***2009-2010*** cheer parent thread!!

The coaching situation is a bit complicated which may be a source of the problem. One day a week they are coached on cheers by two science teachers...they might have been HS cheerleaders or something but they certainly aren't professional cheer coaches. On another day of the week, a professional coach works with them, mostly for the competition routine.

Here's what I think happened: Flyer told the teacher coaches she doesn't want to fly and they were all "whatever, we don't care" (that is the general attitude they give off). Then flyer tells the prof coach she doesn't want to fly and she says "you have to fly for competition." She probably doesn't feel like she has the authority to make the girl fly for non-competition routines.

I'm going to give it a few more practices to shake out. My prediction is that the flyer will refuse to practice stunting on the competiton routine, then the professional coach will have no choice but to choose another flyer.

I am not sure I would want them stunting at football games then. Stunting is the most dangerous part of cheerleading and should be supervised by people with training, not only in stunting in general, but in the specific stunts the girls are doing.

You're actually correct and I probably should be happy that my D is not stunting at football games (although she is personally very careful.) The teacher coaches bring their babies/toddlers to the games and set up lawn chairs and watch their kids and chat with each other. One stunt team was being very silly with their stunts at the last game. A couple of the girls were also doing fulls, which have been banned by the school district for games (but not competitions). Some parents noticed but the sponsors didn't.

Yeah, maybe on reflection I should be happy that my D is just standing there!;)

We recently attended a pep rally to start the season for all of our teams. I caught this photo of my dd's team and thought I would share.

My dd injured her finger yesterday doing a tumbling pass. It's her middle finger of her right hand - very swollen and totally black and blue. I'm taking her to the doc tomorrow.

Her team had to compete today - one day later - and she did compete with them - but she could not tumble. :( It was really frustrating for her and we are both concerned with how quickly this will heal. She has a smaller comp next weekend and I think she will still have to avoid tumbling then. Her next big comp is on 12/5.

I hope she doesn't also develop a mental block as a result of this. Is there anything I can do to help her avoid that?

DS12 hurt his hand two weeks ago trying to do a tuck on the tumble track. He was at his sister's birthday party and wasn't supposed to be doing this! Anyway, his hand was black and blue and swollen. I watched it for a few days. I finally took a picture of it and asked a few of the doctors in the ER where I work if I should have it x-rayed. They both said I should to make sure he didn't have a hair-line fracture. It was fine but the doctor who x-rayed it said to stay off of it for two weeks and then he could be back to normal. He also said he had never seen bruising on a hand like this. DS's knuckles and where the fingers meet the hand were bruised and there was a big bruise in the middle of his palm. It really looked more like his hands were dirty than bruised! Hope your DD is fine and I would assume if nothing is fractured, she should be back to normal in a few weeks.

sorry to hear that, let us know what the dr finds. hopefully it will be just a light sprain and she'll be back to herself in a few weeks. Are you going to the Cheer Tech national in Philly on Dec 5th? If so, i'll be there! Sounds like it's going to be a pretty big competition this year since they are giving out a few full paid Worlds bids. I understand a lot of big teams are going to that one including a bunch from Maryland. Should be a good weekend! :goodvibes

Our first competition is next weekend but D's team isn't competing because D's flyer has a broken something or other. Having been with competitive cheer for a very short amount of time, it's hard to believe that they ever have the whole team healthy enough to compete.

Finally, I found this thread! I thought there was a cheer parent thread, but when I searched it would never come up!
My dd8 is on an all star competion team. This is her first year. They are using her as a flyer a little bit. It makes me nervous, but she loves being on the team.

Safety first. Watch some practices and if safety isn't foremost, find a new gym. School cheer is what scares me. Friday at a pep rally a flyer got dropped on her head on the wooden floor (taken the ER as a precaution but she's okay.) The girls were just doing spontaneous stunting...the back base actually jumped out of the way as the girl fell.

WOW!!! DD is a back and got a bloody nose last night from her flyer when she was catching her to make sure she didn't hit the ground...I can't believe the back jumped out of the way! Glad the girl is okay.

mygirlkristi - your gym does look really nice! I love the painted walls. Our gyms have always had white walls, didn't think about it until I saw yours. :)

Does anyone have any competitions in Indiana or Ohio?

Missypie - ha ha, had to add I LOVE your tag "NO ONE looks chic at Disneyworld" :)

I think that's a danger with school cheer. Most of the girls haven't been on a cheer team, so the younger girls are stunting for the first time...they don't have the safety issues drummed into them. My D is a back base, too...sometimes she's got so many bruises that I expect a call from Child Protective Services.

Ugh - well - I took my DD to the doctor - and her finger is broken. Not only that, it was crooked. The doctor had to re-set it and now she is in a cast for 3 weeks. I can't even beleive I'm writing this. She has a comp this weekend - a very small one almost more like an exhibition - and then a big one on 12/5.

She gets the cast off on 11/23 - and the doc said she can tumble on it once it's off as long as we tape her fingers well. We'll see. This is so frustrating for my daughter - she doesn't want to be without cheer for even one day.

I'm not sure if her team will let her fly with her hand in a cast or not - but I am betting she could do it. She does an arabesque and then a scale - but her scale hand is the uninjured one. No scorps yet in the routine. If they put one in for 12/5 - she'd be okay by then. I know she doesn't want to be replaced. We'll see what happens.

I am just so upset - as is dd. What a major bummer.

Jennz - We go to Ohio comps. We were in Columbus this past weekend and we are back there again on 12/5. How about you?

the back base actually jumped out of the way as the girl fell.

Yikes! I've had that happen to me before, and it's not fun. Stunting is serious business. I get so scared when I stunt with new girls who've never cheered before (I'm on a newly started college team).

my DD gained a new skill round off back tuck and was asked to join the level 3 team. She is very happy,

We (Carolina Crossfire Cheer) had our first competition today. We came in first in Youth Large level 1 and then we won Grand Champions! Our juniors and seniors didn't compete due to injuries so we missed the second half of the competion. Turns out we also won (along with Haydens All-Stars level 3) an International All-Levels Championship full paid bid! Pretty impressive for our first official competition ever! We were part of another gym that had been around a year and a half but the coaches split and our coach opened her own cheer gym. About half of these kids had never cheered before. Now I am really excited for Spirit of Hope in Charlotte!
