The real issue is still how to get the generator to run the AC. If anyone has generator knowledge PM me. I need to know how big of a generator.
Home generator use has some draw backs. The main issue is cost. First to size the generator, you need to decide what you want to run. It's not cost effective to run everything. For instance in your case Jim, you want to run the AC. I'm assuming it's a pretty standard unit at about 40amps running at 220volts. Multiple those and you get 8800watts. You would need a generator about 10k watts to get the job done. You might want to bump the output up to about 20k which would run the AC, fridge (gotta keep the ice for the margaritas going). But you get the picture.

Then you need to decide what fuel source you want the generator to run on, Diesel, propane or NG. Those are the most effective types. Gas units aren't as durable.
Then you need to connect in into the house grid without connecting to the public power grid. Either a manual or auto switch gear has to be used. If a auto transfer switch is used, then it's recommended that you have an auto start for the generator as well.

Sounds like fun huh?

Check out Northern Tool for some other information.

You guys are eating better than most of the country over there.

Just checking in - still w/out power. Out since 11 am sat and it's now 10:30 pm sunday. Palm Beach County got hit really hard. We had a really scary night - our street was flooded this morning and lots of trees down. Thank goodness we got a new roof and garage door this past spring. Our neighbors lost almost every shingle. We've been cooking up a storm (no pun intended) on the gas grill. Don't want anything to go to waste - prob gained 5 pounds. Using the generator for a few hours to cool of refrigerators. They expect power to be out for a few days. Not looking forward to the 90 degree weather tomorrow. With Ivan on the way, they suggest we leave the shutters on, here in So FL. The rains started yesterday and haven't let up since. Arghhhh - getting really sick of this!!~!!!! I will be so ready to cruise!!!!!!!!

Hey, is that a slam? Just because I bought your dinner at Sonic?

Cindy, glad to hear you survived without too much damage. I know the worst is yet to come, hope you have power back soon. Are they projecting that Ivan will hit FL too? Say it ain't so!

I haven't seen any reports yet on the condition of Castaway Cay, Vero Beach, or the Parks. There are reports from some of the resorts, they seem to be fine and still have power.

But we've lost Leslie, she was going to stay with us through the storm. Must have lost power too.

Hi....it's Stacey.....

I logged on with MSN, wrote a big long message...and lost the page in the nether world.

Here's the important parts:

Cindy.....glad you guys are at least semi-okay. Sorry about the weight gain! Join the crowd. Start a mantra...."Cruising, cruising, cruising....." maybe that'll get you through.

Welcome, welcome to aragorn!! Do not be frightened away by this crazy group. We just like to have fun. And we're glad to answer questions. Your early arrival at the port sounds like a sterling plan!

Thread name: Official Check-In Thread for 10 Days of Holiday Magic.......
just a thought....Mary, Virgil and Paul's were all about the same as that too.

Well, guys....I'm going to bed. I hope this goes through under my own name.

WONDERFUL HOLIDAY MONDAY MORNING TO ALL OF THE HOLIDAY CRUISERS!
That is, for those of us with the day off!!

Good night!

Stacey

Not me! I have to work overtime tomorrow. Our station does the Jerry Lewis Telethon. At least there will be free food!::yes::

Paul

We are back with power. This one was not bad, only 24 hours. Since it was so short without power and AC the talk of a generator will probably pass. I think the window film discussion will probably have merit. I'm pushing for some new dive lights instead.

Diane - It's nice to see you mentioning New Smyrna Beach. As the Past President of the Southeast Volusia Chamber of Commerce (which is New Smyrna Beach) we always like the attention. It is a great place to vacation. You probably heard of NSB before, but may not remember why. It was on the national news 3years ago as s the shark bite capital of the world. They are only little sharks! Seems fiting that my business was there.

Kids are out of school on Tuesday and we are all watching Ivan.

Wow this is unusual - Stacey going to bed before me. :D

Enjoying a late night cruise on the DIS since I don't have to work tomorrow :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2:

Been a crazy couple of days watching the storms and following the Magic to new ports. I feel so for everyone in the path of these storms. I also really feel for those who have had their vacations changed around. I'm amazed by some of what I'm reading however and think I just better stay on this thread before I get myself in trouble. :D

Cindy & Scuba - thanks for checking in. Hope we hear from Leslie soon.

Night everyone!

Paul - sorry to hear you have to put in extra hours tomorrow.

That's good to know!:earseek: :earseek:

Glad you got power back and hopefully you won't have too much cleanup to do!

:flower1: Good Morning Cruisers! :flower1:

Happy Labor Day!

I think our friends in Florida will have the most labor today as they start clean-up. Hopefully it is just branches and other easy to clean things and not major damage that needs to be fixed.

Off to read the boards. Have a great day everyone!

Jim, what about the pronunciation? Is it the same as "smock", or is it a separate syllable. Sorry to be anal, but that reporter was bugging me. Good luck with selling the new dive light concept vs. storm preparedness stuff. I don't think it helps that there might be another hurricane this season.

Not sharks again. DH gets e-mails about diving accidents, and I peek at them when I can stand it. Someone had posted some pics taken from a high rise off of one of the FL East coast beaches. Sorry, can't remember which one. There were some swimmers, and just a tiny bit further out it looked like a black wave. They were sharks! Very bizarre picture, I had no idea they swarmed like that.

So Paul, are you an on-air guy or a behind the scenes guy? Either way, interesting job!

Mary, I saw some of the posts you're talking about. Whoa! People don't like having their plans changed, do they? Yeah, "get a grip" probably isn't a good response right now.

I have to admit that if our cruise were to get interrupted, shortened etc., I would be mightily disappointed. But I think I'd try to keep it to myself. Well, maybe I'd moan with you guys a little bit.

Morning Holiday Cruisers!!

I like the "Official check-in thread for 10 Days of Holiday Magic" suggested by Stacey - yes she had a good idea, ....

Welcome aragorn59 - As you may have already read we are a bit on the edge (of what we haven't yet decided)

Glad to hear from all of our Florida cruisers - glad to hear you managed to stay safe. I was ready to fly in for the steak and Lobster tails but the airports were closed.

several pages ago Stacey asked about our favorite Disney characters -
Mickey - of course because - it did all start with the mouse &
Minnie - because Mickey Loves her!!!

Vicki

Plus I think Jim forgot to invite us. Maybe he figured we'd rather visit another time.

Wondering aloud last night if Castaway Cay will be restored in time for our visit. DH's one track mind immediately thought of the possibility of visiting another island instead - more scuba diving! Then we checked Ivan's chart, it's passing right over St. Lucia. This is a tough season for the islands too.

I don't mind people venting. I would think we would all do the same. I have a real problem with people bashing DCL because they didn't make decisions fast enough. Or people griping because they can't go to CC. All this while people have lost their homes etc. in Florida.l I think the one thing some of them are forgetting is that the people on the phones they are yelling at are worried about their own homes and families. Thankfully for every idiot there are many more people who "get it".

I agree with Vicki - I like "Official check-in thread for 10 Days of Holiday Magic". Hopefully Karen will be checking in soon and can change the title of the thread. I've already changed my count-down timer last night as I had "first ever 10 day" in it.
