Following are a few additional additions for the cruise re: expenses:

QUOTE]

One more tip regarding credeit card use on the cruise. Make sure you call your credit card before you leave and tell them you are going on vacation and will be leaving the country and using the credit card. :earsgirl:

On our first cruise to Alaska we got a nice note in our room one night telling us our credit card would not let them charge anything to it and we needed to call them... Needless to say a very expensive phone call later from a phone booth in Sitka we were able to clear up everything.

Nice that the creit card company cared but what a pain to deal with on vacation

did Anyone Book Their Cruise Through Dvc??

If So, Have They Sent You Any Information??

We have booked via DVC. We've gotten the confirmation slips showing them deducting our points.

Anything from DCL? No
Anything else from DVC? No

I wonder if this stuff is going to DVC (since they are the travel agent) and DVC needs to forward it to us, but is being lazy. To make matters worse, we share points with my parents who live in Colorado. So my DVC mail goes to Colorado before it ever gets to Florida.

I just hope the DCL website has the same information as the snail mail has.

I can't believe it...the shore excursion booklet made it to Canada...the only problem....it's for the Eastern Caribean ports & Castaway Cay. Is this the same booklet everyone else got or was there actually one for the Panama Canal crossing cruises????

Well, I received a nice envelope from AAA a couple of weeks ago. Sadly, mine too was for the Eastern Caribbean ports and Castaway Cay. I called my travel agent to let her know I received the wrong one, but I'm not sure whether it was a matter of AAA putting the wrong brochure in the envelope for me or DCL sending them the wrong brochure to put in an envelope for me. *shrug*

Gee, I"m MAD!!!!!! Is this one of those alternate universe thingies?!?!?

We have been on a 4 day cruise where we were able to make a reservation for Palo for one of those nights. (I have to confess that we were not all that impressed with the food and had to wait a very long time for it to come.) I plan to give Palo another try when we are on the 14 day cruise. I'm wondering how often some of you are planning to dine there. Has anyone heard anything about making Palo reservations for this cruise?

Hmm ... I was pretty tired when I wrote that so maybe I didn't ask my question too clearly. I was under the impression that you could make one Palo reservation per stateroom for Palo per cruise. I believe I read that in the Passporter guide. Was that also true for the 10 day cruise? (I'm not sure that I want to make more than one reservation but was just curious as to whether that was a possibillity.)

The official line for the 10 day that we were told was one Palo reservation and then the waiting list for additional nights. We never got a call from the waiting list. However, I think the thing to do is call Palo every afternoon and/or evening and bug them. I know of a number of people that got more then one night at Palo on the 10 day Xmas cruise.

Ken

Yes, but if you are dining in Palo with another couple (cabin), then both of you can dine twice. Once for your cabin in a table for 4 and once for the other cabin in a table for 4.

Kay, The list is pretty good but it lacks one main item, Duct Tape, never leave home without it.

Well, that's cool too, Beth. I'm not worried about losing, I just want to keep enough sense about me not to go way overboard (pardon the pun). I know one of the first thing I will do is have a case of Evian delivered to the cabin.

Hugs

I'm all for not going overboard! But I don't know -- do you think we can handle having two Captain Flints in the same cabin??

I was surfing some of the other boards today and found the following:

FIRST: IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR SPACE SAVING BAGS, THE FOLLOWING MIGHT BE OF INTEREST:

http://www.spacebag.com/shop_sport.asp?

First disclaimer:
I borrowed this list from another board. It will be promptly returned to that board after the cruise.

Second disclaimer:

This is a compilation of suggested items to pack from various people/sources. I do not claim them as my own. I do not expect anyone to pack ALL of these tips (I won't even pack them all). Take 'em or leave 'em. They aren't gospel.

So, with that said, here's the list of tips/suggestions:

Essential Documents:
Cruise Documents
Passport or Certified Birth Certificate
Credit Cards
Photocopy of passport and credit cards held by spouse / roommate
Air Tickets for return flight
Cash (Small bills, especially)
Travelers Checks (if desired)
Telephone Number of Cruise Agent (toll-free and direct)
Other Important Telephone Numbers
E-mail Addresses (if you're going to use the Internet Cafe)
Telephone Credit Card

Clothing:
Comfortable Walking Shoes
Shoes appropriate for formal wear
Beach footwear (sandals/flip-flops)
Water Shoes (Optional)
More bathing suits than you think you’ll need
Sweater or jacket for the theaters (they can be chilly)
Eyeglasses (if necessary)
Sunglasses
Jewelry/Valuables (as few as possible)
casual clothing
Umbrella
Snorkeling Gear
Small Sewing Kit
Cover-up for travel from pool/beach (remember, ships are air-conditioned)
T-shirts (plan to buy a few of these)
Gym clothes for running/workouts
Hat (could also be purchased)
Underwear (as desired)
Robe (optional)
Light Sewing Kit

If you plan on doing laundry onboard:
Individually packaged detergent tablets
Dryer sheets
Individual Shout stain remover packets or stain sticks
Rolls of quarters for laundry
Mesh Laundry Bag (also great for dirty clothes storage)

Bathroom Items:
Toothbrush
Toothpaste
Hair Brush/Comb
Skin Lotion
Makeup Case/Bag
Shampoo (your brand in small plastic bottle)
Deodorant
Sunscreen lotion
Spray on sunscreen for the scalp (if you have your hair braided or are folically challenged)
Aloe for sunburn (in case you forget to use the sunscreen)
Skin so soft insect repellent
Headache medication
Cold and Allergy medicines (just in case).
Bonine or Dramamine for sea-sickness
Papaya Enzyme. chewable tablets, helps digest food in case you eat something that doesn't agree with you, THIS IS A MUST.
Correctal, gentle laxative, for men or women. Nothing worse than have that bloated feeling while on a cruise.
Medicines and prescriptions (in original containers)
Light first aid supplies
Body Powder (optional)
Feminine Products (optional for some)
Stick-Up Air freshener

Camera Equipment:
Film Cameras (one-time-use or regular)
Panoramic Camera (one-time-use)
Underwater Camera (one-time-use)
Lenses, Lens Hoods, and Filters (if necessary)
Flash Attachments (if necessary)
Indoor film (ASA 400 or higher)
Outdoor film (ASA 100 or lower)
Batteries
Digital Camera
Memory Modules / "Digital Film"
Cables (depends on camera)
Laptop for image storage/display (optional - also can be used for watching DVDs)

Personal Electronics (everything else that plugs in or runs on batteries):
FRS Radios
Nightlight (the rooms can be VERY dark)
Extension cord with extra outlets
Light up travel alarm clock
Little flash lights (good for inside cabins to help kids find the bathroom)
Mobile Phone (although it won't work in most ports)
Hair dryer
Batteries
Portable reading light
Portable CD or MP3 Player
GPS (for the super-techies!)
Portable iron or steamer

Miscellaneous:
Don't forget the duct tape for emergency repairs (also makes a good "mute button" for teenagers)
Business Cards (who knows?)
Pen/Highlighter
Recreational Reading Materials
Guide books for ports of call
Journal for keeping a trip diary
Zip lock bags for wet swimsuits, toiletries, etc.
Soft sided cooler to bring off the ship for excursions and beaches (must be packing in luggage in order to bring aboard)
Beach bag
Cork screw if you bring wine for the romantic evenings on the verandah
Your own beverages and mixers and cups w/lids to mix the drinks.
Individual antibacterial hand wipes
Bottles of H20 and you can refill them with the filtered water on deck.
Fanny packs
Some hard candy or Movie Theater Candy (optional)
Binoculars (optional)

Miscellaneous:
If you end up underpacking (not likely) you can always buy something in one of the ship's shops or at a port of call.
A good packing rule: when in doubt, leave it out.
Opt for washable items whenever possible, dry cleaning on the ship can be expensive.
Shoes take up a lot of room in luggage, try to limit the # of shoes you bring to: one pair of walking shoes, one pair of versatile casual shoes, and one pair of dressy shoes (plan on wearing the bulkiest shoes on/off the ship, to save room in your luggage). You might want to consider a good pair of water shoes as well (these should not be too bulky in your luggage).
Have all of your shoes broken in before the cruise.
cruise lines don't allow irons in your stateroom, so try to pack wrinkle-free clothing.
Tape identification info INSIDE your luggage (in case the luggage tag comes off).

How do I save something like this for future reference without having to search for it? Do I have to cut and paste it to a file on my computer? Sorry for the dumb newbie question...

Beth

I cut and pasted it to word, then printed it out to keep in my cruise document file

Ashley

(quote)Miscellaneous:

Business Cards (who knows?)(/quote)

ScottH: Duct tape was the first item listed under "miscellaneous". Funny thing you said that, because I was going to list it and didn't because it was there. Scotch Tape is not on the list and I always take that also.
I copied the lists and made the font larger (so I can read them!!!) and putting them in the spare bedroom until I start packing.

Thanks for the Palo information. Didn't realize that only one ressie could be made. WOW - the couple of times we have been at Palo's, it was not full AT ALL - maybe people just didn't show up. I do know tht they charge you, if you don't cancel.

Kay, I missed it completely guess I need the larger Font. Hey I am a guy and we don’t read directions, it is an evolutionary thing. :rotfl2: As men we think the list should have started with Duct Tape in big capital letters. :rotfl2:

There was no mention of a razor for shaving. Do we have to start a beard growing contest list. :rotfl:

A very good list. We actually use a permanent marker to put our ID info inside our bags. Calling the Credit Card companies is a very good idea. VISA did the same to us once, American Express never had that problem, AMEX has treated me very well and I rely on the profesional service from that card.

I did cut a copy the list to add to our cruise file. Actually it straitened up our list. Depending on the trip we bring envelopes with Thank You notes for tips. Chewable Pepto B is a good. Vitamins. Power converter, depending on where you are traveling. Serge protector for electronic stuff, maybe a power strip.

We booked through DVC. We received the excursion info after calling.

Has anyone recieved a letter from DCL "strongly" advising you to bring a passport?

As I understand it, DCL has sent these out the the cruisers. We have not received the letter.

Also A DVC reservation.

No letter, but DCL has our Passport numbers as I recall giving them to DCL in the past.

No shore excursion info either.

Actually, that is a very good idea. To see at the end of say even 13 days, who grows the longest beard. But in lieu of that:

ADD TO LIST: Razor for shaving for the men. :rotfl2:

Well, I am off to accomplish a hugh chore today. We're having storm/impact windows put in our house and the cost of them would get us on probably 3 more cruises in the future....... But it has to be done. Maybe it will save us from a storm/hurricane so that we can cruise more in the future. :confused3
