2008 Disneyland Half - Who's Going?

Diane: The last couple of days were the major progress as I saw my surgeon on Monday and I was using a crutch as a cane. The knee was still weak and giving out. Dr said with basically 2 surgeries in one(and 4 hrs) that I will have 2 major areas that are going to be sore and have scar tissue. Plus everything will hurt from starting to use. I made a conceeded effort that I have to walk and thats why I can move around.

Dr rolled eyes that I was going to do the 1/2 at DL. I will sign up in the next couple of weeks and see what happens. At least do 5K and start 1/2 to see how it goes. Linda will at least finish so we can get one of those medals. I jokingly(disclaimer-not making fun of the distance) say to myself its "only" 13 miles after doing the Goofy(Dopey) in Jan with these issues. At least we will be spending 5 days at Grand CA Concierge. Can't beat that. Much better than having 2 surgeries in 8 weeks:rolleyes1

I want to thank everyone for the PD! It has helped:)

Figured it would hurt but even knowing that it doesn't make it easier.

we'll be pulling for you to cross that magical line on aug 31st. tough journey but a wonderful weekend awaits :thumbsup2

Hi to your Linda!!!

Susan and I are about attached at the phone right now we're both so excited about our return to DL. Though she was there last fall for a quick day visit while on the coast. I have to check the refurb list and see if I can't get on the things that were closed in 2006. i hope the HM will be open. it's going to be a whirlwind of a weekend and we'll return to work that Tuesday falling asleep i'm sure but oh what a weekend it will be!!!

So sorry for the long absence. Life gets in the way sometimes. Aaargh!

Our list still keeps growing. :cool1:

sramille, Chris, Diane and Susan - So glad you are joining us! :woohoo:

The new medal is so awesome. I can't wait to get one. I see by my calendar that the event is just 2.5 months away. Ack! I need to start training or I won't be getting that bling.

Robert - you amaze me. I can't imagine doing a half after these surgeries. When I did my first half back in 2007 at WDW, there was a guy that passed me around mile 7 and HE WAS ON CRUTCHES. :rotfl: That may be you at DL. :teeth:

Please add me!! My sister and I are running the half. It is gonna be really fun for us. We are leaving our DH's and kids at home. We are flying across the country and meeting each other at DL - how crazy is that? (I'm in SC, my sis is in MA). We are staying at DLH. Started training this past week!

Becky

Hello WISHers. I wanted to introduce myself. My name is Jen and I first found out about you guys while at the Minnie Marathon 15k. It was my first ever race (my DH and I started jogging this past Jan.) and I was really nervous. I decided to try the 5K on my own before my husband and I did the 15K together. I was alone because my DH was in the room watching our 4 year old- we had a sitter for only one race. There was a nice group of people in neon green shirts who were really nice to me and helped me calm my nerves and psych myself up for the run-- thanks particularly to the couple from Jackson, NJ who's names I have unfortunately forgotten. I've been lurking on the boards since then and finally decided to jump in. :cool1:

My DH and I just decided that we are totally hooked on running Disney races and will be flying out to Disnyland for the 1/2 marathon. I've never run that far before, but I figure I still have 2 months to train... We would love to be counted among the WISHers at this event. Thanks for the support.

Look, I'm a "dear husband"!

After 14 years of going to WDW with my DW, it took a half marathon is lead us to our very first time going to Disney Land. We look forward to meeting ya'll there.

Butch

Jen & Butch: Welcome!!!

You will have fun out in DL. We will be heading down by car from Northern CA. It's only fair since we always have long cross country flight. Now we just have a longer drive:rotfl2: At least we won't get charged $15 for 1st and $25 for 2nd checked bags:rolleyes1

Just hope for "normal" temps.

Becky: Glad you are joining in too:thumbsup2 We have to hook up both of you!

BTW: 11 weeks from today to the 1/2!!!

Jen and Butch: Glad to have you here and can't wait to meet up at a WISH meet before. I'll be a walker so I'llbe hangin out in the back.

Anybody coming up with a WISH meet yet for the DL 1/2?? Let me know.

We are pretty excited about the trip. This is our 1st trip to DL-- we usually frequent Disney World. Any suggestions on the best way to get to the park from the airport? We will be flying into ONT-- it had by far the cheapest flights. I can't seem to find any link to a shuttle or Disney transport. We were resigning ourselves to renting a car but I'd appreciate any better thoughts/suggestions.

Jen,

Check these guys out http://www.supershuttle.com/default.aspx?content=Ontario . We used them when flying into John Wayne. They were cheap and easy to deal with.

I am wondering the same thing. I have never met up with WISH before and hope to meet some team members at the DL 1/2. I don't have any WISH gear though.

Casey,

You don't need WISH gear to be a team member. The lime green just makes us stand out in a crowd. :thumbsup2

I missed out at the WISH meet at the Goofy this year, even though I happened to be staying at the Pop Century hotel where it was held. Anyone who was there in Florida, have any ideas for California? (Wendy, Mel, Carrie, Chester & Tracy, Scott, Amybeth, Robert & Linda?).

Shall we keep the meet simple, say out in front of Jamba Juice in Downtown Disney, or outside the Expo? That way a park ticket is not required for those who don't plan on being in the park on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday.

What day, and what time?

The restaurants are pretty packed in Downtown Disney, and in the Parks, so getting a large reservation and adjoining tables will be difficult.

Start throwing out the suggestions, we have 73 days to the 5K, and 74 days to the Half Marathon.

In 2006 we met in DTD, outside the Italian fast food place. It was very hot standing outside visiting, and there wasn't much seating once we moved inside. Do any of the Disney hotels have something similar to a food court?

I'm up for doing something at Downtown Disney, so a park ticket is not required. I am planning on doing DL one day, just not sure when.
I have never been to DL ever so I have no idea of where to meet. I like the DTD area that way maybe I could get a ride over there from my Aunt and also do my packet pickup at the same time and then get a ride back and not have to go back and forth. If possible maybe in A/C would be great.
I will be staying near property at the Candy Cane Inn Saturday Night, so if anybody staying at the hotel or nearby wants to meet for a pre-race night dinner near that area that could be walked to, let me know.

Jamba Juice in DTD works for me. Even outside the expo works.

Can't wait to hear the final details...

My family and I went to the restaurant in the Paradise Pier hotel the night before last year's 1/2 marathon and the crowd wasn't too bad. If we meet right when they open for dinner, getting seated shouldn't be a problem. Otherwise, Jamba Juice in DTD works for me!

Hey Disneyland Half WISH team :

Los Angeles got up to 113 degrees on Thursday, according to my friend who lives there. Expect the same weather in a another 71 days or so.

Have a great weekend all, good safe racing and training everyone!

Here's a great article on hydrating in our local paper today.

Fun in Hawaii sun calls for proper hydration

Hawai'i's reputation as an ideal playground for recreational athletes is founded on the reality of clear skies and sunshine virtually all year long.

But year-round sunshine, especially in our signature high-humidity summer months — requires year-round vigilance for dehydration, heat exhaustion and other dangerous conditions.

At this week's U.S. Youth Soccer Far West Regionals at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Park, as many as a dozen players and spectators have been treated for dehydration and heat-related illness.

The prevailing assumption is that many others suffered minor heat-related symptoms that, while easily avoidable, could have escalated to more serious conditions.

Cynthia Shimoda and Alison Kuramoto are among a team of athletic trainers on hand to treat the estimated 8,000 players, coaches, spectators and administrators on and around the fields this week.

Both have seen their share of overheated athletes in need of cooling care, and both are quick to emphasize that nearly all of the cases they've seen could have been avoided.

"If you're thirsty, it's already too late," Shimoda says. "You're already dehydrated."

As Shimoda notes, proper hydration is crucial for the body's highly efficient cooling mechanisms to work properly.

Under normal conditions, the body reacts to excessive heat by sweating. As perspiration evaporates from the skin, the body slowly cools. (Heat is also lost by breathing out moisture.)

However, if a body is not properly hydrated, the system can't work as efficiently as it should and the resulting accumulation of excess heat begins to quite literally cook the person from the inside out.

"When you're sweating, your skin will be cool and clammy," Shimoda said. "But when you stop sweating, the skin dries. At this point, your body is going into shock and is shutting down."

Dehydration may result in heat exhaustion, the symptoms of which include heavy sweating, cramping, nausea, fatigue and dizziness.

Untreated, heat exhaustion can progress into heat stroke, a potentially fatal condition that occurs when the body's temperature exceeds 104 degrees.

Symptoms of heat stroke may include rapid heartbeat, elevated or lowered blood pressure, confusion, headache, nausea and fainting.

Ultimately, heat stroke may result in organ failure, coma and death.

Shimoda and Kuramoto say maintaining proper hydration is an ongoing process. They advise athletes to stay hydrated well before the start of any athletic event. Consuming at least eight ounces of water or sport drink before an event should ensure a healthy start.

Athletes can also minimize the enervating effect of the sun by wearing light breathable fabrics (synthetics like DryFit work well in wicking away moisture for proper evaporation), applying and reapplying sunscreen (minimum spf 30), and shielding themselves with UV-protective sunglasses, hats and umbrellas.

Once activity begins, athletes need to rehydrate regularly, though the exact amount will vary based on exertion and climate conditions. Endurance athletes, for example, are advised to drink six to eight ounces of fluid every 20 minutes.

One reliable measure is the so-called pee test: If an athlete's urine is clear, he or she is adequately hydrated. If it's dark yellow, chances are dehydration is occurring.

As many young athletes learned this week, humidity can exacerbate heat-related problems because moisture in the air can impede perspiration.

Mild dehydration can be treated by drinking water and/or sports drink (maintaining electrolyte balance is important to allow muscles to absorb fluid), changing into dry clothes, applying cool towels and resting.

More serious forms of heat exhaustion may require immediate icing, an IV infusion for faster rehydration, and immediate medical attention.

TIPS FOR COMBATING, TREATING HEAT AILMENTS

Dehydration can affect an athlete's ability to perform, causing headaches, cramps and excessive fatigue. Coupled with playing in a hot and humid climate, dehydration can cause heat illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

The National SAFE KIDS Campaign suggests children over 90 pounds should hydrate with 6 to 12 ounces of water or a sports drink at least one hour before practice. During activity, children should be drinking 6 to 9 ounces every 20 minutes.

Below are more tips.
FLUID EXAMPLES FOR CHILDREN

Over 90 pounds: 1 hour before activity, 6 to 12 ounces

Under 90 pounds: 1 hour before activity, 3 to 6 ounces

During activity: every 20 minutes, 3 to 5 ounces (under 90 pounds), 6 to 9 ounces (over 90 pounds)
After activity: to replace fluids, up to 8 ounces per half pound lost (under 90 pounds), up to 12 ounces per half pound lost (over 90 pounds)
