2010 Tri Thread

Charles, I just read a post by the IMTX RD on the Beginner Triathlete forums where he says "most likely 1 loop bike...run will be either 2 or 3 loops"

Keith also stated, "KEJ - 2010-06-25 7:15 PM Just back from Galveston. Just reading through all of the posts since I left the woodlands on Wed Yes, there will be more than 3 aid stations on the bike. They'll be every 10-12 miles. "

I had plotted a two loop lollipop course - now need to look at a 1 loop lollipop layout. I'll bet we get a crack at a few nice rollers

Sounds like you guys have busy racing schedules ahead of you! I have nothing in my future except a few 5Ks (fall is charity season) and I'm trying to find a 10K in my area sometime this fall.

I'm working on my running right now. Yesterday, I ran 2.3 miles in 22:50! That was a PR for me - it means I held onto 10min pace the whole time! (I'm usually 11-12min) That is my goal, to hold a 10min pace all the time. We'll see!

Good luck on your training - keep posting on how you're doing!

Alrighty then.... We have a couple signed up for the IM Texans. Way to go Richard and Charles.

Had a sprint today up in Englewood. Nice swim in the gulf - current at our backs! Pretty out and back bike ride up the coast with good shade along the way. Run was OK but overall a great event. Time was 1:17.

My swim is definitely getting much better. Had a great swim. So much better than my earlier races. Practice does help!

Mgsmom. Great run! Getting faster every day.

enjoy,
Duane

I'm doing my first real sprint tri in two weeks from today. I've done an indoor tri at Lifetime Fitness, but because I beat my DH in that tri, he says it is not a real tri. ;)

Anyway, I just read that we can wear Ipods for the run, which I didn't think would be allowed. If you were wearing your Ipod during the run, what songs would you be listening to to help keep you going? The first mile of the run is uphill.

signed,

A really nervous tri beginner!

Oh, I love using my ipod to run! I listen to a lot of Bon Jovi - and 80s hair music is particularly fun. "Kickstart My Heart" by Motley Crue comes to mind...

Once you put your head down in the water and start swimming, the rest will take care of itself. Good luck and enjoy!

BTW, will DH be doing this one and give you the chance to go 2 for 2!:rotfl:

LOL! I was a competitive swimmer so you would think that the swim would be the least of my worries. Nope! I hate swimming in open water - a fish might get me!

This is the Tri-for-the Cure so no men. Poor DH, he will have to live with the humiliation for a while still. :rotfl:

To be fair on our in-door tri, I beat him in points and only because of the swim. The results were based on points which were awarded for how far you swam, biked, and ran in the time frame. This is how it played out:

10 minute swim in a 25 meter pool: Me - 23 laps, DH - 15 (this is where I killed him as I received 96 out of 100 points for this).

30 minute bike on a spin bike: me 13.7 miles, DH 14.3 miles

20 minute run on a treadmill: I hit the stop button really hard and it cleared out my distance. The girl next to me said she saw that I was at 1.98 miles with a minute to go so they gave me the 2 miles. DH went 2.2 miles. I know I was over 2 miles when I hit the stop button, but since I screwed up I went with what they gave me.

So, while it wasn't really a tri, it was a great way to be introduced to the sport.

I used to RD those events. They were a blast.

monsterkitty - One of my fave new playlist songs is Break My Stride by Matthew WIlder. Stronger by Kanye West is a great one (but not PG rate IYKWIM). Hot & Cold by Pink (?), I Got a Feeling by Black EYed Peas. Have fun at your tri!!!!

5Ks - Yeah, they are shorter than our training runs, so we avoid them. Oh, yeah, we are too slow too. :p I think I have no motivation to try because my HS PR is 20:49. :scared1: Yeah, I'd have a hard time getting under 30 these days. Amazing what 20 years and 70 pounds will do.

Oh my, having a hard enough time thinking of my half IM in 11 days. :scared1::scared1::scared1:This full stuff is inconceivable!!!!!

Sorry I haven't been around. I tried a few times, but got timed out when I tried to reply. Ugh.

I'm in taper mode. Still enough workouts that I'm not going crazy, but my 10-mile ride Sunday seemed laughble. When did that happen?

DH adn I helped with a kids tri Saturday. SO fun! SO great that these kids can grow up and not have the mental tri hangup I did. Trainign for a multi-sport was beyond daunting. Swore I'd never do it for 4 years. Lokk what I missed out on!

Thanks for the music hints, everyone.

Now I have a few questions that you may laugh at while you answer:

1. I did a 1/2 mile ows yesterday on a marked course which is 75 meters long for each length. My time was 11 and 1/2 minutes but I was the only one in the water. There were waves caused by jet skis. How much time do you think I should add to this to set a realistic time goal for the swim? I would like to finish the swim under 15 minutes but I don't know if that is realistic with other swimmers on the course.

2. You can laugh at this one: I am blind without my glasses and I am terrified that I won't be able to find my bike after the swim. What tricks do you have to help you find your transition spot? There are 3000 in the Tri-for-the-Cure so there will be more than a few bike racks.

Thanks!

Hard to say. the jet ski wakes are not quite the same as bodies but I would guess your 15 minute time is safe. Find a comfortable spot mid-second thrid of the pack and on the outter edge of the course (i.e. if the course make a right turn at the bouy then line up left.) This will keep you in a little fresher water but you will need to site a little more to make sure you are not following feet headed off course.

The best trick is to walk the transition from the swim to your bike with after you set up transition. Count rows/sections to find your way close. From there you should be able to find you bike. You may want to go early to be one of the first ones through marking. If the transition is first come first serve you can then find an end spot that will make it even easier to find your bike.

monsterkitty - Some people tie balloons on the bike rack where they put their bike. It's inevitable that someone will have teh same on and you cannot go too huge, but it helps. I have a tough time. Always forget to count racks as I get out of the water. So, My dh had MIL make me a flag for my spot. A balloon would help, though. As for time, you will have adrenaline going for you race day. I think you are safe with your goal of 15 min. Good luck!

I try to count trees, lamp posts, etc. Much easier than counting bike racks at least if it is a large race. So, 3rd rack after the 2nd lamp post. It has worked so far but I haven't been with 3,000 other bikes either.

Go get em!
Duane

Monsterkitty- I tied a bandana right by my bike, but the racks were numbered at both of my tris so I could follow the numbers. I wasn't moving really fast in transition, so maybe I just had more time to look. ;) (I just had a flashback to standing in transition before the race started right by my bike killing time only to have someone look at me and say "uh, that's not your bike." I was about 4 bikes down and the only similarity was that they were both blue... humiliating.)

No running/biking today. I consider myself reasonably tough, but 100 plus degrees and trash day is a truly horrible combination. Besides.... I had to build Harry's new bike! Yep, I don't have a tri in my near future, but Harry has a munchkin tri (4 year old division) in August.

Has anyone ever done a midnight 5k? There's one on July 30 here (about a 5 minute drive from my house). It sounded like so much fun when I first saw the time, but now thinking about it is making me tired...

I'm excited to see everyone's schedules shaping up. So far I have a duathlon in August, a half in Jacksonville in October (the same weekend as the Wine and Dine so I can avoid the temptation), a sprint tri in October, and maybe a 25k in November (one of those schedule your visits with family around a race kind of things!)

Jen in GA

jen - Woo hoo for HArry! Does that make you coach now? ;) I have not done a midnight 5K, but have done ToT at 10:30 pm twice. Yuck! It was hard fro us, because even an easy day at WDW is exhausting. Yours would be shorter, but unless you get rid of teh kids for teh day and take long nap, you may be tired at the start. Still it's a fun adventure to try once. (yeah, no straight answers from here. :upsidedow)

Just saw this on Ironman.com. Our TX contingent had better decide quickly. Holy cow is that fast!

I was registered in the first few minutes it was open, so I am covered. A number of Ironman race fill quickly, but I have to think this is pretty good for a new race with no track record.
