Maggie is....well...alright, I guess. She has gotten into a real biting stage. Almost scary at times because she charges at you, bites, sometimes growls, and then pulls away before you can grab her and tell her no. I've tried most of the suggested ways to stop biting....spray water in her face, shake a can of pennies, grab her muzzle and say no, grab her muzzle and don't let go until she looks away, leave the room, etc etc. Usually it happens when she's really keyed up and playing there!

I got real good at grabbing puppy tongues every time they tried to bite. Anything else tended to make them head shy. Grab the tongue with a couple of fingers and hold on to it. Let it go when her eyes cross.

I'm also dancing because I have today off of work!

So all in all a good start to the day.

I'm going to go read the boards ,but then I'll be back! At least for a little while. I do have house cleaning and other things to do.

Just checking in on the 98 days and counting until our cruise. I haven't been checking in on this thread, but you guys been busy! BTW, My sister is going tomorrow on the Magic and it looks like its going to be another mystery cruise courtesy of Ivan - as its first port of call was going to be Key West and maybe she'll be able to go to Castaway Cay- I'll get all the details on her trip and report back.

Also, please tell me about these t-shirts and how again to log on to all your sites!

Please, if you're playing tug-of-war or keep away with Maggie....stop. It just encourages the biting....especially the tug-of-war...

Toss her toys away from her, instead.

Cash came fully equipped with a very nasty habit of biting and I had to watch my fingers when I gave him a treat...

He also guarded his food dish an would growl and snarl at me if I stayed close to it after I fed him.

We solved the first problem by doing the following:
I gave him his treats enclosed in my fist instead of held in my chewed-up fingers. Gradually I pulled the treat out of my fist a little more each time until he learned that it was the treat, not the fist that he wanted...I proclaimed him cured when he could take a doggie treat sticking out from between my lips without my losing my nose in the process...It was actually surprising to see how reluctant he was to get close to my face at all! so I figured I was pretty safe...Children, DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME!
As for his nipping at my hands in play, I taught him to take things from my hand without my holding onto them. That was how I taught him to help me remove sweaters/sweatshirts... I would hold out the empty sleeve (with my fist pulled way up inside it at first) and tell him to take it and dust it across his nose. When he took it I had him hold it and pull....someone had played lots of tug-of-war with him so he pulled hard right away. When he pulled I would back my arm out of the sleeve and tell him what a good boy he was...I never played tug-of-war with him in any other way except by following this same routine so that he kept the hold and pull motions but forgot the aggression... I only gave him a treat when he dropped the sleeve on my command....Now, about taking off those dratted panty hose...

I also used to grab his tongue and hold it out of his mouth for a couple of seconds when he first showed that he needed some anti-biting work....It takes practice, though...

Some of you may already know me from the east to west Panama Canal cruise thread, but I was too shy to post here - just been a 'lurkin here. Now all of this dancing has inspired me to come out and introduce myself.

My DH, Eric - 36, and I (Kara - 31 until the last day of the cruise!) will be joining everyone on the 10-day cruise in December! We've been booked for so long, I can't even remember when we booked it.

This will be our first cruise together with no other friends or family, so we're very excited and looking forward to some relaxing, possibly some SCUBA diving, and lots of fun!

Lynda, SO sorry to hear about your foot!! If you were still here in the Bay Area, I'd volunteer to come help you out! Bummer and sure hope it's healed in time for this cruise!

Best wishes to all in Florida (AGAIN!!!). Charley displaced my 84 year old grandmother from Port Charlotte to Tampa, then Frances blew through Tampa. Thankfully, the hotel she's living in had no damage. I sure hope Ivan veers off into the Carribean without causing any damage to FL.

I actually have to be healed up in time for an early November cruise when Cash attends his first formal training classes....aboard a 7-day HAL cruise. Their private island has been closed because of all the hurricane (Grrr) damage and I may actually get an extra day at sea....Hey, Cash, more training time.....
