Just checking in and givng us a bump.

Ken- good luck on the ride, what an awesome thing to do!

One last thing- I am going to order more of the "repo this" shirts from cafepress. Robb won't wear his because he doesn't want it to get ruined. My iron on is breaking up- because I have worn mine so much AND I will be wearing mine on the 11 night cruise atleast once!
Even though I will be on the next big cruise- this thread and this cruise- will always be the original for me.

Celeste: going thru my shirts this week, I found 5 of them that I ordered. Someone should have been looking over me. I didn't need that many. I have to watch it from here on out........

You need to order more than one more - order two or three - they wear nice

Debbie,
You have been in my thoughts ALL last night and today.....
I have been working nights since Monday- meaning I am at work from 7pm to 8am. Last night was really the first night that it was quiet enough that I was able to see pictures of what was happening down south. I had heard the devistation- but did not have the chance to see it until then.

Oh my gosh- four of the nurses and myself sat around streaming video on the internet crying. We all felt so thankful that we were safe- and were concerned for the people in those areas. We also heard about the hospital in New Orleans who was loosing power and evacuating people. Our hearts really went out to those nurses and others providing care in such situations.

So, you have been in my thoughts. I have seen all of the wonderful care that the Red Cross has been providing these people. I am tempted to get in my car and drive down there for labor day weekend to help out- but wouldn't know where to begin.

If someone was interested in helping- would the best thing be to donate to the Red Cross or what. What do you guys really need at times like this? Is there anything that we as dismembers could do to support you or your family, while you are serving others?

I hope you are well and safe...and I look forward to your response. I think many of us, including myself really understand what goes into such efforts and how we can help.

Thanks for the info!

Hi Celeste,

Thanks for the kind words. Yes it is a rough time. We are very busy at my office. We have sent out 4 people so far and maybe a few more in the coming weeks.

I will probably go in about 3 weeks after my boss gets back. Financial donations are the best thing to do. This is going to be the most costly natuaral disaster in history. Thanks to the webmasters of DIS there is a link on the top of the boards to www.redcross.org We use something like 96 cents of each dollar towards services to the families. (Don't quote me on that one!! I don't have my notes here LOL)

We staged many of our workers in Houston and it looks like some will stay there to work at the shelters there. This one will take a long time to recover from.

If anyone has questions, please ask and I will try and answer them

I just wanted to add something I found out about yesterday. When I donate to the Red Cross (just as soon as I can actually get ON the website--its been crazy busy) I can just send a copy of my receipt to Qwest, my employer, and they will match my donation. Its a great way to double your money for a very worthy cause. I'm too far away to be any physical help, but the Red Cross is an expert, so any help there is the best I can do right now!

Just an FYI, guessing other companies offer matching funds also!!

Since we here at Girl Scouts are getting donations, we always remind families in our annual "ask" to "ask" their employer if they match donations. It really increases the "give" when employers do that. And, many employees do not even realize, unless they do ask!

Thanks to all of those that give support services that provide such great work when disasters happen. I really admire those that can do that!

Linda

My company (Thomson) just announced that they are double-matching - something I have never seen them do before. If I donate $100, they will match it with $200! I was in shock when that email came across.

WOW!! Great deal, Tony!!!!

Debbie,

Are you here in Orlando now? I can't believe the pressure you, and the Red Cross must be under, and if there's anything more we can do beyond donating, please let us know. My son Nick, who lives in Tallahassee now, is leaving tomorrow morning with a group of guys from church to help with the rescue effort in Alabama. I made sure he's taking a comprehensive first aid kit as well as his work gloves etc.

Prayers and pixie dust are going out from Orlando, believe me,

Thanks all.

I am still here at home. My boss leaves tomorrow for Baton Rouge and working with the management of 2 or 3 of the 1,000 person shelters. So probably in 3 weeks I will head out.

On a conference call today they are finally set up to serve hot meals.... 500,000 a day. We anticipate opening 900,000 to 1 million cases on families. Tomorrow 3 more volunteers from my office will be leaving and another 3 in the next week or so.

It is an unbelievable thing going on. I have a very good friend that is the second in charge of the Red Cross chapter in Baton Rouge. I think of him often.

Please remember all of those in MS, AL and also South Florida that was also devastated from Katrina. They have over 3,000 cases in Miami.

Thanks all for your donations. I know that it will be put to good use.

Debbie
