2008 Drum Corps Thread

To all of you who replied to my question...thanks so much! I just got back from a week at WDW and appreciate everyone's comments.

Well, DS tells me the kids that are wanting to audition will be looking at Phantom Regiment to do so. I think their HS assistant director has been working with a few of them who he thinks has some potential. I know he's got those "big expectations" a couple of ya'll mentioned and so does DS's private music teacher and it's rubbing off on DS. I just don't want him to get a big head or get his hopes up too high to be disappointed...but that is Mom talking. (And that Mom will be suggesting a lower division to tryout for the first time.) I am behind him 100% on this endeavor if it's really what he wants to pursue. I know there are many great things he can gain from it and wouldn't want to deny him the opportunity if he does get it. But at the same time I want him to know that it's a HUGE commitment for him and if he gets it, then he's with it for the duration. He's got a good work ethic so I don't think that would be a problem. Since I returned from WDW, he's told me he's reconsidering his career options. For the last couple of years he's been thinking of medicine, but now he's listening to his heart and is thinking about being a musician in some form or another.

In any case, thanks for all the info and support! I'll keep ya'll posted on how it goes for DS.

Yes please keep us posted. I just saw the Bluestars last night, from LaCross WI and they were great! Just another option to think of. I'm not sure, but I think they may pratice in Bloomington IN now.

Thanks Mike! I appreciate the video, and especially the GREAT report! After hunting down some Youtube video of the Crown, I agree 100%. I did see them last week in Bristol, RI warming up, and yep, loved the sound!

Just got home from a DAY in the sun. First "Drill Practice" in 30 years! OUCH!!!!!!! My head is burnt to a crisp...dang astro turf stinks! Lets just say THANK GOD for my 14 year old daughter who keeps replacing the wet towel I am keeping on my head to try and bring the blazing temps down. Heck, I think I could replace the flashing beacon on top of the Pru in Boston to keep planes from hitting it. :headache:

Anybody out there coming to the East Coast Classic on the 31st?

Hey Rick,
I totally appreciate the blazing scalp after working the Revere Flea Market this past weekend. OUCH!! Hope the Crusader Alumni do a great show! Love to see them every year giving their all.
Crown deserved to win in Orlando from every thing I've heard. Cadets better look at their program if they are hoping to continue to be in the top ranks. If former members are not liking it, it must be a weak concept. A shame, because they are one of my favorite corps of all time!

Thanks Mike for the videos! Forgive me if I offend any other corps, but where I come from(and that would be Blue Stars) you have an image to uphold and that pretty much consists of being as hardcore as possible. Of the 3 corps, I felt only the Cadets were the ones to show their style, maintain their lines, and do everything by the books. I understand not every corps feels the need to never smile, but they should all expect at least straight lines and uniformity.

I still congratulate all 3 corps on marching in MK, but my hats really go off to the Cadets for demonstrating the difference between marching band and drum corps.

I haven't watched the Orlando show yet, but will do so as soon as it's online! I can't wait!

Teal - No Shako's No guard equiptment.

Cadets - No guard equiptment (In fact a nice young girl who sat next to us even asked...."Oh is that their drill team?")

So my hat goes off to the Glassmen for demonstrating the best "corps" attitude in the parade.

Funny story, I parked at the Grand and took the monorail over. As we drove by the canal where they park the light parade I noticed the Teal Horn Line warming up there on the grass....I wanted to yell so bad..."Stop the monorail now!" :rotfl:

If you call what the cadets guard did in the parade "maintaining their lines", I'd hate to see what your idea if "jiving" would be!:scared1:

And if you honestly didn't think you would offend anyone with those comments, all I can say is WOW.

For the record, The Crown was the closest thing to a "Drum Corps" I have seen in some time, thank you!:thumbsup2

***Ok, the previous sentence withdrawn as a rebutle to Zulemara's comment after re-reading post and realizing the post was a comment on the MK parade...but still stands as my honest opnion of the Crown.

ok I'm glad you edited that, because my comments about the parade are absolutely NO reflection of my thoughts on the field.

And for clarification, no I'm not counting the guard in any of the 3 corps because to be honest I've never seen a drum corps guard that does anything worthwhile in a parade. Even in blue Stars all they did was march and twirl and do waves. Like the first person would spin around, then 4 counts later the next line, etc. There was no set routine or anything like that.

I'm talking entirely about the hornlines and drumlines. I just thought the Cadets performed best.

just my .02

As far as the corps proper goes, of course Cadets are going to look the best, they are in a league of their own, goes without saying.

As for the Color Guard....I absolutely hate the waving dancing thing! And don't even get me started about wearing warm up suits in a parade! How about guarding the Colors....in full uniform? GASP!

I know the MK does not allow weapons to be thrown in the air, and I completely understand, but carrying a flag at order arms is what I would prefer to see, much like the Glassmen did. As far as uniforms go, I like the Cavies approach. The guard has a parade uniform that is the same as the corps proper, so they give a unified appearance. Granted, many color guard field uniforms would not make it in a street parade these days! Remember the Cavies bicycle show? Imagine those kids marching down Main Street USA in those uniforms? :scared1:

Ok, makes sense, and I will agree with that. IN fact the guard looked like they were with somebody else. :lmao: And although, Danny Boy conjures up nightmares from when I competed against 27, it sounded great.

As far as guards, they are to add "color", hence the original name, "color guards". And in my day (oh the aches and pains - :rotfl: ) they did just that. BTW, I won't let my wife read this post....she was in the guard after she got braces and had to drop playing horn. IMO, the guard more than made up for just marching straight lines holding the flag in the parades with the "calisthenics" they had to perform during the show.

Don't have nightmares about "Danny Boy". I have, actually, fond memories of "Conquest", "Captain from Castille" and many other BAC classics. Let it rest, IMHO. We kicked your butt, and you know it! (Only kidding - I have great respect for the Crusaders, and send a generous donation every season. 2000 Cru kicked A$$ and are one of my favorite all time performances. Competing against BAC was an honor. That said, "Fear Danny Boy!!!!!!!!!!!!":rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

I'm not going to bash any of the corps, but I'm just not feeling any of the magic I used to feel when I'd watch DCI shows. I'm seeing a lot of repetition from recent previous years both musically and visually. It just seems like there's a lack of creativity going on right now. It's kind of sad because I used to be excited about going to shows throughout the season, but I have very little desire to go this year. :sad1:

Okay......I was going to rant about a couple corps in particular, but I stayed up all night and need to get some sleep.

I know the kids and staff members are working hard but something is just not right here.

Does anyone else feel this way?

:lmao: Well back in them days (78) I was with North Star, and until DCI came up with the slotting THEY wanted for the Nationals, we kicked your butts...:lmao: :lmao: :lmao: I mean really, pom poms, vs. our big lips...:rotfl: And we had Jerry Noonan whom Maynard wanted to meet after hearing him in Ole (79). :thumbsup2

Too bad George can't see past the end of his nose and embrace the Light Brigade and call it what it should be called, "27 Alumni"!:thumbsup2

So Cadets and Crown meet again tonight.....

Anyone feel like taking on a bet? :cool1:

From a show standpoint, I hope Crown wins, but knowing Hoppy, I have a feeling Cadets will be pulling out the new ending that has been rumored.

Go Blue Devils!

Found this on the Google Disney site....:rotfl2:

I went to Drum Core International's Orlando Competition on satuday and
announced to everyone there was a special showing of three bands who
would be marching through the magic kingdom the next day before the
parade. So I had to be there with my mother and sister who enjoyed
DCI. We will have Video from the bands soon.
