2008-2009 Cheer Parent Thread!!!!

Yes, both you ladies are right....I was talking about AE. I understand the distance issue as I live in Hudson, and drive one daughter to AE and another to gymnastics in Cuyahoga Falls multiple times per week. I feel like I am in the car driving all the time, but they both love their sports, and their gyms, so we keep going.

I don't really have any other suggestions as far as gyms. I know of other gyms in the area, but have no personal experience with them, other than seeing their teams at competitions this past year. If you feel strongly enough that your daughter really needs to be moved up one level, it might be worth calling AE after their Solon try-outs next week to see what levels of teams they are going to have there. If there turns out to be a level 3 team, you could at least visit a couple of times to get a feel for the environment.

Hope all goes well with whatever decision you make!

Sorry about the no PM Kristi, I'll just keep hijacking this thread I guess:rolleyes1

I totally understand the distance issue. I drove 40-60 miles each way depending on what other activities were going on, so I really do understand. If your daughter is happy where she is and you are satisfied with her progression by all means keep her involved there.
Do they offer any sort of private tumbling and stunting classes your daughter could take to keep her progressing toward the higher levels? If not, many gyms do offer these classes, and it's usually not required to be on a team to enroll. It really helps the girls gain the skills faster.

Since distance is a factor, I agree about stopping in to the Solon location since it's going to be the closest gym to you. They are doing tryouts next week, but you could contact them to discuss classes they'll be offering at that location. There's also alot of families that carpool from that area, and between the N Rigeville & Tallmadge locations. FWIW it's not really a new "startup", more an extension of the existing facilities with a name change and adding AE coaches. They did the same thing in N Ridgeville last season and it worked very well.

Hope I've helped you. Any other questions, post away and I'll do my best.
Good luck!

Ahhh...I feel for you (and your CP) but I agree. If my CP weren't throwing her tumbling there'd be no team for her next year...it's too much money. I'd let her take a tumbling class and work on getting it back though. It actually might take the pressure off her to just tumble and have no expectations!

Today is the last day of tryouts and I told her today that if she didn't do it tonight by herself, then no cheer next year.

The thing is she IS doing it by herself, but she has to have someone stand there with their hand out. I think part of it is that she enjoys the attention that she is getting from the coaches and other kids when she won't do it! :headache:

Does your gym have a rec type team that she can participate on?

Our gym has 3 precast (pre competitive all star teams), all level 1, so no BHS. The monthly fees are much cheaper, they have slightly different (ie: cheaper) uniforms, they only practice 2x per week (practice and tumbling) and they don't travel with us so big bucks saved on airfare, although they do a few local competitions with the rest of the gym closer to the end of the season.

If you have something like this, it might be a good in between thing to let her continue to enjoy cheer, but also to work on her confidence in getting her tumbling back.

They do have a team like that this will be the first year that they offer it. I haven't even thought about letting her be on that team.

The new coach that was doing the tumbling class yesterday said that she should be working on her layout by now with as long as she has been doing her BHS. She says that she wants to continue to do cheer but she sure doesn't act like it...

you're right, i probably should run, but... It seems like so much fun. We have tried ballet but she doesn't like that at all. She has done gymnastics and really enjoyed it. She's been tumbling with a coach for a few months and loves it so we're going to give cheer a try. I have friends who have done it with their girls so i've heard about the costs, time, etc.

We're in palm beach county florida. She is going to attend cheer clinic at palm beach lightning for the next couple of weeks and then do try outs. We were also looking at the royal gemz but found out yesterday that gym is closing so lightning it is. I checked the brandon all stars site but they're in tampa. Top gun is down in miami and that is too far.

My friend's daughter is older and cheers for lightning. I really like the feel of the gym. There are no gym fees for first year tiny/minis so we'll get a bit of a break to try it. We'll pay uniform, competition (though they don't go to all) and then travel cost. So it will be a way to try it and see how it goes before it gets outrageous.

Thanks for the information! I'm up for any and all tips for a new cheer mom!:cheer2:

have you looked into the wellington all stars?? They are slightly cheaper than palm beach lightning.

MuttNGeff - I tried to send you a PM. Did you get it??

Does anyone know if flying classes would be offered over at AE Solon? Right now we really need to get this scorpion to be a bit stronger.

My dd got her r/o back tuck on her own on the air track :cheer2: But now I wonder how long it will be before she has it on the spring floor. She's going to need it by summer's end in order to bump up to level 3 where we currently are at.

Is there any way to post videos here on DIS? Probably not?? I'd love to see your cheer teams in action!!!

Listening to all of you talking about your DD's trying out for the 2009=2010 season makes me sad!!!:(

Steph is still holding out hope that she will get called from the HPU waitlist. The coach said she was near the top (but what does that actually mean??). We sent in the deposit and she does want to go there............

Fill me in on how your DD's are doing and what teams they have made.....

I miss it already...

Hi,
Hang in there rosemary and keep up the hope! Jenna's cast is off! whoo hoo! she was very sore walking in the boot the first few days and I was sick to my stomach over it. But now it's been one week and she is moving around very well and claims she is 99% "pain free" just when she points or flexes her toes she feels the pain a bit. She starts 6 weeks of PT tonight at a sports facility in the next town that actually houses our local minor league baseball team the Somerset Patriots. They totally get the concept of all star cheer and know what she needs to become "whole" again. I am very hopefull that she will come through this OK. I am still not allowing her to jump or tumble until mid July when we get back from our Disney vacation.. I am NOT going to risk having her in a wheelchair again this trip! lol.. She made a Large Sr 4 team again this year and may have a chance to cross over to the Sr 5 if her skills come back. I'm not worried about her level so much as just having her healthy enough to enjoy the sport. Her Sr 4 team is going to be amazing so that helps a lot as well! :)

Hi,

I have a question I wanted to ask you since you are a fellow cheer mom and seem to know a lot about this issue. My daughter cheers for East Elite and last week while doing her full she sprained her ankle. The emergency room said it is a light sprain and she got a air cast and she isalready walking without the cast and light pain when she jumps. Overall she is doing well. Since it still hurts when she does something like a cartwheel or etc. I wanted to get her a brace and seen that you got a ASO Lace Up Brace from Collins Sport. They have a retail store in Brockton which is so expensive but they also take prescription if you can get the doctor to give it to you. For tumbling and jumps which exact one did you get and was it the one with the inserts on the side or without? Any info will be helpful since her practice starts back up on June 1. I appreciate this. :cheer2:

Hey Rosemary!

I was just thinking the other day that we never got the chance to meet this season and now you're done :sad2:

We finished out our season at All Levels in Atlantic City....you can watch CP's Youth 2 team here....http://www.varsity.com/event/1217/international_all_levels_championship_videos.aspx type Sparks Youth 2 Stardust in the search bar...Not their best performance :sad1: They had a fall in their 2nd stunt sequence...a stunt they didn't drop all season!!! It was too bad because they would have had a really good shot I think!

Our tryouts are done and CP made Youth 3/4....their really pushing for Youth 4 but it's a stretch so we'll see...with that said CP got her standing tuck on Tuesday night! She's obviously thrilled but her coaches were giddy with excitement running around the gym singing youth 4....youth 4 LOL! A few more standing tucks and layouts and they'll be there!

Hey Dana! Is your DD going to be cheering for Comets again? I also noticed your trip counters! Two trips to dream about . . . you are so lucky! Is the MOM's Trip in October with your friends?

Hi Laura! :goodvibes Yes we are still with Comets and loving it!:cheer2::cheer2: Can't wait for my trips! I'm taking the kids back in the summer and then going back with my friend Cheryl for the "moms" trip! Cheryl's daughter cheered at World Cup this past year on Odyssey but she tore her ACL so she is taking the year off to heal. Funny, cheer mom story.. we were down in Baltimore a few weeks back at Return to Atlantis and Jenna was still in the hard cast. Well, because we go to such a great gym we are able to room with whomever we like. So I room with Cheryl. We had been together for so many years at CAAS that it is just natural that we be together still. We both left the same year but we both chose what was best for our girls.. not just mindlessly following each other to gyms! lol.. Well, I rented a wheelchair for Jenna at Baltimore.. so I drop Cheryl, Chels and Jenna off with the wheelchair and go park the car and meet them inside.. They were already seated in the arena and cracking up! Apparently they got a lot of stares and strange looks going into the arena! We NEVER gave it a though that this WC mom in head to toe black and gold was pushing the wheelchair with the Comet cheerleader in it! Just too funny and cute.... Then the girls went down to the harbor and decided to take photos together.. the actually switched skirts.. Jenna had the WC skirt with the Comet top and Chels, the opposite.. if I can load them on the computer I'll post it.. just too cute and what it's really all about! :goodvibes

IALC final results are in for Levels 1, 2 and 3.

The complete rankings are in? Last time I checked they only had the grand champs listed. I'd love to know how we did overall.

The winners for levels 1, 2, and 3 are in. 4 and 5 will be announced on the 22nd. What is weird though is that they only listed the online Grand Champions, but didn't list how the other winning teams from each location did. I would have liked to see how each team ranked as we had 7 teams competing in the video judging. Here is a list of the winners after the video judging:

Oh...I know the winners are listed I was wondering if the rest of the rankings (2nd, 3rd, 4th) were listed. We knew CP's youth 2 didn't have a shot at winning b/c of the fall but were curious to see where they ended up overall.

I wish they would list the rest of the rankings.

From my experience with ankle issue, if the sprain is a light one, I would do the basic........rest and ice and slowly getting her skills back. I do know she and the coaches will want her full force, but it is way early in the season and kids will be shifted from team to team all summer. My daughter had a 3rd degree sprain with ligament and cartilage damage over 1.5 years ago. She then had another sprain(2nd degree) right before we went to Dallas!! The bad sprain still gives her problems thus the ASO brace. I also got her a second ASO for the newer injury. She says it is not needed as much on that one but did wear it for Worlds since she only began jumping right before Worlds and actually did not even do running tumbling in Worlds because it was still weak!!

Please let her heal before she goes back too soon. I am familiar with EE and I think if you talk to the coaches and explain the injury then they will lighten up on her. I also know there is pressure on those kids to continue to perform the same skills they tried out with or the threat to move them down is there. Be open with the coaches and let them know what the doctor's say. It is not worth forcing her back too sooon to further injure her ankle.

Good lucka and hope your CP has a great season and heals quickly!!

The ASO was priced similiar to most braces. The ASO was recommended by her sports orthopedic

Yes, Brenda......I am done!! Sad!!! Steph is still holding out hope that the HPU waitlist will come through for her. I spoke through email with an owner of the cheer gym in Hawaii about her cheering there. It sounds like a great newer program but I just will not be able to handle the tuition and allstar cheer!! I really think Steph needs to think about what she wants to do. She so wants to go to HPU (declined some other colleges that she could have cheered at for HPU). She LOVES the school. I am just afraid she will be lost without cheering. Then the thought of paying full tuition and she makes the team the following year or even in the spring if there is an opening and then not ever being eligible for the scholarship. Part of me if wanting her to just decline going there!!! But it is her life (and my money!!)......I rather her go to a local school and super senior at Celebrity again or an open team. She was asked by a friend to go to EE Open Coed tryouts but and declined. She says she will be shot if she walked in there....LOL!

I watched the video..........they were great even with the fall. Jumps a little off but fantastic for a youth 2 team.

Dana........glad to hear Jenna is doing better. I spoke through email with Katie again. She gave me a link to the HPU team. Some of those names, I saw videos of and honestly think both Katie and Steph had equal or better skills. Especially one still picture I saw of a flyer whose scorpion was not very good (sorry if that sounds mean but just being honest). But, it is what it is.............Steph will have to make a decision soon (July 1 is the coaches deadline for everyone to accept his offer). I would love to know if everyone has already accepted his offer to cheer at HPU. I wish he would just tell her that the team is all set or that there is hope!! UGH!! She really wants to go there but I think she will be very sad without cheering (although right now she is too consumed with prom/graduation and her grad present we gave her and her friends........our DVC at OKW for 5 days!! )..........

Well cheer mom's.....keep the updates coming!!!! I will live vicariously through all of you!!
