring looks I am leaning towards this race now. I'm doing the National again in DC most likely as part of a road trip with friends but still need at least one more spring half. I might be able to hit this one and Buffalo and knock two states I need out.

Thanks Frank! I am so excited about the grandbaby! We are already planning his/her first WDW trip for Jan 2012 and his/her first race - the 5K now has a stroller division. How cool is that?

I hear you about repeating states, I've done that more than a few times. There are just so many awesome races and I can't resist the bling.

We are also registered for the inaugural RnR Providence RI on Aug 7th, and the inaugural RnR St Louis MO on Oct 23, 2011. Good thing I'm cutting back, huh?

Frank, you should come to this race if you need Kentucky. It is a big fun race with a lot of crowd support and you get to run through Churchill Downs.

This year there is a special opportunity for people from the coasts needing states.
Kentucky Derby Festival Half/Full is the last saturday in april. (We have a shorter race with a bigger crowd the first saturday in May.)
Cincinatti's Flying Pig is the 1st Sunday in May.

This year they are back to back April 30th/May 1st.
If you want to stay annother week, watch the Derby May 6th, then Sunday May 7th is the One America Half in Indianapolis.
