We got a print-out from http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dvrd/revb/enterovirus/viral_meningitis.htm I actually have a call into my Dr to see if I need to take any preventative measures...Likr I said, Really Weird.....

:figment:

Hope dh doesn't mind, (and Cindy too) but I'm going to post Mike's PM that he wrote today about viral meningitis. Hopefully it will help to calm some fears. Of course, always check with your own doc if you have questions....

Here is it:

There are two kinds of meningitis--bacterial and viral. Bacterial meningitis is the dangerous one. Viral meningitis is only important because it must be distinguished from the bacterial type. When kids get admitted to the hospital with viral meningitis, it's only because you wanted to rule out bacterial meningitis. Once you know it's viral, they get discharged. Viral meningitis gives you a bad headache and stiff neck, makes you feel achy, might cause vomiting and dehydration, but it is RARELY RARELY dangerous (in 10 years of practice i have never seen ANY complication from viral meningitis).

Kids are constantly exposed to viruses that can cause meningitis. Usually they just result in cold-like symptoms or vomiting and diarrhea. Every now and then, the virus gets into the spinal fluid and causes inflammation (meningitis). Why it does that is not well understood, but it has more to do with the state of the person's immune system who gets meningitis than it does with the virus itself.

This means that if you catch the virus from a person with viral meningitis, you'll most likely end up with a cold. It also means that if you are exposed to a person with a cold, you could get viral meningitis--but it's a rare event.

So... i wouldn't worry about exposure to viral meningitis at all. If your son has a bad headache, vomiting, fever, etc you should let your doctor know (you should do that anyway).

Hope that helps..

Tis' the season....
From the CDC link that was posted:
(bold added by me)

What causes viral meningitis?

Many different viruses can cause meningitis. About 90% of cases of viral meningitis are caused by members of a group of viruses known as enteroviruses, such as coxsackieviruses and echoviruses. These viruses are more common during summer and fall months. Herpesviruses and the mumps virus can also cause viral meningitis

Just a quick note to say that we got an awesome rental car rate from Hertz for the 2 weeks around the cruise today. Southwest has a great code right now with Hertz (see transport board) and our weekly rate was $101 - woo hoo for a total of $300 with taxes etc for 2 full weeks. Yes, I know it's a shuttle ride at the airport but even with the parking fee at the terminal it's only costing us $20 more than if we did a one way before the cruise and another car after - and it's saving us time!

Cindy - Prayers and pixie dust coming your way. I know a little how you feel. Many years ago the doctors thaught I might have menengitis (I don't remember which kind) but just hearing the word menegitis makes you freak for a second. Luckily I didn't have it I was have some very weird complications froma different illness.

Julie - Thanks for the car rental info. I'll have to take a peak and see what I come up with for the dates we are down there.

Karen - Thanks for posting Mike's pm. I look foward to his articles everyweek. Has he ever thought of becoming a writer?

His pediascribe ones or his Mouse Matters ones?

He's thought of it many many many times. He has written about 4 novels....but only 1/2 way. He gets bogged down in the middle. They take too long to write. He is REALLY enjoying writing his articles now b/c they are quicker. :) And he's LOVING doing the podcasting thing for the DIS Unplugged and.....

ta-dah....his OWN podcast which debuts TODAY!!!!!!!!!!!

'course, it doesn't surprise me b/c he was a DJ in middle school, high school and college. :) The kids are ALWAYS asking him to "say that in your DJ voice." :lmao:

BTW I love the intro by KT from London in her best British voice.

Just got home from a nice dinner with Cindy. I wasn't far from her house going to a wake of a old family friend. So we met up for nice Italian dinner and some conversation. Always nice to have dinner with a good friend. Can't believe I posted before her but she did say she was thinking of going to look for some new crocs. :)

And, now I'm finally home with my 2 new pairs. Diana, if you didn't post that you bought the Athens, I wouldn't have even considered them. But, when I tried them on, the little knubby thingy's on the bottom of my feet felt so good, I knew I was buying them. I have them on now and the thingy between my toes doesn't even both me.

Then I looked at all the new colors of beaches and took a peek at the bottom of them. I saw just how much wear my first pair have gone through so I bought another new pair of them.

I really liked the scutes but they didn't have a wide selection of them. I think I'll look online and see what I can find.

Better yet, when I checked out, the cashier asked if I'd like to join their club and save $10. No strings attached! So, I bought both pairs for $50. :cool1:

Dinner was nice. We'll have to see about getting together between now and the cruise. We were briefly talking about our upcoming social calendars and it seems like right now, we both have a lot on our plates for the upcoming weekends. At least I know I'll see you for sure in October! :sail:

Really weird is right. Maybe it's just more common that I've always thought. According to my pediatrician, because it's viral, there isn't any preventative measures.

And there's my other pediatrician chiming in.

I felt so much better reading this from Mike this morning. Talk about calming -- I didn't even rush to the phone to call our pediatrician at 9 when they opened.

Thanks again Karen & Mike!

I need a little more time to get back to you. We didn't have a digital camera at the time and I need to hunt down some pictures.

Wouldn't that be something if we were there at the same time. :)

Cindy: PD for you and your family.

That is cool.

On that note anyone planning on going to Mousefest?

Thanks to all my DIS friends for all of my birthday wishes! It didn't feel much like a birthday today, but that's ok. Just another day, so that means the count doesn't go up, right?:thumbsup2

Chris has his surgery in the morning, so we'll be busy with that tomorrow! Luckily, I don't have to coordinate picking Emily up at school, since she'll go to a friend's house after day camp. I'll pick her up later before her swim lessons.

Well, I'm exhausted now, and putting this birthday to rest!!!
