Comparison on Airfare:

Moncton or Fredericton New Brunswick to Orlando, booked 12 weeks before travel:

$694 to Orlando per person changing planes in Toronto or Montreal.

Portland, Maine (four hour drive) to Orlando, booked 12 weeks before travel:

$228 to Orlando per person DIRECT FLIGHT.

For a family of four that's $1864 difference. That's HUGE.

That's the price of a full package for 5 or 6 nights at a value resort.

Wow, definitely worth the 4 hour drive.

Oh yeah.. even taking into account the 4 hour drive.. and the 3.5 hour flight and boarding times etc.. I STILL arrive at Disney sooner than with the more expensive connecting flight.

Ridiculous.

We always make the 2.5 hour drive to O'hare airport in Chicago instead of flying out of one of the smaller airports closer to home. The difference in price of tickets is at LEAST 200.00 per person!

I am glad that I live in NC.....we can drive....also, the tickets roundtrip from Charlotte to Orlando was $174.00 (the last time I checked). I just do not like the baggage prices and we are NOT light travelers.

We booked at least a month ago for trip in September- and we only paid $59 each way with AirTran out of Allentown, PA. It was more expensive for us to drive to Philly, Newark or NYC. I checked Kayak every couple of days - that helped. Dana

we live in ontario and it takes about 1 hour to cross the border to buffalo....tickets $242 return each....non stop........it's pretty good!!

We are lucky, we fly out of Buffalo too. For our August trip we got $159.40 round trip-non stops. Total for 4 people $637.60! :cool1:

Canadian Guy, do you think there is anything to the new announcement on the Disney Visa site that the site will be down on Sunday for maintenance b/w midnight and 6 am and that "some" rewards info will not be available until 8am? Coincidence with your rumor?? or is this a normal Visa thing? I don't normally go to the site but have been recently to check on any promotions for FD. TIA!

I'm not CanadianGuy but I'll answer...
This is common maintenance they do all the time. It doesn't apply only to the Disney Visa, but rather the entire Chase site.

YES, you are only required to purchase a one day base ticket for everyone in your party to receive the dining. this is what I did a couple years ago, when I had an annual pass and 2 comp. tickets from working at the disney store. there were three of us, so we booked it with one day base tickets for all of us, once we got there, the other two upgraded their tickets to 7 day park hoppers. on our last day they used my two comp. tickets and I used my base ticket.
the dining is based on the number of nights you stay at the resort.

Just to note, you were only required to buy one base ticket per person in the past. So far we do not know if that will be the case this year (if FD is offered)...there's always the possibility they could require length of stay tickets. For those who only need the one ticket, hopefully that's all that will be required based on how it's been in the past...but don't be surprised if they change it.

Thanks! I was just coming on to ask this again, I appreciate it!

So... I am REALLY hoping it's just a one day base ticket needed because turns out my sister and BIL will be there most of the trip and we won't need more than the one day base ticket. If they require a length of stay ticket we might just book the room only and use his ticket the whole time.

We fly out of Buffalo (because that's where we live :goodvibes ) and we booked our airfare with Southwest when they extended their schedule at the end of March. For a family of 3, we paid about $478 roundtrip!!!! It was $69 each way/person for nonstop flights. We leave BUF around 6:30am and land at MCO around 9am!!! :cool1: Our return flight leaves MCO around 6:30pm and we land in BUF around 9pm. I love all the extra time we'll get at the parks!

Wow, is that a direct flight? We are planning on driving from the Wilkes-Barre area to DW in October because airfare was too much at Scranton, Newark, Philly, etc. I didn't even think to check A-town's rates!

Great deal!
I booked non-stop out of PWM but they already changed the flight home. We booked airtran I knew that would happen so not a big deal. For the 4 of us it was 802.00 with seat assignments. WE are now thinking of leaving Friday or early Saturday morning and just deal with the lay over.

This is Portland Maine.

Is everyone planning on upgrading the dining plan if it is only QSDP for the values?

We booked out of Buffalo for about $680 USD for a family of 4. Return, Direct Flight.

nope, and I"m so bummed, but we had already decided to at WaterPark and more to our trip this time so we can't afford to do both :(

10 Common Mistakes Made When Booking Airline Tickets

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thought this was interesting !

Long gone is the era of the all-powerful travel agent, in whom you could trust to get you the best deal on your travel plans and to make sure nothing huge was overlooked. Now we're almost all booking our own flights, and the manifold options for booking can cause even the most fastidious among us to make a mistake. That's why the good people at USA Today put together this list of the 10 most common travel booking mistakes.

1. Booking too soon
"For standard vacations and weekend getaways, however, booking way in advance (e.g., three months or more) or before you've done your research may not get you the best price... It's a good rule of thumb to start pricing vacations six to eight weeks before your travel dates to get the best sense of what you should expect to pay for your trip."

2. Booking too late
"Capacity cuts and belt-tightening across the industry have greatly reduced last-minute pricing inventory (at least for airfares)... Holding out for a lower price may result in the exact opposite—reduced inventory leading to high prices and extremely limited availability."

3. Not comparison shopping
"This may be the single most important rule when booking travel, and one that will serve you well regardless of what you're looking to buy: Comparing prices across a variety of providers is the best way to ensure you're getting a good price for your trip."

4. Ignoring seasonality
"A destination's peak travel period will result in the highest demand and prices. If you're planning to travel during this busy time, book well in advance for the best prices and availability... Conversely, knowing when the off-peak and shoulder seasons occur is just as important, particularly if you're planning a lot of outdoor activities."

5. Not reading reviews
"Nowadays reviews are plentiful — you can find hotel reviews on sites such as TripAdvisor, Yahoo, and major OTAs (Expedia, Orbitz, Travelocity). Before making a reservation, cross reference hotel ratings from your favorite guidebooks against online user reviews to get a good sense of what a property is really like."

6. Not reading the fine print
"If something looks too good to be true, it probably is. Break out the magnifying glass and comb over the teeny-tiny text at the bottom of that seemingly great deal. From there, you can determine caveats, regulations, and the actual cost, including taxes, fees, and any 'hidden' charges that can drive up the total price."

7. Not understanding the difference between direct and non-stop flights
"Non-stop flights get you from your departure city to your arrival city seamlessly, with no stops or breaks during service... A direct flight may include a few stops along the way to drop off and pick up passengers... A non-stop flight tends to cost a bit more for the convenience of the faster flight and the possibility of flying a less-than-full plane without the chance to pick up additional paying customers along the way."

8. Booking a too-tight connection
"Avoid booking connections that are less than an hour, particularly if you know your connecting airport is large and has terminals spread out, or if you're flying different legs on separate carriers that may not share gate areas and/or terminals."

9. Not taking fees into account
"The proliferation of fees in recent years has made doing your pre-booking legwork more important than ever. Whether it's extra charges for checked baggage, overweight baggage, in-flight entertainment, flying with a pet, or even carry-on bags, fees today can greatly inflate the cost of your ticket."

10. Ignoring follow-up e-mails/alerts after booking
"The days of getting a phone call from your airline to notify you of changes or cancellations are long over; in many cases, email updates are the only form of communication. Ignore them at your peril."

First off let me say I'm toally jealous of the good fares you guys have found. I can't find anything under $277 a person.. MSP-MCO Aug 22nd-30th. I've tried starting on the 21st as well since I know Sat is cheaper than Sun. I just have to find someone to buy my Twins tickets for the 21st.

We're not planning on upgrading to the DDP from the QSDP. It will be Me, DH, DD 5, DD 3, MIL and FIL. My mom is watching our DD who will be 11 months because I don't think she would enjoy the heat. Keeping the little ones occupied while we eat gets hard. We did it in 2008 when my dd was 2.5 and it got to be long for her although it was nice to relax and cool off.

It is a direct flight. Both ways. I can't imagine we could get there any cheaper. Dana
