Excuse me while I brag a moment!

Walker has strugged with reading and phonics for as long as I can remember. We've been working with a tutor to try and get him up to speed but not with much luck. Walker will work math problems until there is no end, but usually all I have to do is mention the word reading to him, and he gets antsy and finds 1000 excuses to to why we should do something else.

We've read to our kids since they were babies and both of them would sit all night long listening to us read to them. But, with Walker, it's been like pulling teeth to get him to read.

So, tonight he brings home a form for required reading for the month of October. He needs to read 10 books minimum, 20 books for extra credit. So, here I am, thinking, we'll struggle through 1 book and call it a night.

:cheer2: Three books later, Walker is torn between continuing to read or going with Cameron to Boy Scouts so he can sit with Gary in the hallway and read his Tiger Cub book. I can't believe my eyes or my ears....Walker read all three with very little help from me. These were new books that he hasn't tried to read before and more importantly, books we haven't read to him. I don't know what his teachers have done with him at school, but this turn around today is amazing!

Parent/Teacher conferences are Thursday night ---- you can bet this will be a positive discussion between me & his teachers. I just might shoot them an email right now while it's fresh in my mind and they can hear my excitement!

In the end, Walker chose to go with Cameron & Gary, so now the house is quiet. Time for me to spruce up the place before the hustle and bustle of nighttime routine & morning comes.

Brag Away!

That's a Great Accomplishment! Sometimes it just takes the right person to make it click for them!

DD who hated science last year and barely passed the last 3 years, is getting A's this year! :confused3

Way to Go!

Ok folks the gloves are off. Karen saw that I was taking pity on you all and she told me no more kidding around. So she picked out this image.

(2) NO HINTS – Karen may relent and force me to give a clue later.

(3) The first DisSer to post the correct answer wins.

Good morning Member Cruisers
- we sail in 19 days!

18 days until the pre-cruise DIS meet in the Solarium at Beach Club!

party:

Woo Hoo - we are in the teens!

Remember you can get a copy of the navigator on the web site!

Hey good news.
I went onto the Soutwest website this morning and was able to change to an earlier flight in on the 21st!!! So instead of getting in at 2:15pm we will be getting in at 12:45! Yea!!!!
No problem with making it to the Pre-Cruise meet now!!!

Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah Tip Of The Day

Get ready to smile and say Disney! One of the best souvenirs you'll come home with will be pictures. It starts right before you enter the ship as you pose before a dated backdrop (they had a special sign for the last Member Cruise wonder if they will at this one too). In addition they have backdrops out every night to have pictures taken in front of. So come down early before dinner, find the one you like best and get in line for a family picture.

Here's a tip - did you know you can have Christmas Cards made on the ship using one of your pictures? What a great way to show family and friends the fun you had on the Member Cruise!

Good morning everyone! Nasty storms rolled through last night. Hope everyone in the area is ok. It was really bad up here and they are saying it was worse on the south side. We had golf ball size hail! Yikes! Everyone East of us stay safe as well because it is headed your way!

Just wanted to drop a hello from Southern California. Marc and I are REALLY looking forward to this cruise. We've popped in to visit this thread ever since the phone-call derby began last year. It was from the thread that we noted we could call the 407 number instead of the toll-free number, and "poof" we were in!

It's been fun doing the drop-in-read-and-dash-back-out viewing, but I thought it was time to at least say hello to y'all! Looking forward to a flight on the 21st, a night at the Hyatt, and then 4 WONDERful days at sea.

Wishing all well!

Michael (and Marc!)

:welcome: Michael & Marc :welcome:

I wonder what the prize is when he reads the 10 books? My DS has a Book-It program that if he reads the required number of books, he gets a coupon for a free personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut.

It's the book-it-program so he will also have a personal pizza when it's over.

At the end of the year, they do a reading program where the kids earn a ticket to Six Flags Great America. I wish it was Disney ;) .

Thanks for all the good wishes & congrats for Walker ---- he came home last night and moaned and groaned that he couldn't read a couple more books. :teeth:

My DS Ben (yes he is 7) LOVES the Magic Tree House Series too. We went to Borders last weekend and bought him another one, he had to line up all the ones we have so he can figure out what he is missing. He has also been bringing home a MTH book from the school library every week. My impression is that they won't have time to read on the cruise - do they have books in the Oceaneer lab and club?

Chris

We have all of the Magic Tree House books as they were once Cameron's favorites as well.

Books in the lab or club? I don't know. I do know they have playstation or computer games that mezmerized Cameron & Nick. The boys were glued to those screens. :)

Stacy, have you given any thoughts to Nick's boundaries this cruise?

For others who have kids in the 10-12 age group, have you decided to give them checkout priviledges in the lab? Last year, Cameron had the capability of checking himself out but had to go to the cabin if he did. The lab would beep us with a message saying that Cameron had left the lab and headed to the room. One or the other of us would then meet Cameron back in the cabin and decide from there what the next move was going to be.

Ok folks - I'm digging deep into my video library. Next one WILL take awhile. Stay tuned.

Way to go, Mary! :thumbsup2

I would have guessed Finding Nemo too!

It's so cool to know there are so many scouts onboard. My 10 year old David is also in scouts and looks like he'll be hanging out with some good company! party: :cool1:

Good company -- that's what it's looking like in our area. The boys who have been a little bit of trouble up until now, just don't go into scouts or join and soon drop out. I think Scouts forces some discipline that not all boys want to deal with so it's not made for everyone.

I'm glad to hear David's joining the other boys!

Excellent for her!! :cheer2: :cheer2::cheer2: Isn't it amazing how they can make such a tremendous turn around!!

I did email Walker's teachers last night saying thanks. I know that teachers don't always hear the positives, as a lot of parents only say something when they have a problem. I was a little skeptical going into this school year as it was a new school for Walker and he's in a class where two teachers job-share. One is there Monday, Tuesday, then the other is Wednesday, Thursday Friday. A lot of weeks they rotate at to who is on which schedule. So, I worried that it would be confusing and hard for the kids. Apparently, it's no big deal for Walker.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory?

I can't remember but thought I read it somewhere or maybe it's just my imagination but was tipping included in our cost of the trip? Or do we still tip like we would on a regular cruise trip? :confused3

Sorry if this has been talked about but I don't get a chance to get on this thread too often.

TIA :wave2:
Debi

Debi, I don't see where anyone said definately they are included. I know Mary said she remembered it from booking day but can't find anything in writing. It's been nagging at me to have this solved in my mind too -- as I have a little bit of an uneasy feeling. I do plan on calling member services today to check (I told Mary I planned to call yesterday but I forgot until I saw your message today - thanks for the reminder). I'll post what I find out.

I'd rather know going in that they are or are not included.

That was my guess!! Did you read my mind?

I'll go on the technicality and guess Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. The old nice sweet Gene Wilder version as opposed to the creepy Johnny Depp version. :lmao:

Cindy - I think we will all be interested to hear what they have to say. I really thought we knew it on booking day but I looked all over last night and can't find it. Hopefully you will get a very helpful and knowledgeable cast member.
