2008 - C25K program :) WELCOME!!

Hey maroo, here's where I am looking:
http://disneyworldsports.disney.go....detail?name=WdwMarathonDetailPage&pid=pip-1-0

I just saw that the Goofy is open again! Not that I'm considering it or anything!

Ah!!! I see it now!

Yeah...I think the Goofy is pretty Goofy. :lmao: I mean...more power to those that can do it. :worship: But it is nowhere on my radar!

I did try to get some details from the Unplugged GKTW team today, but no luck yet. Still trying to decide what to do on that...

I had a hard time today with the running. I did it outside again. We had lots of rain here yesterday (and a tornado, but that is another story), but it kept the pollen count down and the heat was in the high 70's...so that was bearable.

What I don't really get...is that I am slower when I do the walk/jog combos than when I just walk really fast. I hurt more - especially on the concrete - when I jog.

I mean...heck...I was passed by a neighbor that was walking and TEXTING! :lmao: :rotfl2: :rotfl:

So...should I be going back and concentrating on the walking and only running small distances that are more manageable than trying to do the combo running?
Why is it so different when I run outside?

... I mean...heck...I was passed by a neighbor that was walking and TEXTING! :lmao: :rotfl2: :rotfl: ...

LOL!! :rotfl::rotfl:

I haven't run outside yet (just walked) so I can't help there. I do know that even when I just walk outside my feet get more tired/sore I guess from being on the pavement instead of my cushy treadmill. lol

That actually makes me feel a little better!! :thumbsup2 Because I was having a hard time!

Unfortunately...the half marathon IS outside!!!!! :scared1:

you think they would set me up a treadmill right there at the castle? :lmao: :rotfl2: :rotfl:

I mean...heck...I was passed by a neighbor that was walking and TEXTING! :lmao: :rotfl2: :rotfl:

That is funny, I think so long as you are jogging you are making your bones and muscles stronger. I'm certainly now expert though. Today will be the first day in my new shoes. I was going this morning but since my little guy was up half the night he has decided to take a nap now, so we will hit pavement this afternoon. I would love to do the half marathon with you all, but I think that is really ambitious for me right now. I think we are going to do the Race for the Cure in DC in June.

DW and I noticed that we were able to run better outside than we did on the treadmill...we even started calling it the DREADmill. My times were always faster and everything...I think it's because I am not staring at the screen waiting for the next dot to light up tracking my progress or whatever.

Most of the time when I go for a run I'll do 2-3 miles, but I've started making my runs be "runs for a purpose." We live .25 miles away from our post office....so I run to the post office and check our PO box or mail off a netflix movie and then just continue running. That's 1/2 a mile out of the way without even thinking of it as "running" since I'm going somewhere.

Also I'd HIGHLY encourage you all to find a running trail or some sort of path that you can run on to do your longer runs. I've found myself many times where I've wanted to do 3 miles or so and since I'm running around the track next to our apartment or I'm running around our small town...I'm like ahh I can't do anymore, but if I go to the running trail and run 1.5 miles out....I have no choice but to make it back and I always figure I'll get there faster running.

I love running outside.....the first few times we did it it felt like it was a freeing experience...like we no longer had to run and stare at the same stuff while we ran, but we could check out the scenery as we ran. We had a nice trail in Chicago that went along one of the local rivers that I loved because it was very scenic and there were always animals running around and what not. We have a fantastic trail here in Orlando that I always try to get to whenever I need a good run.

One thing I might mention is that you may notice at first that running outside may cause you to exert more energy or that you get tired or are more sore the next day.......we found that out too and talked with some experienced runners who said that our muscles were use to running on the treadmill where we didn't have to propel ourselves or push ourselves forward on our feet because the treadmill did that for us when we put our feet down. So now that you're out on the pavement you'll notice that you have to push off of the ground or you're not going to go anywhere.

Also always be cautious when you're running or walking outside. Especially if you're wearing headphones...be aware of your surroundings (cars, people, everything).

Happy Friday! :)

cwnhokie~ I hope you enjoy your new shoes today!
Yes, I think the half is ambitious for me too....but I REEEEEAAAAALLY want to do it. Honestly my biggest worry is having enough time to train for it when I get into the longer runs in the fall.

DisneyDayTripper~THANK YOU for that. You are so helpful!
"you'll notice that you have to push off of the ground or you're not going to go anywhere." That made me laugh... "Why am I not moving?!? Oh, I have to push myself forward now...ok"
I'm planning to run in my neighborhood. I've got a 3.1 mile "course" planned out which I walk...just need to run it now.

maroo~This is for you :teeth:

Forgot to post what I did today..

W5D3 done! I only ran at 4.5mph though. But, I did it. And I'm still sick.

I have to laugh, one week ago I was looking ahead to repeating week 4 because I wasn't ready for week 5..now I'm done with week 5. I had no idea that running at 5mph was THAT much harder than 4.5. It's such an extreme difference. Even 4.5 to 4.7 is different! But I'm glad I know this now so I can play around with the C25K and move forward how I want to. And if I had to do a 5K right now, I know I could do it and finish in less than ~45 minutes. Certainly not a good time, but it's something! :)

liznboys, that picture is hysterical.

Just finished week 1, woo hoo. New shoes felt great. Now I'm motivated just to prove to my husband that the price of the shoes was worth it.

Wow! I did it! I finished W5D3...20 min. of running no walking! :woohoo: I did not break any speed records that is for sure. :lmao:It was truly a struggle and I can't say I enjoyed it but now that I am finished I am feeling really good about it. :scared: There were several times during the run that I wanted to walk so bad but I kept going knowing that if I did walk I would have to report back here to you all that I had walked and I would have disappointed myself! This message board is a great way to remain accountable!!! My ankles are a little sore and feel tight. Advil will be my friend today. ;)During the run both of my ankles (the area on the outside of my ankle that runs up my ankle bone and around the back of my foot) hurt and felt really stiff. After the first 8 min. I stopped for 5 sec or so to try to stretch the area but it was worse after stretching, I almost didn't stop to stretch thinking that it would be cheating but I thought if I don't I may not be able to continue and as it worked out I am hoping that bit of stretching was helpful. :confused:Thankfully about half way through they stopped hurting. I am still in Orlando and even though it is not too humid I can tell a difference from the dry CA air.

I may try to do W6D1 on Sunday but if not I will for sure start W6 on Monday.

I hope everyone has a great weekend!:grouphug:

Why is it so different when I run outside?

:laughing:I felt like this today! I knew I could never keep up my 'normal' pace so I slowed waaayyy down! Thankfully I was running a little faster than I could walk! :lmao:I found the one time that I ran on the treadmill to be easier than running outside except for the fact that you can't stop on the treadmill even for a second! My ankle was not sore at all and my breathing was much easier on the treadmill.

Thanks for the info. It is great to hear that you are still successfully running and I like the idea of running to do errands. I have always been a yo-yo dieter and it drives me crazy! I lose the same 30-40 lbs over and over again and usually can keep it off for a year or so and then it 'creeps' back up on me. I now have 20 lbs to lose (would love to lose more but I want to be realistic in what I can maintain) and I am hoping that running will be a way to help plus sensible eating...no more fad, get skinny quick diets for me anymore. I have a nice trail around a park in CA and it is a dirt path which I now know is kinder to legs and feet after running on concrete this past week here in Orlando. I'm with you on running outside...I don't think I would like running indoors on a regular bases...I need distractions big time to get through the running.

Great job! :worship: You ran faster than I did...way to go! I couldn't imagine you repeating W4 because you were progressing and running for longer periods than required - You are doing wonderfully! I am not going to try to work on my speed until I've gotten a couple more weeks in. I plan to do a 5K at the end of W9 so I am hoping to increase my speed some especially since they post the times on the website! I can't imagine having my time now posted for ever more!:scared1:

I loved the treadmill picture in front of the castle...I'll be thinking of that image when I am at the MK tomorrow! I have had to restrain myself and work this work and not sneak off to the parks...it has been hard - harder than running today!

New shoes! I bought new shoes before starting and now I can't wait until I need to go buy my second pair because then I can really say I am a 'runner' and be more knowledgeable about what my feet and legs feel like while running. :yay: Congratulations on finishing W1...the time does really go by fast and before you know it you'll be half way through the program. :dance3:

:lmao:

Oh Liz...

You should warn me!!! I almost spewed Diet Coke all over my desk!!!

:rotfl: :lmao: :rotfl2:

Shoot!! She looks GOOD!! If I could look that good, I would sure put that treadmill right up to the castle! That is hilarious!

:lmao: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

CoMickey - WAY TO GO!!! :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2:

DisneyDayTripper - that is a good idea...to run somewhere! Or decide how far I am going and run OUT and back...The problem I have is that I live in a gated condo complex and it is hard to get out of the gate on foot and there have been car break-ins where I would leave my car. But I may just have to figure out how to do it!

cwnhokie - Let us know how those new shoes work out! I bet you will LOVE them! It did take a few times for me to break them in a bit, though...so don't get discouraged if it is a little strange at first... :)

I just love this thread!! You guys are so funny and nice! You are such an encouragement to keep going on this jogging thing.

Whenever I go run I always only take my car key with me and I tie it in with my shoelaces and then tuck the end of it down under the bottom part of my shoes laces so it doesn't bounce....once I can get pictures uploaded I'll take a picture of what I mean. I take the key with me because there is no way I'd leave my car unlocked.

Also if any of you are wanting to run outside and know the distance and what not of your runs Garmin makes running watches (my MIL has one and I bought DW one for her b-day but I run more than her so I use it more than her). It tells you how far you've been, your pace and all sorts of info...and then you hook it up to your computer when you get done and it downloads all the information from your run. More information than you'd ever need to know (wind speed, temperature, change in elevation, all sorts of stuff).

If any of you are wanting something like that you can look around...we ordered our's off Wal-mart's website for like $160. It helps you keep track of your runs and log all the information if you're running outside and not on a treadmill.

Another idea - I have a little pouch that I can velcro onto my shoelaces and it's just big enough for a key and it doesn't bother me or bounce around as I run. My DBF gave it to me and he got it at a running store. I can take a picture when I get home and have my camera cord to upload to my computer if you're interested.

I have been carrying my keys with me...or I hid them under a rock that I can see the whole time...I am not really hiding them, as people can see...but I can see them and go after someone that wants to take them! Grrr...

But they have been breaking the windows to get into the cars. :scared1: You can't see the cars from the walking trail. It is not a great area of town, really. Lots of nice house surrounding a shopping/walking area that seems to attract some people bent on stealing from others, unfortunately. :sad2:

I actually had my whole car towed away (stolen by towing) from my gated condo complex in 2005. :sad2: Got my car replaced just in time to be smashed by a tree during Katrina. But, now I have a better car! :) And I don't want anyone to hurt it!!

That Garmin sounds COOL!! :thumbsup2 I actually like to know elevation. I know, I am such a nerd! :teacher:

I've been reading this for about a week (and read the entire 2007 thread!) and I'm ready to jump in. I think I'm going to do Tues/Thurs/Sat. because I have class from 11am-8pm M/W/F..ick! I did this program during the summer of 2006 while I was on a swim team. Too much exercise got me really sick so I gave up after week 4. I quit swimming to focus on academics so now I'm looking for something new. I haaaaate running, but I want to learn to do it the right way and hopefully not dread it so much. I move states a lot so it would be nice to have an exercise I can do without a gym membership or buying an equiptment.

So all of my running will down outdoors. I'm currently in Michigan and it's snowing right now:scared1: but hopefully it will warm up later this week!Yesterday I finished W1D3. I'm using the podcasts and doing it for time, not distance. For week one I did 2.5 miles total each day... definitely a stretch for me!:lmao:

I'm just hoping to finish it this time! I'm moving to IL on April 28 and moving to FL on May 16, so it will be hard to keep with it as I'll be so busy! But hopefully having the accountability on here will keep me on track:thumbsup2

Sunday, Sunday..

Week 6 Day 1 complete! I'm feeling better now and my energy is coming back. YAY. Today I did the runs at 4.6, 4.8, 5 and then one extra 5 minute run at 4.8 again. Went 3.1 miles which I hadn't done since a week ago. I can't believe I'm already in week 6. Suddenly the time has flown!

cwnhokie~Congrats on week 1!! Keep it up! :thumbsup2

Vicki~ "This message board is a great way to remain accountable!!!" I totally agree!!
Congrats on your first 20 min run!!! Woohoo, week 6 (can you believe it?!)

maroo~heehee. glad you liked it. :teeth:

DisneyDayTripper~I'm going to look at the Garmin products, thanks.

Hi there, welcome!! :) Congratulations on beginning the program, and completing week 1! You're off to a great start, keep it up, you can do it!!! :thumbsup2
I feel for you up there in Michigan with snow in springtime.. I was born and raised up there and had enough of winter to last a lifetime! That's cool you're heading to Florida in May though! woohoo!
Keep us posted on your progress. :)

For week one I did 2.5 miles total each day... definitely a stretch for me!:lmao:

If you're doing 2.5 miles in the week 1...you must be far more advanced than the C25k program. In week 1 you Run for 60 seconds and walk for 90 seconds for a total of 20 minutes. If you did 2.5 miles in 20 minutes that would mean you'd average an 8 minute per mile pace....even when walking. Is your treadmill set on kilometers or something instead of miles?

Happy Tuesday! Last day of March!

I did W6D2 today. I extended the jogs and shortened the walk a bit. Jogs were 15 min at 4.8 mph and walk was 2 min at 4 mph. I feel great!

And that was the last of the walking/jogging intervals for me!!! woohoo!

I hope you all are doing well! We need UPDATES from everyone!!!!! :)

Wow!! That is awesome! On Week 6!! That is fabulous!

I can't believe you "walk" at 4 mph...I consider that walking FAST!!! I have to walk slower to recover!

I did well on Saturday...did 3 miles in under a 16 min mile pace...which is my goal for the half (the pace).

Yesterday, I did not do as well. My muscles were really hurting! I am never sure when to just push through it and when to stop. :confused3 I don't mind the pain so much, I just want to avoid an actual injury at all cost!
