2010 Tri Thread

Carrie and BigEyore good luck!! There's always another race to plan. Have fun.

Jen in GA, I'm off to a running store today too to get fitted for running shoes. I have one pair of gym shoes that I run, bike and use for work! I figure I mine as well have a good pair of running shoes so I don't end up with injuries.

I definitely have to agree that getting fit by a running store is a must. Finally did that for myself after several years of pain and ill-fitting shoes only to find out that I need a extra width shoes (4E actually) and now my shoes fit night and day different. It's amazing actually that I had waited so long to consult someone else on something I knew was wrong.

I'm headed out of town for a few days tomorrow - so if I don't post again:

GOOD LUCK BIGEEYORE AND CARRIE!!!

:cheer2::cheer2::cheer2:

How does the time go by so fast? I feel like I have not been through this thread in forever!

Good luck to those racing soon! I am doing the Y Freedom Tri for the second time in Pearland, TX this Sunday--after helping to move my daughter out of her college apartment on Saturday. I have felt so drained and behind all this week at work, since I was gone on business 4 days last week things just piled up in my absence.

There is some big news though, I went to the local township meeting last night where the World Triathlon Corporation formally asked for (and received!!) approval to conduct an Ironman event in my local area. :yay: The first Ironman Texas will go off May 21, 2011, with a swim start about 2.7 miles from my house. Registration opens at noon tomorrow and, though I am far from ready, I can already tell I am sucked into the excitement enough to register early for this one. I'm going to really have to look at my training, but I guess it works out for me as I am currently targeting an October HIM in my training schedule.

It's amazing actually that I had waited so long to consult someone else on something I knew was wrong.

Isn't that always teh way... ;)

Richard - OMG, I have a good fiedn in your area. That would be so cool! Well, except fro teh fact that I have no palns to do a full iron before I retire adn winter tri trianin in MI woul dnot be dfun......:sad2:

Racing tomorrow! Bike is racked in transition, packet is picked up, race band is on my wrist, packed my goody bag with a power bar, gel, shot blocks, and ibuprofen, and I am just hoping I can sleep tonight! I am just so excited and nervous. The race is huge - 1400 people yikes! Wave start based on age group and last name. I know I will get kicked and elbowed in the water - trying to mentally prepare for that so I don't panic during the swim.
If I come out in one piece I'll post a race report soon! Thanks everyone for the advice on this thread - it has really helped me prepare!

Y Freedom Tri

This was the first triathlon I have done a second time, so I was looking forward to seeing how I have improved over the last year. My 2009 time was 1:33:08 and I was hoping for a good day where I would break 1:20:00.

IMG00007-20100627-0623-1.jpg

The swim was a 300m pool swim and I came out right on my seeding estimate--for the first time in a tri pool swim I neither passed, nor was passed by anyone. A couple times the guy in front of me slowed down enough to catch his breath for a moment, but since he would pick right up again I figured it would be a waste of energy to try to pass him. The bike ride was through a neighborhood with several out and back portions. Unfortunately, my cycle meter battery died sometime overnight (and I did check it last night!) so I did not know my mileage or speed while out on the bike. I did however turn in my fastest bike speed for any triathlon, as I went on perceived exertion and heart rate. It was feeleing hot with the sun beating down, but there was enough shade to keep from feeling too hot. Again I felt fairly strong and only wlaked at aid stations (something I have never done before on a tri) and turned in a strong run. I finished in 1:18:06 with a strong sprint to the finish, and a 15:02 improvement over last year.

I improved in every timed aspect of the race, including the transitions, compared to last year, most notably by 6:16 on the bike and 6:53 on the run. Also, for the first time in a tri, I finished better than the bottom 1/3 of the field (15th out of 24). I am definitely looking forward to my next sprint on 8/8 with renewed energy!

Yea Roger! Nice job. I love hearing how others do.

I'm itching to race. Not another race until July 17. It is gonna be HOT!

Tiberius- Sweet! We have a race report to envy! Sounds like a great race and a really great improvement. Nicely done (and nicely coordinated with your bike, I might add).

Not as exciting here. I did get to go to the "real" running store. It was about 5 hours into a road trip with my mother and almost 2 year old, so not ideal. ;) I stood on some pressure point thingy that told me I have medium-high arches, and then I ran on a treadmill for maybe 30 seconds while I was videotaped from the knee down. Yeah, confirmation that I run like a duck!! The guy working there claimed he was jealous because I was efficient (apparently my duck steps land in the same place)... I bet he says that to all the runners! ;) Anyway, no big revelations, but I walked out with new shoes (asics) to rotate with my Newtons, insoles, socks, a bunch of gels, a new sports bra, etc. The experience would have been incredibly valuable had I gone when I first started- by now I've found pretty much what works for me but it was a lot of trial and error!

OK, waiting on more reports because I am a race report junkie!!

Richard - Great job!!!!

OK, my race was a mental roller coaster with lessons learned. Yes, that means it's looong. you may be sorry you asked. ;)

Wow, kind of a crazy race. Started at packet pickup. Couldn’t find it. Luckily, we ran into the title sponsor, who could not find it either. He had the cell for the race director, though. So, we get our stuff, and I see that the oly starts 15 min after the sprint this year. :( Not like last year. Now, it will be very tough for me to finish before awards. Such is life. Time to drive the course and go home.

Get my stuff together that night and have no bib. :O Ugh. Had to be at packet pickup or just otside. I knew they could fix it, although I know it would have been an easier fix if they were doing race day registration and they weren’t. So not what I needed to deal with.

Wake up to thunderstorms. Guess you could call it waking up, but I didn’t sleep much. Was hoping that the storms came early and would miss the race. Nope.

Head up there and they just kept saying the race was not cancelled yet. There was supposed to be a clear window coming and they could do a 1-hour delay. I go to registration , ready to ask them to look for my bib in case it got turned in. My lucky day! I just said I los t my bib and she pulled it out. Yay! I was all prepared for a long story and it was too easy.
Then again, my bib worry was minimal compared to my storm worries. I know I will be DLF. When they look at the weather window will they give someone as slow as me time to finish? Will I be in the water (as I would be last out) when lightning strikes or will they pull me out? Will I be on a back road on my bike when the weather turns bad. Will I get pulled off the course. I’d rather not start if I will be pulled. :(

The race was to start at 8 am. At about 6:30, the director announces that there is a front coming and to take shelter in our cars. They will let us know after the front. I look at dh and a firend of mine and say, should we get our stuff in transition first. It’s supposed to close at 7:30. Luckily, the former RD and friend of current RD walks by then and says we’ll have plenty of time to get our stuff setup, just clear out before the front hits.

So thankful that I could check on other WISHers from my phone while we waited it out. They had mentioned possibly only doing the sprint if there was not a big enough window for the oly. Again, what if they think it’s big enough and it’s not for me. Ugh.

At about 7:45 it clears up a bit. The director has decided there will only be sprint and du and it starts at 9. OK, I really wanted to get the oly under my belt before the ½ IM, but being struck by lightning or pulled from the course today would not help my mental game. This is probably best-case scenario. Besides, I was a bit disappointed not to do the sprint, because I wanted revenge from last year. ;)

So, I get my stuff sorted and such. Put a rain poncho over all my gear and hope people are a little more kind about kicking stuff around when everyone is trying to keep their stuff dry. Many people who were to do the oly left, but I still needed another race under my belt. Needed to figure out what I had for Xtra nutrition, as it was going to start an hour later.

Then it was time for the pre-race meeting and national anthem. The race director sang the national anthem. But it was more just leading us. Something really cool about a couple hundred people singing it together. Gave me the chills. I have had recordings and listened to amazing voices, but to be singing it with the athletes you are about to race with seemed better than any of the other times

Finally, we make it to the start. I feel like I’ve been through an emotional roller coaster. The water is like bath water. Nice. They say go and we trudge into the water. It’s really shallow for quite a ways. Finally, I can swim. Slow and steady, slow and steady. I have been practicing doing 27 strokes and sighting. That’s about a pool length for me. If I am breathing hard, I can check my time and confirm that I need to slow down. Was doing ok. Even rounded the first turn before anyone asked if I was ok. Ugh. I gave the standard “I’m fine, just slow.” They were very kind and tried to make light of it. Looking back, I had been swimming off course and could not find the buoy when I surfaced. I probably looked a bit lost and I breathe pretty heavy when I surface. So, back to it. Checked my watch when I knew I was over half way and I was enroute to a PR. Cool. Almost caught a couple on the last stretch. Had it been a bit longer…… Finished strong. Was bummed to realize they had moved the chip mats. I looked at my watch where they had been, though, and I was at least 2 minutes faster than last year and last year I PRd! My swims have paid off. Was thrilled that I was able to get myself back into my groove when I was going too fast. Just wish the one volunteer was not finishing with me while doing a leisurely-looking breast stroke while I felt like I was swimming to beat the band. :p

So, up the hill to T1. Trier to jog, but it was killer. Pretty steep slope. Jogged when I got close to the top and then went into T1. That’s when I realized it was a good thing it was only a sprint. I had forgotten a Gu. Oops. Must bring xtra to ½ IM. Did pretty well with my bike. I can’t run in my bike shoes, though, so I just ran in my socks and put the shoes on when I could mount. Not great. Need to work on that. Oh, and the grass was a bit wet. Yuck! Was happy with my bike. Classic. I knew I should pas dh on the out and back. I knew he’d see I was last and be worried. SO, I shouted, “I’m last but having an awesome race!” When I saw him. Must have sounded so weird to anyone but us. :p Passed 6 people. Was hillier than I realized with no good downhills to make up for it. Either around turns or bumpy road. Still I gave it my all and was pleased. Was able to take one shoe off, without unclipping, put that foot down and get the other. Not stellar, but good for a beginner. With clips.

Back to T2. Did well. Was stretching on my way out and realized I forgot my visor. I am very sun sensitive and I forgot barrettes, so I needed it to help with stray heir too. So I jogged back. Of course, the crowd started yelling that I was going the wrong way. I could not get them to realize I knew that. Felt so dumb. I got to my area and realized it had gotten stuck in the poncho. Grrr…. Off to try again. 2 people passed me in T2. Not surprising.

Got a few blocks away and saw I was going faster than I had in a while. Not fast, even for me, but my run has been awful lately and it was faster than my goal pace. Then, I realized I was only a half mile in. Then, I looked and realized I could beat 2 hours fairly easily. So, I pushed. There were people I was trying to pick off, but when I thought I was getting close, they’d speed up. Still, I was doing well. No one was catching me and I was going to PR. Of course, my tri math got in the way and a few times, I thought I needed to do 8 mpm to make it. WTH? Sad. My tri math is awful. I was trying to minimize turns and knew the next turn was left. Staying to the left side when I saw the woman ahead veer right. WTH? Then, I got a better view. There was a family cheering and a girl with the hose spraying in the street. Love that about the local races! Off to the right I went and thanked them profusely.

Passed a volunteer with a little over a half to go. He cheered for me. I said thanks for being out. He said, very emphatically, “No, thank YOU for being here.” Nice. Still, I could not be there w/o volunteers.

With about a quarter mile to go, dh was waiting with cow bell. Ran with me a bit. Told me the woman ahead had nothing left and I could get her. I told him she’d been toying with me fro 3 miles. She had more than he thought. :p Picked up the pace, though. It was a curvy finish, so I didn’t pick up as much as I would have had I seen the finish. I always walk a fine line with that. See it too soon and I kill myself and die before the line. Too late and I leave too much in the tank. Still, I was glad to have energy left.

My watch, which should be slow, showed 1:52:58. Woo hoo! And I didn’t feel too bad afterwards. For such a roller-coaster start, seems like it all went as was best for me. Very fun race! Still don’t have the final results to compare to last year, but I am happy.

Great job Carrie and Richard!
Carrie - I can't believe all the drama with the thunderstorm, and that they had to cancel the Olympic. What were the distances for your race?

Race report for my 1st ever triathlon!

Had a lot of trouble sleeping the night before, really anxious about everything and I couldn't shut my mind off! Got up at 4:45 - had a little yogurt and cereal, and a little coffee, and we headed out for the race.

Arrived at the race around 6 am, they were closing transition at 6:30 and I figured I'd have plenty of time to set my stuff up. Well, they had us parking a good ways away, about a 15 min walk, which I was not anticipating. So I ended up being quite rushed and was one of the last ones to be hustled out of transition. I scarfed down a power bar, some ibuprofen, and a bottle of water waiting for the start.

The 1st wave went off at 7am, my AG hit the water at 7:15. It was a 1/3 mile swim, and I just gave it my all. My sighting went well, I did not swim off course. We were quite bunched up at first, I managed to get myself clear of other swimmers after a minute or so and I was on my way. I came out of the water at 9:19 - I couldn't believe it! I had never swam this distance faster than 12 min in the pool. But my HR as I got out of the water was 187! :scared1: Uh-oh. And it was a steep hill from the beach to transition. I decided to walk it and try to get my HR under control before I hopped on the bike.

Took off for my 18 mile bike ride, HR slowly came down but stayed pretty high as the course was rather hilly. Still, I was feeling good on the bike so I just went for it. I managed to successfully drink and ride for the first time! I passed a ton of people, only got passed by a few. My bike time was 1:06, which I was quite happy with!

Off for the run with gumby legs - started to feel a bit better around a mile in but I never lost the shaky feeling. My knees started to hurt the last half mile but I kept pushing. I saw my DH and DD close to the finish and it helped me pick it up toward the finish. Did the 5K run in 25:30 - also crazy for me as I have never run below a 9 min mile in any training run! Amazing what a little adrenaline and competitive spirit can do for a girl! I cried as I approached the finish line, it was so emotional seeing it in front of me after months of training.

Overall time was 1:46, I was 101 out of 969 women (supposed to be 1400, guess there were a lot of DNS/DNF). Very happy with my 1st tri experience! :yay: I am hooked now, already signed up for another sprint in September, and trying to figure out how to squeeze another one in between now and then!
Thanks for reading my loooong report! I have enjoyed everyone else's reports so much!

Thanks for the reports Carrie and Richard! I love hearing the details, even if they're crazy and drama filled ;) !

And BigEeyore too! I wondered how your first race went, sounds awesome! Good work!

Wow guys - three GREAT races this weekend!!!:thumbsup2

Great times and great results! Sorry your Oly turned into a sprint, Carrie, but sounds like it went well anyway.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!

:cheer2:

BigEeyore- way to go! That's awesome. So jealous of your times, but thrilled for you!!! Love that you are hooked now! My distances were 750m swim, 20 k bike, 5k run, half an oly.

Great races everyone! Congrats on your finishes.
It's wonderful to read everyone's reports and all of the details.

Great reports!

Carrie- Way to go with the flow! I would have been really freaked out sitting in my car in that kind of weather and then having the race shortened. I'm surprised so many people left- I can see being disappointed if you wanted to test yourself at the longer distance, but if I'd dragged all my stuff there I think I'd go ahead and race! You did great- were you scared of water on the roads? I guess that's where your cold weather experience is helpful- I can do heat, but I'm scared of water on the road in any form! (Actually, I might have packed up my stuff and left too...:rolleyes1)

BigEeyore- sweet! How jealous am I of someone having a good swim in their first race?! ;) Look at how fast you are!

As for me, I have a 5k this weekend in St. Simons Island, GA. This will be my fourth year and I'm always disappointed- ranging from a mild "ok, I have a lot of work to do" to utter misery "I'm never running again." I'm kind of wondering why I signed up. Yuck.

But in better news, I just got an e-mail about a local kids' tri. I asked Emma (10) and she wasn't jumping up and down. I quote, "it wasn't that fun last year and the t-shirt was a disappointment." Valid criticism, but I'll work on her.

Here's the good part- they have a munchkin division for 4 year olds. It's swim 25 yards, bike 1/2 mile, and run 1/4 mile (floaties and training wheels required). Coach Harry is now a fairly active, trash-talking 4 year old. He can swim and run, but I need to get him a better bike (training wheels didn't work on his old bike and replacements didn't fit, leaving him with a bike that's probably too small and scares him). I think he would love the idea of training for his own race with a medal, but who knows...

Jen in GA

Jen - LOVE the thought of Coach Harry doing his own tri!!!!!! How fun! SOrry Emma is less than thrilled. Hope she comes around when you start trainign with Harry. Yes, I was worried about wet roads. belieev it or not, the rain sotpped by teh time we left transistion and started again just as awards was ending. So, they dried off some. While I can drive my car through snow adn ice, the bike does not ocme out in that and rarely in teh rain. Only if it starts while we are out. At the trunaround, they kept yellign that it was slicker than it looked. htinking there may hjave been an issue there eaerlier. Many of the better atheletes were worried about newbies to the sport causing porblems when they slid on the wet pavement. May have been whi many left. I think osme just didn't feel like draggin their stuff to transition. Who knows......
